In this video I go what retaking a levels is like. Sharing my experience i.e. some of my A Level retake journey, whilst giving you practical advice and potential benefits.Retaking Year 12 is a tough road to accept... trust me I know and you might feel disheartened, discouraged, or feel like you're so behind compared to other people especially while you see most of your friends become a year older you (Academic wise).
If you are thinking about 2021 a levels, retaking year 12, or repeating a year in sixth form, I believe you'll find this video valuable! I wish I had a video like this back when I repeated a year in sixth form but, it is what it is.
I feel like if you have repeated the year or if you have thoughts on repeating the year, then I can really empathize with you and I'm happy to help give you some emotional support. You might need it more than you think and it's ok to feel vulnerable, left behind, academically stupid... it's completely natural for someone in this position to have these thoughts and emotions.
Trust me tho, this is part of your story arc and your character development. You will peak later in life if not now. Have a positive mindset. Have a plan. Stay strong!

This video helped my make a decision. I failed in chemistry - U, but in my other two subjects I got a A and C . My college said in yr 13 I couldn’t do chem cause of my U and I’d have to do a btec . I was adamant on chem so I applied somewhere else and I’m gonna do this year (y12) again. Hopefully time flies like it did this year to . A quick questions, do unis frown on ppl who redid y 12 , do they even know if you retook y12?? Thanks

I’m SO happy this video has helped you make a decision!☺️ Some universities do frown on it unfortunately, but some see it as a selling point because that takes GUTS and courage. Most universities at the end of the day, WANT you to succeed through their course, and so for somebody to have retook Year 12, that takes serious motivation and self-awareness to make such a decision… most likely that motivation (from failing, that desire to bounce back and that resilience) will carry through university and throughout your career. It certainly has for me, and universities wants to see YOU have that DESIRE to do well, and they wanna have the reassurance that you’re gonna smash it, hence why a lot of universities request high grades from students and have high standards.

Hey man, my case is slightly different. I retook a year of my GCSEs because I didn't get the required grades to even enter sixth form, due to difficult circumstances at the time. I was able to achieve 5s, initially, I was aiming to achieve As, however, due to corona cancelling June exams, I was predicted Cs instead. Now I'm in sixth form and I'm aiming to study biomedical sciences at a good university (preferably top 20). I've been getting As and Bs so far in year 12 topic tests and academically, I'm motivated and doing well. The issue stems from the facts I received mediocre GCSE grades, consequently I couldn't study A level sciences and had to study an extended certificate in applied sciences instead (BTEC), which most top universities don't consider. My best option is heading for a foundation year for biomedical sciences in a good university, they don't require a level sciences but they still want at least a 6 in GCSE maths, which I don't have. Therefore, I've been thinking of taking a gap year after year 13 and retaking my gcses, boosting my grades up so I can apply for better courses with foundation year. The only thing letting me down is my level 3 qualifications choice, not grades. Another option I considered is to resist my gcses during year 13 (November this year) but by the time I get my results back I would've already sent off my Uni applications. So I'm kind of stuck on what to do.
@aldrichcervania8833
@aldrichcervania8833 3 жыл бұрын
Love that you know your options mate! Man… this is a slightly different case indeed but don’t worry, let’s break this down. From what I took in from your situation (please correct me if I’m wrong) is that, you have the end goal of studying biomedical science at one of the top 20 universities in the UK however, in order to apply to those uni’s, you need to apply for a course in biomedical science WITH a foundation year (nothing wrong with that whatsoever mate). You have the relevant BTEC qualifications to apply for that course but, you ain’t got the relevant GCSE grades (you have 5s but you need 6s), therefore you plan to either, A: Take a gap year AFTER year 13 and retake those GCSE exams in that year, or B: Do those gcse exams DURING year 13 but, here you’d already have sent your uni applications. Alright! Here’s what I think😤 I would definitely first call up the Universities administration team. Different university have different rules and different standards of getting in, yeah. Some top uni’s could allow your gcse grades, some top uni’s made increase your grade offer as a compromise, and some uni’s might even say no which is peak. I would list down the Universities you wanna apply for (do your uni research) then call them to ask them about the how strict they are for student applications. Say this script: “Hello! I’m Bob. I’m calling to ask you about your grade requirements for your biomedical science course with a foundation year. I have the relevant BTEC qualifications, however, one of your requirements is that you ask for students to have 6s in their GCSEs however, in my special case, I have a 5s. I wondering how strict are you with this requirement, and is there any chance for me to get into your University with what I have?” Based on their responses, this will determine what rational decision you should be making. You have 2 decisions (as you said), A: take a gap year AFTER Year 13 and do you GCSE exams then, or B: Do your GCSE exams DURING year 13. If the Universities say something along the lines of “your gcses don’t really matter” then option B is ideal. If the Universities say something along the lines of “your gcses really matters” then option A is ideal. I don’t wanna give you false hopes but the reason I say “ideal” is because in reality, you also need to take into consideration of other factors as well if you wanna make the best rational and heart-felt decision for yourself. Factors such as, the grades you actually end up getting, or can you realistically handle that additional workload, or is your personal statement excellent or you personal life situations. Other factors such as how competitive is the course will also impact how much it matters to the uni to let you in. I promise I’m not saying any of this from a negative perspective, I’m not like that. I just want you to make sure you are making the best rational and heart-felt decision that you can make for yourself, and you only you can do that. I know it’s a lot of responsibility, but mate, as you grow, yeah, taking accountability of your own life and what decisions you make are super important. Trust me. It’s a life skill that makes you more a better, attractive and respected person. Got a little deep there in the end hahaha, but… Hope this helps you out☺️

