Because of the recent regulation changes regarding retirement visas and extensions for Thailand I am now getting asked a lot about other retirement destinations.
Nowadays I don't hesitate at all about recommending Vietnam's to retire to. Retirement in Vietnam is definitely an option many should consider. It's a beautiful country and a lot of choices as to where to live. If you want to retire in Vietnam you're probably wondering what some of the costs of living in Vietnam are.
In this video I'll discuss some costs and averages but keep in mind depending on somebody's lifestyle and needs their mileage may vary!

My wife is Vietnamese,we have a house in long an can qiouc/and district 4 Saigon,Vietnam is going to be the new Thailand I see more travelers and expats, the money you spend in Vietnam also has a lot to do with the area you live in,I’m retired and invested all my life in real estate and Not worried about how much I spend on food,we also own our own motorbike 🏍 Vietnam has some nice places for rent in every area cheap,you talk to locals and they will help you find one or point you in the right direction

Went Vietnam last month visiting family, the food, shopoing, hotels were cheap, prices you cant get in US, and Da Nang the best beaches thete.

JC, I just spent 3 months in Da Nang and your prices look spot on to me. I spent about $950 a month, not including insurance, and lived very comfortably in a 1 bedroom apartment 1 block from the beach.

I've a place on the Mekong. Built it ten years ago for about 45K. 3000 + sq ft. No where near retired but it makes me want to. Just north of pakse on the east side of the river. The views are spectacular so yea between Vietnam and Laos it would be cool.

The vegetarian food there is great - there are a few days a month where the more devout Buddhists only eat vegetarian so the choice is excellent and it is super cheap...Grab will only get bigger - when I was in Saigon last fall I saw a news story that Softbank ( huge Japanese conglomerate ) had just invested 500 million USD into Grab so look for it to expand even more...

The only update is althoughall COVID requirements are lifted, post pandemic it's much more difficult to live in VN long term than previously.

Apple Blossom White. I was 77 on 10/24. I wish JC would give the name of the new apartment building in DaLat, for I will move there next September, because of the cool weather, and the inexpensive studio apartment, with hot water instantly, and water, electric, and wifi included.

ty hiesler found the city’s in Vietnam cleaner,liked NhA Trang, Da nang,Hui Hanoi. Found Saigon nice but very muggy and hot. Still my favourite. Easy to get around Vietnam. Not that easy in Thailand 🇹🇭.

Great video and info, JC! I would add that you can easily open a bank account with cash. I recommend the Digital Timo Bank which is associated with a larger national bank in VN. You can initiate the account online but you'd have to go to HCMC to finish the process...at there "hang-out" location on Pasteur street in D1 (free drinks!). After that you can transfer money into your account using TransferWise or other banks, and your Debit card works everywhere i've been...from Hanoi to Vung Tau. Best Wishes!

Timo is not a bank. It is a card service that has an agreement with a local bank.

Yes if somebody wants to travel to one of the places they have one of their "hangouts" that is a good option. But I'd like to correct you when you say you can deposit cash into a account within a Vietnamese bank. That is incorrect. Foreigners cannot deposit cash into their account and it has to be received from outside the country as a transfer. I've been told this by other people living in Vietnam and from the bank itself when I opened my account.

Thanks, JC! I had the same experience at other VN banks, esp. in US dollars. But with Timo i was able to deposit VND directly when I set up the account. I didn't try depositing USD, so that could be an issue. Of course the laws are always changing and the bank employees are as confused as the rest of us about transactions with non-citizens, but using Timo has worked out well for me. Best, JD

We hope to slow travel around SE Asia for 2-3 years when we retire. How do we know what medications are available in different countries ? And something like pacific cross sounds good. Do you also have travel insurance ? Would pacific cross cover you in Malaysia and Philippines too ? Thx !

The vegetarian food in Thailand and in most Asian countries (eg China) is primarily due to those catering to Westerner tourists - it is not native Asian cuisine typical of the various regions.

Look up vegetarianism and Vietnamese culture and beliefs. Vegetarianism has played a central role in Asian culture and its relationship with food and animals for millennia, in the most part due to religious principles. What is practiced by most lay-Buddhists in Vietnam is referred to as chay ky, or part-time vegetarianism, and just requires abstinence from animal products for only a few days each month. Typically the fourteenth and fifteenth and first and thirtieth of the lunar month. It’s at these times that many restaurants will serve vegetarian dishes or host meat-free buffets. Part-time vegetarianism, chay ky, plays other roles in cultural and religious traditions in Vietnam, especially around the time of death. For many practicing Buddhists, the period immediately after the death of a loved one is a time for minimising sin to help the departed in their journey to the afterlife and reincarnation. For most Vietnamese making a vegetarian diet choice, or an chay as it is referred to, the reasons tend to differ from those making a similar choice in the West. This is especially true for the older generations who are often more devout in their religious beliefs, and follow the principles of ahimsa, or nonviolence.

