Old vehicles are a bit like stray puppies. They tend to adopt their owners, rather than the other way around. As evidence, Lori Bentley-Law can point to her 1948 Ford F1 pickup, which she found at a swap meet wearing a sign that read "For Sale or For Parts." After you watch the video, check out more of Lori's story here: www.hagerty.com/articles-vide...

Truck looks pretty perfect to me. 'Imperfections' are more character than anything else

You so perfectly summed up why I drive classics myself. The old car has a soul. It has moods and it has tantrums, but it can also go the extra mile for you if you ask it nicely. If you listen carefully enough, you can hear the car telling you about itself (and of its health) as you drive along and it rewards your attention to any issues it has by putting a smile on your face when you are sitting on an open road with the window down, listening to the engine sing its song. Nothing is better than feeling the car do its best for you and knowing that you helped it when it needed you to. Modern cars just do not have the same character. Give me an old straight six or a flat-head V8 and point me toward the open road.....and you won't see me for dust.....

Absolutely couldn’t agree more. I have a 47 Mercury my dad and I rebuilt in 1985. It’s never spent a night out of the garage and never driven in the rain. My dad passed 10 months ago and I sit behind the wheel and and remember how great of a father he was to me. No place or object brings me closer to him.

Hi Lori! We could be sisters from 2 different Mothers. In memory of my old Dad, semi-retirement and caring for Mom until death, I have been working on an old 49 flat8 as well. My bike is an 03 HD Anniversary night train- Alabama born, field raised with being a good steward to every creature as my motto. She's not currently running but I am determined to start her before June ends. My 4 dogs love to ride. The 12 yr old deserves a few more before he earth's travel ends. Thank you for your story. Heading back out to the barn to rewire the signal switch before my husband the taskmaster puts me back on yard duty.

Hello, from Corpus Christi, TX. Gorgeous little truck! I have a '48 F1 myself. Took it apart and just had the frame blasted and primered....don't know whether I'll have it (the frame) painted or powdercoated. I was thinking of going with the raw steel look on the truck too. Wasn't sure how that would look though...thanks to you and this video, I'm truly inspired now. Anyway...thanks for building this beautiful truck.

Great episode! She expresses exactly how I feel when I drive my 1984 SAAB. Sometimes I hold my breath when I turn or have to listen for that exact engine pitch to maybe slip the into a stripped out 3rd gear... sometimes we just have to rumble along in 4th. I love the way it smells, the way it sounds...

@modobe

Hi Jacob! Actually, I’m in California, not Arizona. The truck has a clear coat over the steel, so no, not hard to maintain. It won’t hold up as long as paint would and is starting to break down in a few areas (clear coat was sprayed in 2009), but overall, we’re getting more years out of the clear coat than expected!

Drum brakes stop just as well if not better than disk brakes. The difference is that drum brakes don’t dissipate heat as well so repeated usage such as in racing will result in brake fade. As long as you’re not racing or driving down a mountain with a heavy load, drum brakes are better than disk because they have more surface area and thus more stopping power.