Just googled “intensive a level courses” since I’ve never heard of that before😂... Are these 1 year A-level courses? If that’s the case... firstly if I had known that back in my A-level days, I still wouldn’t have done it because, the amount of self-development you’ll go through in retaking a year is INSANE. There’s no rush to get into uni. You’ll learn SO MUCH about yourself (school don’t teach us about self-development), just as I did when I actually got “deuu” in my exams lol... from an academic and personal view, I believe it’s worth retaking year 12 in your case. Also, when you do get your aaa and when you head to uni, you’ll actually meet people who retook year 12/13/ took a gap year (I overlooked this part), and you’ll bond with them the most and they’ll probably be your closest mates since, you both know the pain and hard work involved in getting high grades when starting from the bottom😊

It’s so odd, I also want to study engineering at Sheffield University and I really admire you and everything you’ve done to get to where you are today. Part of me doesn’t really want to pass this year, I just want to start from scratch but then again would it not be a waste of time? Before retaking year 12 how did you know this was the right decision for you? Were you told that a BTEC would be better? And did you attend the same college or sixth form? I hope you can answer my questions and thank you for your videos and sharing your story, it gives me hope that maybe I too can attain my dreams.

@aldrichcervania8833 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t believe that. EVERYBODY on this planet has dreams and motivations, whether they know it or not. You just haven’t articulated them YET since you haven’t experienced much in life YET. You aren’t suppose to have all the answers right now (even I don’t, and I’m in my final year of uni) but, that’s ok.🥺 There’s an amazing KZfaq video that I watched ages ago and it’s called “My WORST Break Up Story (Animated),” and the main message of that video was “When tragedy occurs, it’s to YOU on how to respond.” I’m not saying that you shouldn’t be in a rut because, that’s just impossible. Everyone experiences being in a rut at least one time in their lives, however you need to accept that this is temporary. It’s ok. Forgive yourself, don’t beat yourself. Do something about it! Pick yourself up, as if you were the hero being knocked down by the villain in an anime series or in movies. This is what I did to start climbing out this type of rut. I listed down 20 things about my personality and 20 things I’m interested in (This isn’t permanent, it’s just to get you thinking). Afterwards, I tried looking for jobs related to what I was interested in (For me it was technology), and I used the 20 things that I wrote about my personality to see if that job would be something I could genuinely enjoy doing (It could even be something entrepreneurial). Just as a starters, you could assume that money isn’t an issue for simplicity of this “exercise” and prioritise your happiness and genuine excitement about the topic (That’s what I did anyway). Being open-minded here is important, because you might end up seeing something that sounds weird or you might think it isn’t for you, but in the future it could actually be for you, plus you’ll be unique and it’ll be a great story to tell. Once you have a general idea (doesn’t have to be a specific job role or whatever), and you understand the magnitude of opportunities available for you, use that as motivation to get through A2 levels because your grades are actually decent for AS!! Perhaps try starting here, and I hope this helps!☺️

