What's up KZfaq Fam
Finally got to work on a small improvement project on the Fix n Flip house. A great way to up your curb appeal is to upgrade your garage door panels with stained wood. We used 1/2in premium grade pine boards (no knots) and glued and nailed them on to the existing aluminum panels horizontally.
We used a pre-stain and then an oil based stain to even out the color and then measured the boards to make sure they would fit flush with where the aluminum panels started and ended. a 1/16th inch gap as created between each board to allow for expansion and contraction of the wood.
hope you enjoy the video!

It’s not the HP rating on the opener you need. It’s the spring rate on the garage door spring that needs to change. If you have an older spring then adding weight is going to shorten the life of your springs so if / when they do go let the garage door guy know you added about a hundred pounds of glue and wood after it was originally installed so he can get you the correct spring rate.

You are right! We own a garage door business and though this may look nice it is a totally wrong way to do it. The adjusted the cheap opener (LiftMaster is the best brand) to lift the door and you don't just turn up the force on it to make it open... WRONG! Eventually that will break the opener, too/ or the springs. The opener is only meant to do what your hands do... with the right balance of springs you should be able to lift that door with 2 fingers. They should call a door specialist and get the door reweighed and get a properly balanced spring for that new size. They mentioned that the door was aluminum but it isnt! It is a light weight STEEL door and I wonder if it will rust with the glue and boards added on it. Well, bottom line is they have the wrong size spring on it and you can tell they were total amatures.

You need to change the spring and motor. I do this work and I work with garage door company before installation. They already install the spring for the weight of the panels plus the wood and little bit extra. You don't want to fell to someone. but looks good.

I’m thinking about doing something similar as an alternative to having to replace my entire garage door. My door has 5 horizontal sections and is wooden but, after a bit of an inspection, it looks to actually be two wood sheets attached to a wooden frame with styrofoam in between. I had the springs an whatnot replaced 4-5 years and everything else seems to be good except for the exterior side wood sheeting (not sure what to call it) on the bottom 2-3 sections. It seems to be water damage from not properly keeping up with the paint and general aging with the bottom section being by far the worst and the damage being less and less as you go up. The current plan is to remove the outer sheet on the exterior side of each section and replace it with plywood then either stain or paint it. All that to ask these questions: 1. Where did you buy your wood? I’m having trouble finding a place that sells them long enough. 2. Did you ever consider doing one solid piece per horizontal section? If so, why did you decide to go with smaller panels instead? 3. Is there a specific reason you chose 1/2”? Do you think 1/4” would have worked in your case? 4. And, lastly, anything major you learned or would do differently if you did it again? Great video! Thanks!

Great Video! I have been considering this for my garage too. Interesting to find out about the springs and that part very helpful. Could you have gone with thinner lumber? if not why not? I'm considering clear cedar and it gets expensive but with that pure Rubio Monocoat wood protector stain should do the trick. New ya need to replace that fence and gate and stain them to match.. Thanks again for the video!

@@adrianavasquez3031 We own a garage door business and would tell you do NOT do this to your door. You add weight on the steel door and it would cause more problems than it is worth. Please tell me you guys updated the springs since weight was added to the door. Balance Test: With the door manually open 1/2 way, it should stay. If it wants to come crashing down, the springs are not doing their job & will wear out your opener. Have a Door Tech weigh the door and update the springs immediately!

I think this looks great and will possibly do the same. good idea, nice to see a video on it. While I agree about the springs needing attention, ignore the naysayers about removing the windows. windows on garage doors look tacky and most people with nicer garages have good lighting already. I'll be covering the windows on mine too. I have like 10,000 lumens of light in there, no need for some tiny ugly windows on the door pumping in 300 lumens worth.

Not so much for me.... 1) I've had solid wood garage doors before. Over time the wood cracks and peels with repeated cycles of sun, rain, and freezing. No matter how well and often you stain, it's just a matter of time. 2) Covering the windows? I love having that natural light through my garage doors....but then my garage is attached and we're constantly in and out of it...we use our garage entrance more than any other door. 3) You never addressed the springs. If it is an overhead torsion spring you could likely wind them a bit tighter, but the best practice is to match the spring rate to the door weight. Interesting work though.

vinyl flooring is plastic material so it might fair better than wood in a really humid environment. if the top layer is some kind of wood, staining every few years will keep it from fading and cracking. other than that, i think vinyl would be fine.

You can always replace the aluminum panels, but the weight difference would be significant. the hinges and tracks for a garage door can be reused with any material to create the long rectangular sections. Aluminum is the most common as its lightweight. anythging else will require, as many have commented, new springs/turns of the coils, and a more powerful motor.

First is that a metal door, second you need springs that will balance the door without the opener, also you lost your windows. If you disconnect the opener can you lift the door by hand, does it park 1/2 way up and all the way up without holding it, if not you need to weigh the door without the springs on it then get springs that lift it with littel effort, also id change the rollers to nylon with sealed berrings, and how thick is the track , id also upgrade the tracks back supports to hold in 3 points not one point. If you know the weight of each board add up the total weight added with some for nails and glue add that to the model door you have total weight Thats the size springs you should have. Last go over every nut and bolt once a year to snug them up and oil the springs and tracks. You have to keep torsion springs lubricated or they can bind and snap. Buy long life springs they cost a bit more. You might have a pro do this as torsion springs can be deadly.
