Results: Hopguard vs. Apivar, and Formic vs Apivar tests.

End of the treatment window results for Hopguard vs. Apivar and Formic vs. Apivar tests. We also look at some results for a control test as well. The control yard was sampled before two rounds of late fall oxalic treatment, next step is to try and confirm if that treatment was effective.

Excellent video Phil, really enjoy watching your videos. I'm really interested in formic acid as a treatment. I've read Dr Currie's paper on a study he did at the U of M in 2006. They talk about slow-release formic acid in a ziplock bag. Is this something you could try in a wintering shed for a test treatment? Again thank you for the information & videos. This shed treatment idea has really got me spinning 😅

I’ve always been interested in trying something in the shed but not sure how to do that on a test scale. I have two sheds full of bees. But I’d like to start with just a few hives.

It's good that you are doing some experimenting. If you would of had a sticky board under the not treated hives you may have gotten a lot of mites on the tray. You are giving 2 grams per hive right of OA? Thanks for the video Phil.

Hop guard doesn't perform well on any of my tests.

Noticed pretty high mite levels in my yellow jacket traps ... something I need look into ... Colony's they were working on in my home yard had pretty low mite levels. Need to figure out exactly what is going on ... Had some colony's I didn't treat in aug cause I wanted some fall honey them seem stronger than the colonys I dropped apivar on in the same yard.

@@philbeeman yes they clearly have mites .. mites are hitching a ride right into my boxes. Not sure exactly from where the mites are coming from maybe neighbors hives collapsing .. had mine reduced down into singles with apivar .. those colonys average 1/2% mite count in the alcohol washes before I dropped apivar really didn't need a treatment but I got paranoid can't afford taking chance plus I figured most mite load was in the sealed brood .. that's why I find it hard to believe mites got on the yellow jackets from my boxes. Possible I guess .. did more mite washes 2 weeks into the apivar treatment didn't find any mites.

@@philbeeman the yellow jacket traps have small holes so honey bees can't get in plus I use watermelon for bait honey bees have no interest in the bait can't get in anyway so I know it wasn't from honey bees getting in. My home yard is close to town I'm at war with yellow jackets have traps all over. Things just keep working the hives most don't get in maybe 1 out of 10 gets in. My out yards in farm country don't really see much for yellow jackets. Not sure exactly why maybe the 🦨 keep them down no idea. Watermelon I seem to have endless supply of sense I started melon pollination Everytime I see the farmer he's loading me down. Wish I could extract the sugar out of them melons some how just thousands of them laying out in the field rotten