That is a situation. If it’s really making you unhappy to stay, I would consider it but I would advise understanding the pros and cons. Year 13 is harder and doing it alone would be a mad one. Having supportive peers is crucial. Don’t make a hasty decision. Really think it through. All the best :)

Very interesting question Somaia! Thanks for commenting btw and I appreciate the praise! :) I don’t see the point in resitting your A-levels imo because from what I understand, A-levels are the qualifications you need to get into higher education (University) or get into higher apprenticeships, but you said that you’re already in university so I don’t understand the purpose of resitting A-levels anymore😅. To me, A-levels is your golden ticket to uni, and you’ve already given your golden ticket to Willy Wonka. Plus, if you did resit your A-levels in university, that’s bare time that you could’ve spent on your degree to get a first, or possibly getting a part-time job or time you could spend on beefing up your CV and experiences by joining societies or by volunteering, or even start a side hustle. Unless you’re thinking about switching degrees maybe? If so, then speaking to your uni is your best call.

I am already retaking and its hard to do the exams in the midst of the pandemic specially when you've missed classes and stuffs so I know it might sound me being extremely dumb but does retaking for like the 3rd time worse than retaking for the 2nd time? Is how many times you are taking your exams mentioned in your certificate? And are your previous grades like for the 1st and 2nd one considered?
@aldrichcervania8833
@aldrichcervania8833 3 жыл бұрын
Nothing stupid about that on this channel, trust me mate. I personally don’t know anyone who retook sixth form for the 3rd time. You really gotta ask yourself and have a DEEP think about what you wanna achieve in the future and the career paths you might wanna take. One of my closest friends did not do well in A-levels and recognised that it was his weakness, and explored other options and he ended up doing an apprenticeship with an opportunity to learn at uni. I can’t tell you what you should do or what path you should take, everyone is riding on their own roads in life. If a degree is something you need to accomplish your dreams, then you should heavily consider 3rd-time retakes but, i would personally talk to your closest friends/family members/teachers about potential opportunities. Not calling you dumb in any way, shape or form, I’m saying, make sure you understand what’s out there for someone like you, and make a rational decision from there i.e., seize your opportunity. When I say “opportunity” I mean apprenticeships, freelancing, sports, degree apprenticeships, internships, work experience, entrepreneurship, volunteer programs that could lead to paid programs etc. Research them The number of retakes wasn’t on my certificate but, I’m not sure if its the same for 2021. Majority of uni’s only look at the best grades.

