Retaining wall with gabion baskets | MORE PHOTOS FOUND! | Cost saving panel with gravel bags fill

I found the missing photos which finish off my Part 1 video of the Steep Driveway series showing how the left section of the gabion retaining wall was built using a cost saving partition for the Scottish cobbles and a gravel bag in fill. The right hand 2m tall section was built with a recycled brick in fill. I would not recommend the gravel bag in fill on a wall over 1m tall as we had movement on the top layer after the soil was backfilled. It's just not heavy enough. As always, thanks for watching! Karen, the base gabions at the garage end - what size have you used and do they have the dirt on the other side piled up against them?

Hi Dave, thanks for watching! Thought I'd reply anyway (as I know you got the info in the detailed video), the 2m high row next to the garage were all 1m3. The left hand section (1.5m high) was a mixture of .5m & 1m deep and I felt they just weren't as substantial as the 1m3 baskets. So if you're going tall, definitely go at least 1m deep. HTH. Karen

what diameter of mesh you use ? 4mm is enought for 15cm - 20cm rocks for 1m x 1m x1m construction?

Hi George, the actual holes in the baskets I bought were about 75mm x 75mm squares. I used 80-120mm sized cobbles to make sure they didn’t fall out. The actual thickness of the basket wire was 3mm and I paid extra for a 4mm face to help reduce any change in shape, ie bulging. 150-200mm rocks should be fine as fill. Karen
