Nice. Had to smile when the lifters were replaced, “These new flat bar ones will be stronger and last longer than the old tube ones”, They have lasted 43 years so far LOL.

Haha that’s true if they haven’t been replaced before. They definitely feel more heavy duty that’s for sure

Doing a great job guys. A conduit or sleeve over the solar panel cables would've been good, but I'm sure you'll be fine. There's split conduit you could put over later if you want. Getting close to the end, awesome
@AsWeWander
@AsWeWander Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah I’m going to put some split conduit on them. Sooo close can’t wait for it to be 100% done

Thanks! Oh that’s good to know, we don’t need it but it’s good to have that vent there anyway. We’ve got a few up now and we’re definitely putting the van to the test 😅 thanks for watching

Use a silicone buddy on the roof next time. You can get them at Bunning's and they will give you an excellent even and smooth finish! Nice video, thanks for sharing. Now I know how the pop top comes apart. Thank you

Is a Silicone buddy the brand name? I can't find that on the Bunnings catalogue.
@dar3726
@dar3726 7 ай бұрын
Sorry that's what we call them and cant recall the proper name. They are small yellow flexible shaped silicon spreaders. We use them to get smooth even silicone on panel joins etc. They are really good.

Painters mate they are called. Little yellow silicon wedges to help finish off the silicon very neat. In the paint section at Bunnings mate.

Thanks for the video, was thinking about buying a van with a damaged ceiling but wasn't sure. Now I've seen this it's full speed ahead but I think I will replace the ceiling panels with composite aluminium panels and beef up the struts a bit. Well done you're a big help
@AsWeWander
@AsWeWander 8 ай бұрын
Thank you! It makes us happy to hear our videos are helpful. The composite panels will work well. Just be careful how much you beef up the struts because there’s no way one person will pull our roof down

I was interested in whether you could fit some form of insulation between the roof and new internal ceiling for more protection for outside temps 😊😊
@AsWeWander
@AsWeWander 4 ай бұрын
We probably could have replaced the foam that was in there with a thicker foam but you wouldn’t get a wool or fibre glass insulation in there because once that’s squashed down it doesn’t work at all.

I found my roof rivets were corroded and were at the stage of popping out/off. Definitely recommended replacement with oversized headed rivets. Don't do all this work and then a few rivets pop causing a leak.
@AsWeWander
@AsWeWander Жыл бұрын
Oh that’s no good do you think they were steel rivets as that would cause corrosion when used with aluminium? ours looked to be in good condition
@aaronskirrey6041
@aaronskirrey6041 Жыл бұрын
@@AsWeWander the rivets were small or standard size / headed aluminum ones. They were not sealed or painted so corroded the head. There is dissimilar metals used with rivets - ie. the rivet head is ally while the expansion / engagement mandrel is steel. i found that the rivet heads were like powder. Some just came off with pushing the drill into them. I drilled out all the rivets, cleaned as much of the sealant as possible from under the roof sheeting edges. I then applied sikaflex under the edge before refixing with oversized rivet heads, just from Bunnings. (same diameter rivet hole). I then added a thin layer of silicon on the rivet heads. following extreme rain event no water was found in the van at all. Highly recommend doing this to an older van; especially when doing all the other restoration work.

Hi Guys just finished watching hope our turn out half as good great job Asking did you replace the stringer on the roof ? what size and materials and how did you attach them at the end off the pop top .. We have completely strip out pop top all we van is the outer frame
@AsWeWander
@AsWeWander 4 ай бұрын
Hey! Thanks for watching, I’m sure it will turn out great just gotta push through the shitty moments and it’ll come up nicely. We didn’t have a stringer in our pop top just the metal bars going across from side to side and this is what we reattach the new ceiling to. Hope this helps

Saw your video on iTechworlds side re the 150w panel instals. I'm adding them to our caravan and wondering if you have had any issues with the panels and brackets either leaking or coming loose? I'm hoping not to have one fly off...

Hey there, we haven’t had any problems and it’s been 10months on the road now. We generally travel at 80-90km/h when towing and have past trucks coming the opposite direction with enough wind to move the whole car and caravan and haven’t had any problems.
