Looks nice until he unexpectedly needs help with moving or repositioning a heavy job, he then has to organise an extra pair of hands to come over for a few minutes just to get it done. I'd be a seriously worried about doing forge work in a place where you could be injured for a considerable length of time without people in neighbouring units being able to hear your screams. :( I'm also wondering how thick that floor slab is there? The building doesn't look like it was built with thumping power hammers in mind, so will the slab take the constant slamming impacts that they produce ?

Will, that pitman should be made from scratch again, especially since the first weld didn't take. The process from the outset (slice, bend and re-weld) will severely stress the shaft, and it it is almost certain you have a cavity inside your weld, no bueno, especially when it starts getting shock loads from doing work

The out of square was probably caused by the weld shrinking as it cooled. Could probably have straightened it by running a couple extra beads on the obtuse side. Though ideally you machine it after welding, so you can make it square regardless of how it shrinks.

This, so much this! Will just did it the hard way. Though since he got it within 0.01" over about 10", I think he learned a bit how cooling welds move a part around.

When Will said he was going to chop the shaft almost through and re-weld it, was anyone else thinking "You're in a fecking forge FFS !!! Drift out the bearing, heat the part right up, then slip a pipe over the damn shaft and tweak it into alignment !!!" ? Anyway, two expressions spring to mind about this power hammer. One is "Time is money", and the second is "throwing good money after bad". The things turning out to be a total dog. It could be repaired, but it will still be a tool that's 50% New and 50% unknown. At what point do you have to accept that this thing's either going to need most of it's components remanufacturing at huge expense, or it's going to be a never ending battle with constant repairs to keep it barely usable. I'm thinking that if this tool wasn't the subject of a KZfaq build series, Will would have put buying this particular hammer down to experience by now and weighed it in as scrap, but it IS the subject of a KZfaq build series, and he feels obligated to carry on............ Cut your losses mate.

Likely he cant due to the bronze bushing.
@berlinetta350

I think its because the shaft is the exact diameter he needs to fit into the clamp part. Any oxidation from the forge and subsequent grinding would make the whole thing scrap.
@Reman1975
@Reman1975 3 жыл бұрын
@@berlinetta350 I'd think running an oxy acetylene cutting torch around the originally welded area to heat it, but moving quickly enough to avoid it cutting too deep would have got enough localised heat into it without the whole shaft getting flaky scale all over it.
@robertwhitney2232

PRO Tip: That coarse sawdust works perfectly to polish your floor tile when grouting! Once the grout is troweled in place and sets up, the tile is covered in a thick haze. Wet the sawdust and with a push broom, sweep it back and forth across the tile diagonally to the joint lines. It magically picks up the excess grout and film. Any haze left behind can be polished of with dry burlap.

It's a real shame that Will and Alec are going to be working in different workshops. I understand their reasons but it's still a shame for us viewers. Their chemistry is awesome and they work so well together. However, Will can't be under the Steeleco banner when he is so talented and ambitious in his own right. It's just a shame I think.

@@TheRoadfarmer we'll never know. My guess it's financial and other things. It's the Alec Steele company. His KZfaq channel was successful before moving to America, so how do you accurately give someone else a fair share without there being any conflict or envy? Will is incredibly talented in his own right.. so does he want to be an employee of someone else forever..? An extra on the Alec Steele show..? It's a difficult one and my guess is that they decided to part ways business wise and remain friends.