@aldrichcervania8833
@aldrichcervania8833 4 жыл бұрын
You good bro! Firstly, if your A-level’s were linear and not modular, then your AS grades won’t count but either way, it’s not worth retaking the year with your grades because it’s not “bad enough” which is a good thing! You don’t need to repeat a year! If your A-level subjects are modular and they do count towards your final grade, then I would consider resitting 1 or 2 exams to help put your UMS points up. Most uni’s will focus more on your target grades, personal statement and references but, it’ll also depend on the competitiveness of the course. If I were you Julian, I would continue to Year 13 but, this time you REALLY gotta hustle for those top grades... and I’m talking starting serious revision from October (even September) all the way through to June, so you have enough time to revise Year 12 content whilst learn Year 13 content. Time will fly. Do loads of past paper questions, ask teachers for feedback etc and remind yourself why you wanna get to a top uni every week. Imagine if you had to sit your actual A-levels the following January. You’re gonna need that motivation and self discipline throughout the year bro. A-levels are no joke, but you got this💯
@julianlucas3553
@julianlucas3553 4 жыл бұрын
@@aldrichcervania8833 hey bro. The A2 exams will count for the final grade. By modular I think you mean AS counts for half in first year while A2 counts for half in second instead of all the A2 counting for 100% in second year(linear)? If that is the case, then yeah our school system was initially modular but then because of Covid, it is now extremely focused on A2. I'm not sure I will retake some AS subjects then, although I would do it after A Levels and skip a year if necessary. By retake I mean be a private candidate and study independently for the exams...Thanks
@aldrichcervania8833
@aldrichcervania8833 4 жыл бұрын
Since your grades are focused on A2, then it’s not worth retaking some AS levels since they don’t count towards your overall grade. Worry about your target grades that your teachers/head of sixth form will set for you, and you gotta try convince them to raise them to the grades you need for Uni. Uni’s will look at your target grades, then your previous exam performance, then your personal statement and references to determine if you’ll be the right person to give an offer to and if they believe it’s doable for you. Universities are only able to offer places to a limited amount of people (due to staff, resources etc), but at the same time have enough people join the course in the first place. With your AS grades, I don’t see a problem tbh. Those are solid grades. All you gotta do now is make sure your target grades is what you need to do be, ensure your personal statement and references back up the fact that you’re a suitable candidate for the uni, and that you’ll actually achieve those grades at the end of the year.

First I wanna say, all the best with sitting those exams bro!💯 (Also thanks for commenting lol) I could make a video on this topic if that’ll really help you and potentially others too since there’s a lot to say but, for now, to answer your questions and to give you some of my advice... -Which past papers did I do? All from Edexcel (my exam board at the time) from 2007-2017 probably at least 3 times throughout the year + some Solomon Papers. -Which questions did I do? All of them most likely. In a nutshell, there are 3 things you need to do to get your B in maths next month... 1. Do AS MANY past paper questions as possible, remark your work, and be HONEST with your learning. (This will increase your awareness and expose yourself to as many different styles of questions which can be similar or the exact same in the Autumn exams = easy marks) 2. Understand WHY we use a particular method to answer particular questions. (Some questions might be worded differently in the real thing but, involves the SAME methods that you’re familiar with using. Those questions are designed to trip people up. Make sure that ain’t you!) 3. Do past papers AGAIN but, in timed conditions a week or two before the actual exam. (You need to have a taste of TRUE exam conditions, otherwise you’ll sh*t yourself since, you won’t be familiar with the exam pressure. You need to be calm, and focused. Drink water in the exam. Get enough sleep the night before.) Use examsolutions (Like I did) to see how questions should be answered, and try answer them yourself. He explains everything with clear steps, which is much better than the trash mark schemes the exam boards give us. Pay attention to how he approaches the question, and mimic that to the best of your abilities. Examsolutions content is also free... let me say that again... FREE. He explained maths better than what my teacher did, smh... The trap that people fall into watching his videos (and other educational maths videos online) is the illusion of learning... so make sure you can ACTUALLY answer the questions on YOUR OWN, and you’re not just passively listening to him answer and break down questions. Try to answer it yourself at the end. It’s alright to make mistakes, I made bare... Remember this quote: “The master has failed more times than the beginner has even tried.” Hope my advice was useful😃

