James Kalm has a self-appointed mission of keeping an eye on the visual cultural happenings in New York City, particularly the Downtown end of the scene. “Retinal Hysteria” curated by Robert Storr is a two-gallery extravaganza of a show featuring some of the most eye banging works produced in the past fifty years. Storr has picked works from over forty artists that present a broad geographic and chronological spectrum, ranging from underground comix artists to Hairy Who, to the California eccentrics, and more. (From Wikipedia) ”From 1990 to 2002 Storr was curator, then senior curator, in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art…” From 2005 to 2007 he was visual arts director of the Venice Biennale, the first American invited to assume that position. Mr. Storr was appointed professor of painting/printmaking and dean of the Yale School of Art in 2006, and was named the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Dean in 2014. A musical introduction is provided by Adjua Ajamu. This program was recorded December 2, 2023. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk

Thanks @michaelmoffett896 All the kudos must go to Robert Storr. He's curated several shows locally that are museum quality, and written books that fill in very important parts of recent art history...JK

I agree but James a lot of art and artist in NYC would not be as visible and have their Art work reach the art world outside of NYC if it wasn't for you and your nose being stuck in every little nook and cranny art gallery on the mean streets of NYC . So dude your the man keep it up the art world needs you . @@jameskalmroughcut

....and if an artists soul has passed into another dimension, I'm sure in that dimension the only KZfaq channel available to watch - enjoy would be the Kalm Report.

The title "retinal hysteria" made me think this show was going to be about challenging the way we see. I thought maybe it would be op art type work.

Yes, Jim Nutt is still alive and still making GREAT paintings. Just wondering why you mispronounce his last name? Love your videos.

Interesting show, but curatorially it felt like the sum was a lot less than the parts, and the parts were often a bit mediocre representations of fairly big names. And yeah, Robert Storr has his own very big name, so I know I'm probably rubbing some fur the wrong way... The Hairy Who artists, especially Ed Paschke, held my interest by a mile, but that's partly b/c I'm not as familiar with them (vs. say, Robert Crumb or Peter Saul). Too bad, I usually revel in art that is a bit punk, a bit Outsider Art-like, but I struggled to find the gems. The small drawings and watercolors were of merit however. Anyway, you delivered as ever, James. And thanks to Kate too. And cool little bit showing Basquiat's old studio! "The Pearl Paint is dead. Long live Pearl Paint!" heh heh. 🙂