Nat looks very happy with the Breakfast, and with the wet low-hanging clouds and everyone bundled-up, was reminiscent of a summer day in Alaska. Arriving in BKK with your coats reminded me of one of a heartwarming experience I had that you only find in Thailand. I did a short trip from Alaska in winter To Thailand and took my heavy parka for the return flight to the arctic (which I left in the Cab from the Airport) To my surprise the Bangkok cabbie found it and was good enough to battle rush hour traffic for about 45min to return it to me at my hotel. With a look of frustration and bewilderment, he handed me the huge and heavy Parka and said: "You no need this in Thailand, Thailand not cold!" I tried to pay him for his time and he flatly refused.

@@jamesspignesi1 For the best part of 15 years I worked in Prudhoe Bay/ Deadhorse, and worked in a few places like Pt. Thompson, Pribilofs, Kotzebue and Livedn in Anchorage and Fairbanks for a while. Are you in Alaska?

@@jackoneil3933 No longer Alaska but lived there for many years since about 1974 before the pipeline was finished. Been to many of the same locations you have but lived mostly in Southeast. Not trying to brag but i have often said Alaskans are some of the toughest people in the world and are incredibly resourceful because of the remoteness and tough conditions. So when many travelers and expats complain about Southeast Asia does not have this or that , no hot running water, not enough good transportation , their foreign food they miss, how expensive they think things are, not being willing to learn a new language because perhaps they are lonely, the weather and not will to adapt. My advice is perhaps better you stay home with your tv and or leave Southeast Asia. Nice to have made contact with you brother. If you are ever in Thailand it would be nice to meet. I agree about Alaskans, but not only that they are some of toughest people in the world (We both have stories) but the real Alaskans, the real 'Sourdoughs' were, and are some of the most practical and unpretentious and compassionate people you will find in North America. I went to Alaska to work in the oilfields at 16, and might not have lasted if I were an adult and realized what I was in for. I was in Prudhoe Bay for the official opening of the pipeline, and after spending time in Asia I used to say "If you can make it Alaska you can make it in Asia", Whenever I went to and from Alaska to Asia (I lived in Japan, Malaysia and spent a good deal of time in Thailand), Asia, even China and India were not really culture shocks because like in Alaska people connect with people rather than cultures or a country. However, returning to the Lower 48 was always more of a culture shock and stressful, mainly because of culture which seems to be even more challenging now. (Americans were recently ranked the most stressed and angry people in the world). I'm striving (meagerly albeit) to leave the U.S. and look for a life that by comparison to today felt a lot more like Paradise, and my first destination would likely be Thai or, Malay and then VN. @@jackoneil3933 I totally agree about the lower 48 going there (outside) as we Alaskans call it was often very stressful. Being so used to the friendly people of our state and arriving in Seattle was never easy. Unlike Alaska you can,t just walk up to someone and say hello or ask for directions. One reason i love Thailand so much and the Thais most are very kind and helpful. But the almost constant moaning from many of the expats and some other YT channels NOT JC about other channels and how much they dislike the so called hardships > I always think about our life in Alaska. Maybe of these expats would be dead within days. As you well know Alaska will chew you up and spit you out if you have no common sense. Will be writing you directly soon..

So what exactly is wrong with travel insurance if your stay is for 6 months or less? This will cover most if not all contingencies. Maybe for longer stays you can keep extending your travel insurance?

I'm not exactly sure who said there was anything wrong with travel insurance. Why do you think there something wrong with it? For short-term stays it's a great option. And there is no mandatory requirement for any kind of medical insurance so it's just exactly what it's called, "insurance".

Dalat and Danang are definitely cooler that Ho Chi Minh City and other areas of the south, but if you get near the ocean in places like Vung Tau, you have plenty of cool breezes coming off the ocean throughout the day. I spent 6 months in Ho Chi Minh City and moved to Vung Tau about a month ago. Way nicer here, especially the traffic. Living costs are about the same here as in Ho Chi Minh.

