I made this video to sort of explain to a few of my friends in FB groups the difference between leveling a reticle with the top of the receiver and aligning a reticle with the barrel

Years ago I made a device that you're using in my friends machine shop. After watching your video, I got it out of the reloading cabinet and showed my wife and how it was identical to the store bought one you were using. We laughed at how many scope mounting experts there are on KZfaq. Your video is the first one I've seen that describes the inaccuracy of leveling the scope with the receiver if there is an offset. Your video should be the go to video in scope mounting. Aligning the reticle with dead-center of the barrel is the only thing that matters for long range shooting. Bravo Kid Pellet. I might add- confirm that the reticle is dialed to dead center in the scope before mounting. I'm still shacking my head at how well your video is. Take care, Mike

Thanks man. If you hadn't picked up on it I'm not trying to get KZfaq famous lol. Just as short and to the point as I can be. I think I've gotten into several "debates" on "the best way" I wish them all luck at the end and keep doing what I do lol

Awesome! New to all of this, about to clamp down my first scope and looking for info, found video after video shot in LED lighted studios of guys throwing bubble levels onto things and barking at me. Being reasonably mechanically inclined, I had concerns about my base being centered over the bore (new mount for very old receiver) and knew there had to be more to it to actually get it right than tossing bubble levels on receiver and turret, especially in my case. You directly addressed my concern and showed a good method to get the job done. Thank you.

WOW !!! i have never had that tool from brownells , it def will make leveling easier . i use many levels 1.spirit/bubble level A spirit or bubble level consists of a small glass tube filled with alcohol and a little air bubble sealed inside. The top of the tube is slightly bowed so that when the surface under the instrument is horizontal, the bubble will rest exactly in the middle. The accuracy of the bubble levels is determined by how “flat” the bowed top of the tube is , so thats why they are called "SPIRIT" LEVELS ... LOL ......when shopping for a level ,try to get the one that always has the smallest bubble in it , nothing worse than having a level with an gigantic bubble in it ! the smaller bubbles tend to be more accurate i do believe . i have one with a bubble so big ,it barely touches both lines in the center of the level ,i use this to get a ballpark figure , quick reference then i fine tune with a level with much smaller bubbles . the first thing is to a a gun vise thats for bench shooting , and even .cleaning /maintenance . once i secure my air rifle in it , i have several knobs i turn for different positions . i too ,place small levels on the air rifle and also the scope ,,,,,,,, and the turrent . once i have that done i hang the ol plumb line ,nothing beats a plumb line ! 2. ------- BULLSEYE LEVEL , one of my very favorites !!!!!! A bull’s eye level is a kind of spirit level that allows two-dimensional leveling. These levels are used in construction by carpenters but are also found in compasses and camera tripods and other devices that need to be prevented from tipping into certain directions. Keep in mind that unlike the bull’s eye level, typical rods or tube-shaped levels only consider one dimension. if you KID PELLET and people never heard or thought about using one of these , maybe you should seriously think about it , they are really awesome . 3. THE GOOD OL FAITHFUL AND TRUE """"""" PLUMB LINE """"""" . PEOPLE ,,,,,,,This instrument has been around, at least, since ancient Egyptian times. The plumb bob looks like a thick metal pencil stub, which is weighted down at the point. The instrument measures vertical depths if you tie it to a string and let it hang down until it stops moving. It is basically a vertical counterpart to the water level. Workers use it for making concrete deck footings. 4. CROSS LINE OR CROSS HAIR LEVEL . IT PROJECTS A PERFECT SET OF LINES ON THE WALL .This is a slightly more accurate level than the sport laser level as it projects a cross on the wall. It ensures you have a straight x-axis as well as a y-axis. Like the spot laser level, this level is also static and can be fixed on the wall and moved with your hand to point a continuous line from one side of the room to the other. They are slightly more expensive than spot line levels and are perfect for putting up pictures, hooks, shelves and any other thing that you need to attach to the wall. they are also very USEFUL for setting up your air rifles with the precision of the gods lol ! 5. CANT OR WONT ? SHOULDNT BE IN YOUR VOCABULARY !!!! LOL , SERIOUSLY "CANT" , THINK ABOUT HOW YOU HOLD YOUR AIR RIFLE LEANING RIGHT OR LEFT , THAT WHY YOU SHOULD HAVE ALWAYS A LEVEL THAT MOUNTS TO YOUR DOVE TAIL ,PICATINNY OR WEAVER SLOT . IT WILL GO BEHIND OR UNDER THE EYEPIECE END OF SCOPE . IT WILL ALWAYS TELL YOU IF YOUR RIFLE,BOW OR CROSSBOW IS PERFECT IN THE RIGHT TO LEFT .why is this important ? , ever spin a top ? ,the centrifugal forces at play are really amazing . !!! well think about the projectile that usually spins to the right because of the rifling in the barrel . it will always eventually creep in that direction eventually ! so at longer distances ,it would be better to shoot at your target with your rifle or whatever cocked a little ,i mean just a little more to the left . learn about cant is all i gotta say ,it will make you a better shooter !!!! NOW FOR ANYONE WHO IS IN A HURRY , MIGHT NEED TO GET CLOSE TO ZERO AT A PARTICULAR DISTANCE , SET UP A TARGET ,SECURE YOUR RIFLE SOME WAY WHERE IT WONT MOVE WITH VICE IF POSSIBLE ,BUT OUT IN THE WILD , BELTS,STINGS ,ROPES MIGHT BE ALL YOU HAVE . PLACE A TARGET SOMEWHERE AND MAKE A MARK ON IT BY PUSHING A STICK THROUGH IT OR WHATEVER .TAKE A SHOT BY PUTTING CROSSHAIRS RIGHT ON IT . THEN SEE WHERE IT ACTUALLY LANDED , BY WALKING TO THE TARGET OR IF CLOSE ENOUGH LOOKING THROUGH THE SCOPE . NOW WITHOUT MOVING THE RIFLE , ADJUST YOUR CROSSHAIRS RIGHT WHERE THE PROJECTILE HIT ON TARGET ,AND WHA LAGH , EEEEEAAAAASSSSYYY PEEEEEEEZY , TAKE ANOTHER SHOT AND YOU SHOULD BE RIGHT ON OR VERY CLOSE !!!!!..... if you want to be a marksman ,a precision shooter , must make sure all the factors are tuned in .

