Restoration of the legendary Lockheed Constellation Bataan, behind the scenes.
Experience an exclusive, behind-the-scenes perspective, captured by four strategically placed cameras, documenting every twist and challenge. Pilot Steve Hinton describes it as “The big airplanes aren’t responsive like fighters, but the ‘Bataan’ has hydraulic boosted controls. Even so, it’s pretty heavy, and for such a large aircraft, the cockpit is very small because of its aerodynamic shape,” Hinton said.
"I was really enamored with this airplane, primarily due to its significant historical background and well-maintained state. It's fascinating to consider its evolution, starting from its initial design and manufacturing to its present-day preserved status said pilot/owner, Rod Lewis.

Fun Fact: The LAST plane flown by Orville Wright was a Connie in 1946. They picked him up in Dayton and the pilot invited him into the cockpit and let him take control for a few minutes after they were airborne. The pilot , afterwards turned on the autopilot and Orvile remarked, "I always thought that an airplane should be able to fly it self." Talk about remarkable PROGRESS! Orvile helped INVENT airplanes only 43 years before.

I flew in a passenger version of one of these when I was a kid in 1954. My father was stationed in the UK in the USAF, and we got to fly back to the States in a Connie.

Constellations have been my favorite airliner since I was a little girl in the 1960's. Just beautiful, that this Connie is gorgeous! Thank you for restoring and maintaining this piece of flying history.

This is a fantastic product of allot of time, effort and money being spent to get a flying Constellation. In the early 2000's I watched the Lockheed EC-121T Warning Star Super Constellation sitting at the airport in Camarillo, CA and wondering when it would fly again. It took several more years and a stay in Chino to get it in the air, but it finally did so. These aircraft won't be flying in decades to come unless a conscious effort is made by a team of younger individuals who want fly and maintain them.

I repainted this aircraft while it was in static display at Ft. Rucker in the mid 70s. Thanks for the memories.

Once worked for Mr. Lewis as a Chef - had me out to the ranch once ,.. to "exercise " the War-Bird" collection... it was nothing short of amazing ... My father was a pilot and seeing these planes Especially Glacier Gal was just unreal... He's a hell of a guy and it was a pleasure to Cook for him , in Cabo - Texas and others... I do fly RC and I think I might look into flying one of these RC

Another Connie story. HARS - (Historical Aircraft Restoration Society) based near Woolongong, NSW, Australia restored and still has flying a restored Constellation . This is there story - - - In November 1991, HARS started what was to become a major project when 54-0157 was placed in our care for restoration and delivery to Australia. Relying solely on volunteer labour and aiming at a high standard of restoration and serviceability, the project was to take five years. The restoration work commenced in May 1992 at Pima Air & Space Museum and in September 1994 the Super Constellation took to the air after nearly eighteen years on the ground. Another solid year of work was required to prepare the aircraft for the Pacific crossing and in late 1995 final flight training was undertaken. On 3 February 1996 the Super Constellation VH-EAG arrived in Sydney after an incident free crossing of 39.5 hours flying time. Stops on the delivery flight to Australia were made at Oakland, Honolulu, Pago Pago and Nadi.

I remember when this plane first arrived at Fort Rucker, Alabama to the Army Aviation Museum. Both my parents worked at Rucker and I used to crawl around all over it before they eventually put up plexiglass to prevent cockpit access. This was around 1970? There are videos of it being prepped to fly out of the field it was at to begin it's new journey to where it's at now.

My father flew the EC121 with the PA ANG 193rd sog in Highspire PA. When they trained they flew loops from Highspire to York pa and back for hours. The cool part is they flew over our neighborhood. My friends never believed it was my pop up there. He loved being in the service. He was depressed for awhile when he got out. It was his favorite part of his life.

If you know nothing else about the Connie, you must know these two irrefutable facts. She's the finest three engine airplane ever built. And, like a Harley, if she's not leaking oil, she's not running. Source: me (I have almost flight 2500 hours on the EC-121T/D as a radar operator/weapons intercept tech with the 552nd and the 79th)