@aldrichcervania8833
@aldrichcervania8833 3 жыл бұрын
This is mouthful😮 Thanks for commenting and sorry for the late response. Here’s what I’d say☺️ The first problem “why are you not doing so well in any of your subjects?” To me it seems that you have a lot of family pressure to do well in subjects you aren’t too keen on studying (or if you are, you aren’t revising effectively or enough), and the school is giving you pressure as well, therefore all these false expectations and opinions are clouding your judgement and is blocking you from being yourself and you’re not able to think independently without feeling bad about yourself since you’re concerned too much about what others think of you. It’s summer holidays now Oreofe. My advice is to focus on yourself. Ask yourself DEEP questions and don’t be afraid that you don’t know the answers to them (questions like: who am I, what gives me the most energy in life, and why? Etc). You need mental clarity from the noise. I recommend getting a journal/notebook and write down your thoughts to get that mental clarity. (Also, try do the 16 personalities test to gain more insights about yourself. It’s free!) Be brutally honest with yourself. The relationship you have with yourself depends on your ability to be humble to yourself about your strengths and weaknesses. You have too much noise in your environment. Once you have some mental clarity, hopefully you should be learn about why you didn’t do well in your subjects, or what you actually wanna do for uni or, what you wanna accomplish in life even etc. Bro, even I don’t have answers to questions like that, but it’s about trying and being curious in your pursuit for answers. I hope this helps Oreofe. Again, sorry for the late response😔 I hope everything is alright

How many times a student can retake A level exam?
@aldrichcervania8833
@aldrichcervania8833 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm... I don’t think there is a limit. However with that in mind, you MUST consider how much time that’ll take because you’ll need to revise for your other exams and when you have too much on your plate, you’ll end up spilling it i.e., you won’t perform as well since you haven’t dedicated enough time for your other exams. My advice, speak to your teachers to know the process and take their opinions into consideration. It’s gonna be up to YOU to decide how much you can handle. Personally, I would recommend only resitting 1-2 exams. 3-4 is stretching it and it’ll depend on how quickly you believe you’ll absorb the content. I’ve seen many people do 2-4 and still do well, but like I said, it REALLY depends on the individual. This is something you have to learn yourself but, you gotta know the difference between wishful thinking and the real truth. (Elon musk quote there). It’s subtle but deadly trap to fall into. Don’t underestimate A2 content. Hope this helps you make a decision🤝

It sounds like to me that you’re still unsure about your uni choices Osmaan. Try list down the things you value the most for University (e.g course, facilities, student life, city vibes, social opportunities, career prospects, teaching standard, accommodation, distance from home, reputation etc), rank them and compare them to the Russell Group Uni’s you wanna apply for (If you retake and defer) and UOL. Another factor in your decision-making is ensuring that you prioritise long-term benefits over the short term. You don’t wanna be living life with regret, you know? I’d also consider what your gut feeling is telling you. Unfortunately, it’s difficult for me to give you a black or white answer. Hey! At the time I didn’t consider retaking A-levels privately just because I thought it would be more of a hassle. My sixth form allowed me to stay. Also I thought that wherever you go anyway, your grades is all up to YOU. I used school as a way to have structure (i.e. they set the deadlines, it’s a place where I can get feedback, and learn at a consistent pace), be social and I thought I’d be more motivated being in a school setting BUT with a totally different mindset. I wanted to win. I wanted the high grades the second time round. The only con I saw with going back to sixth form was that I had to embrace the embarrassment/shame of everyone knowing I failed but, honestly, no one truly cares the same way you do because everyone has their own problems. I just shrugged it off, had a little laugh about it, and got back to business… I reminded myself that I’m there to get into a Russell Group University, and I was willing to help the year below achieve that too

im not sure if you'll see this considering this video is almost two years old however i was wondering if you could resit for only ONE paper? example if my paper 1 went well but i messed up in paper 2 could i resit for paper 2? or do i have to resit for the entire subject? and also since universities see your AS grades (or atleast people living abroad in south asian countries) wont it be wise to repeat AS if your grades arent up to the standard?