You can just look through your rifle into a mirror and just rotate your scope till the vertical reticle line is going straight through the middle of your barrel.

Thanks for the video. Brownells sells this tool that costs to manufacture few bucks for $49 plus shipping AND it needs a rubber band to stay in place.... how low we have fallen as customers that we buy this sh..t and don't tell Brownells to go fck themselves.

Thanks' I usually only make a video of something informative if I get asked about it in a FB group or if I'm just messing around lol. It is only available through Brownell's online as far as I know. It's a little expensive for what it is but it saves me so much time setting up my scopes its worth every penny to me.

For consistent accuracy, align an anti-cant device to a scope's reticle, NOT to the scope body. With each shot, the possibility of the rifle being canted occurs; therefore, PRIOR to each shot, the anti-cant device (spirit level?) must be checked. A tuned anti-cant device to a scope reticle will not need to be recalibrated when moved to a different rifle.

i have never found any bore and receiver that was in perfect alignment on any air or powder rifles that is why the way you are showing is the only way to mount a scope properly for accuracy at different ranges

If I have a 20 MOA RAIL on my 10/22 does this change the use of your tool and your process?

If your amounts were severely off to one side say an 8th of an inch then it would change just a little bit. If that were the case I would use this tool to align my radical and then 0 my gun at whatever distance I wanted a 0 at and then check the radical alignment again after it was 0

Is your scope canted at a different angle of the bore or offset? If the scope is offset, then your logic is flawled. If your scope is canted like how you showed on your diagram, then your mount is garbage.
@kidpellet6544
@kidpellet6544 9 ай бұрын
The scope is aligned with the center of the bore. There is no flaw in this logic. Not all receivers are made perfect, not all mounts are made perfect. Aligning the reticle with the center of the bore will work for those that have perfect equipment and those that don't. How do you think 45 degree offset sights work? They aren't level with the receiver either. Nor are they made perfect.
@geoffrey3289
@geoffrey3289 9 ай бұрын
@kidpellet6544 45 degree sights are offset I understand that and offsets pose no problem. But what your showing is a canted sight. So if by showing that your gun rails are canted which you explain how does any of what you did fix this? Unless you can machine a rail to be perfectly centered with the bore what you are doing would not fix anything. Seems to be scope leveling with extra steps. What am I missing?

If you watch Rick from airguns an outdoors channel by Pyramyd air, doesnt use this process. Eyeballs the stuff carefully and uses an bubble level on the rifle an scope only an then a plumb line... Somehow still shoots 50 yrds and farther,all w off the shelf equipment! A famous American sniper debunked alot of this on a video and said as long as the rifle is level and the scope is level with the bubbles, it doesnt matter. The scope and rifle being level together will compensate even out 2000 yards and more! Fireburner or pellet rifle yardages. A professional, now how is that?
