Some people go to school and get into the field only to discover the education retention left them un prepared because we forget what we don't use. I find the premium channel allows me to constantly revisit material and something always gets burned into memory but I've used the premium channel for years. It's my best tool.

It never comes through very well on the video but I describe clogged exhaust as a “muffled” sound. It’s pretty unmistakable. I remember a car with a clogged cat that had the EGR valve right by the throttle cable and when I tweaked the throttle by hand to increase RPM, the exhaust escaping from the EGR valve struck my hand and burned it so bad it caused an immediate blister that swelled almost the size of a tangerine!

Thank you so much! This is a variable situation as you can have a plugged cat on a dual bank system with two cats where it's only affecting one side. Or you can have a single cat affecting both banks. Then MAP vs MAF systems adds another variable. I guess in general, I'm not using fuel trim to help me ID these.

These Tauri/Sable for some reason actually had three catalytic converters, one downstream for each bank, and then a third one downstream of where the exhaust connects. The third cat is always where all the debris will collect, not the muffler. The third cat isn't even monitored, so it's kind of strange that it's even there...

Only primary ones are monitored by the secondary O2 sensors. If secondary O2’s say the primary cats are good than more than likely the 3rd cat is ok as well. Generally..

There's really nothing wrong with that. If the same problem keeps happening over and over, its highly likely that putting out a tsb will fix the issue almost every time. Quite often problems listed on tsb's can be extremely difficult to diagnose. For example, there is an issue with some Infiniti G35's. Its a light tapping metallic noise coming from somewhere in the center of the dash during moderate to heavy acceleration. It turns out that rtv sealant used in the heater core partially breaks off and starts flapping around as the flow of coolant gets stronger with higher rpm's. The fix is to back flush the cooling system, and if that doesn't do it, replace the heater core. How long do you think it took for someone to figure that one out? When I first saw it, I didn't think it was real. I just figured that someone was playing a joke on me. You also have to look at it from the manufacturers point of view. If they know 99% of the time a certain repair will fix the issue, then why would they want to pay the dealer $150-$200 per hour to diag a known problem? Everyone will have a different opinion, but I think its reasonable.