@aldrichcervania8833 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure but, I was able to do that for my A-levels back in 2018 but not sure now. You should talk to your teachers and they should sign you up for a resit for that one particular paper (if it’s possible). In terms of repeating the year, that’s your call. It really depends on how bad your grades are. For my case, it made sense but for someone who’s needs A’s but got C’s in Year 12, I personally don’t think it’s worth resisting? (But it also depends on grade boundaries and how confident you are getting those marks across all your exams)

@@aldrichcervania8833 hi, I got a grade c in maths and it has held me back when applying for universities this year, I have one offer from a uni that ranks like 100 (I mean they’re only like 125 unis in the country). I feel like I can do better if I actually work hard this time do you think I should do it? I want to be accepted into at least an average to high standard uni so I get a good education. What would you recommend provided that I’ll have to do this a level on my own without a teacher ?

@JoelR574 Just go there on gcse results day and give them your results. Give them an excuse for why you have to repeat. Colleges are more likely to accept you. It's been a year now so I've been more serious at the new school. Looking to go to a top 10 uni now or degree apprenticeship. Don't regret retaking tbh 👍

@aldrichcervania8833 2 жыл бұрын
Short answer - yes but it’s a very difficult road. You need to be living and breathing A-levels during the year and I don’t know many people who have pulled it off. Not saying it’s impossible, but in this situations you don’t want to make impulsive decisions. I’d advise you to think about your progress and plans. There’s a balance between being “realistic,” knowing your own abilities, and your execution. I had the similar thought process as you, and I concluded that for me personally, I needed an additional year, so I resat the year. What you do is up to you.

You need 3 A-Levels at least. Most (If not all) uni’s requires 3 A-levels for you to get in. If you’re doing 4, you should be able to drop one subject

@@vrk1dc1ty ohhh noted! Yeah you can completely change your A levels if you decide to retake them. You should be allowed to anyway, but, you gotta show that you’re driven and that you mean business if your teachers/school are hesitant about it. Show them through your words how much it means to you to bounceback and show how desperate and motivated you are to do well in your retake year. In essence, show you care and stand up for it. Overall, you should be able to :)

@@aldrichcervania8833 yes the problem is that I did tell my form tutor and my careers advisor that I was thinking about resitting a levels and changing economics for something else as I have a feeling I'm going to flunk my upcoming assessment in a week (I typically get crappy U grades for my economics mocks because I was very clueless about it until last month and I'm predicted an E) but she said that im better off doing a foundation course in accounting as my sixth form doesn't allow retaking as it is expensive and pointless as people who do so usually improve their grades by a small margin. They did suggest however that I should calm down and atleast try my best.

I feel you bro!😭 Depending on your school, what teachers look for DRIVE. Don’t treat teachers as your enemies but, people who are trying to help (it’s their job at the end of the day). Passionate and supportive teachers will be able to sense if you genuinely care about something. Depending on your school, if those teachers see your drive and you shown that you’ve made mistakes and you’re more than ready to bounce back, they’ll refer you to stay. Also, predicted grades and PREDICTED only, and not your true results. You may not like my next advice since you’ve probably heard it before but, work hard. 6 weeks yeah, you can definitely get higher than U’s but it’s gonna take work. You gotta put your big boy boots on. I know it’s tough but, it’s all part of your self-development and your character development. Think of it like you’re the main hero of your story. You’re a noob right now (Everyone starts here), but as the story continues (the ups and downs), you level up, you become smarter. Stronger. Physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. As a 16-17 year old, schools don’t teach us these fundamental life lessons. It’s always about “get your grades” that’s it. Nah man, it’s actually deeper than that. But know that, there is hope! There is a way! It’s your story. There’s this quote “Much effort, much prosperity.” I can make an entire video on this topic lol, but for now, put your head down and start working bro. I’ve made a video “How to start studying for real” which you could watch and I think it’ll be helpful for you, but don’t waste too much time thinking about work. What’s more important is that you START. All the best🤝