Oh geesh - that means we can expect an onslaught of backpackers. What is NOT so easy in Vietnam is establishing a long term visa where investments in property or more substantial belongings are both justified and protected.

Which website do u use to search rentals in Vietnam? thx

I mentioned in a previous video about searching Facebook for expats groups. Most websites you'll find the information only in the Vietnamese language. But if you can read Vietnamese then just do a Google search and they'll come up.

Problem is _(like Thailand)_ the Vietnamese government can suddenly come up with a rule about extended visas being granted only with proof of medical insurance. And given that health insurance companies do not cover people above 70 _(or with preexisting conditions, which are normal after a certain age)_ one can _(as old retirees in Thailand are suddenly finding out)_ be kicked out of the country in one's old age after living there for decades and have to try and relocate back to the US. Thoughts on that JC?

Yes. Get a non-immigrant O visa with the one year extension for retirement. No insurance needed.

JC, how long have you been retired? I was curious how much inflation has affected your budget, I can only base my experience on inflation in the states.

Steven I retired to Thailand in my early 40s. Yes the cost-of-living has gone up throughout the world and in all countries. So it's all relative. Hopefully over all those years cost-of-living increases have kept up with the cost increases. But even with inflation rates the cost of goods and services are still a fraction of what they are in our home countries.

Hippie wannabes and tweenies who think living off mangos and papayas as they squat or live in hostels in between participating in drum circles who cannot show a reliable means of legal income certainly qualify.

Brendan I think it's all relative. All countries have changed so much over the years and you can probably say not for the better. So you just have to choose the lesser of all the evils. There is no Utopia or nirvana.

Just to share with you. Here in the US I prefer to cook my own food with fresh ingridents and my cost is 6 dollars a day. At 350 in Vietnam,housing, that comes to 4000 a year. The trick here in the US is to own a house outside the major centers. You probably going to spend around 3k on property taxes and miscellaneous. Your information is great for a person that wants to live overseas but It maybe a option to live in the US if someone research.

Yes it's very true Jay that you can live inexpensively in some areas of the United States. But what do you do on that type of limited budget when it comes to getting sick? How can you afford to get medical treatment? Just what people pay for their homeowners insurance and property tax I can live a whole year in Thailand. So yes, if you live very rurally and grow and cook your own food it's an option and one for many people that don't have enough accumulated assets to make a move to another country. Yes as meat is expensive in Asia. So duh my first learn words was not din Cafe. ND WAS millionaire when I exchange for dung. The people are great however meat is expensive in Vietnam so duh....

Seems laundry cost more. I live in Hawaii and cost me $20 for coin operated to do laundry. Most $40 for comforters and larger items. Is it for 2 price?

Thailand is fine. The stray dogs and the barking dogs especially are a bit much, since I am shell shocked and jump at the slightest noise. I wish that would stop. It was an unforeseen annoyance, but it was my choice to come here as a guest.

I really haven't found many places in Southeast Asia that use checks for any purpose. If you deposit a check into a Thailand bank it takes almost a month to clear. Can I ask why you wouldn't just do a simple transfer into her bank? Also there's other services like Xoom or Western Union and a couple others where you can send the money and she can walk in and pick it up.

"Has to end up"? I'm not exactly sure what you mean by that. I have traveled throughout the Philippines extensively. I know the upsides and downsides. There's nothing that would ever force me to live anywhere. There's always an option! And nowadays for me specifically I prefer Thailand for many reasons. Also for me Vietnam is a second choice but living full time there would be based upon desire not necessity. Thanks for your comments.

It is an obstacle outside of tourist areas and with older people.

I rented a house here that has hot water everywhere. Ist time for that, not really common yet. Up to then all the hotels and apartments I used had only hot water boxes on the walls in the showers.

We have young children. Can you make a video about the costs of full time helpers, like nannies, cleaners and drivers for families who want to move to those countries? I know that in the Philippines a full time domestic helper costs between 100 and 200 USD a month. What about other countries like Vietnam or Cambodia or Thailand.

It is hard to make a blanket statement about costs of housekeeper's in Vietnam. The costs vary widely. Ask the locals and expats in your area of interest to get a feel and negotiate, but don't be a hardass about it. They areas where there are lots of expats will cost you more than small towns obviously.

Vietnam is the new Thailand. I wont hold my breath for Thailand to undo their requirements. VN wants the pollution-free cash inflow from our pensions more, it seems. In Chiang Mai, you will need to hold your breath a few months of the year! LOL
