A very honest appraisal of life in Thailand by John imo , one of the thing expats have to remember if you in a tourist destination , i.e. Phuket , Pattaya the vast majority of Thai people have moved there to earn money , therefore most relationships are based on money , it's that simple , enjoy your time there but don't be foolish with your money & emotions.

Thai-American here! Please, please, please, learn Thai if you plan to stay in Thailand long-term!! You will get a better experience and a whole new world will open up to you when you can communicate with the locals. Fluency will get you loads and loads of Thai women! Remember, there are more women than there are men in Thailand. It's reported the ratio is 4 to 1, women to men. For every 4 women there is only one man. Thai women are open to dating foreign men but their biggest hesitation is the language barrier. Do yourself a favor, and learn Thai!
@MargaritasinParadise

I have mixed emotions on this. I know you are right though, maybe 15 years ago I started a Thai language course. In the afternoons I would come home and talk to my in-laws practicing my Thai language. My wife didn't like this as she thought I was learning to quick. She was scared at one point I could understand both Thai & Issaan to well and asked me to stop the school. Later I found out she didn't want me to understand her parents as sometimes they didn't talk good about me. Looking back, her life was good and she was protecting her interest by keeping me in buffalo status. Anyway, I'm steadily learning now.

The Value system in Thailand is different. My X-wife couldn't believe that I had this massive home but my parents didn't live with me in the USA. 20 yrs ago, Thai children went to work at 12 yrs, now most graduate high school. Most main stream essentials in Thai life haven't risen in price in over 20 years. You can still buy chicken/rice for 20baht or rice/vegetables for 10 baht, baht bus is still 10 baht, gov't rate healthcare is mostly free for Thai's. The Thai family is relied on heavily to take care of it's own without much gov't intervention. Still Thailand is getting better everyday. The pension system/OAA started in the last 20 years and has more than doubled in allotments since it's beginning. Nothings perfect but it's accepted by Thai standards and it's definitely getting better. Thanks for your input.

@richardmartink679 It's really been a mix group of people. I have to assume everybody had different priorities when it come to family. Colin, the lawn bowler relies on his kids/grandkids summering with him. Ken, sailed around the world, family visits often. Leo from Leo Bar, uses technology to communicate with his family. and, Even the most recent John misses England and is splitting his time more and more between here and there. In all honesty, I think, I have only interviewed 2-3 people who don't have family ties.

Hey MiP/Tom! Sorry to make suggestions/requests in public but couldn’t see a link to send privately as I’m not used to watching on my phone while I’m here. Have you ever done a video on the difficult but inevitable question of what happens if anything by happens to someone if they pass? (If you have, just reply yes and don’t read on!) I offers sit on a balcony at night at look at a different landscape each visit, but you notice day after day week after week that less than half of the condo you look at are unlit and uninhabited, some are actually in a state of disrepair! It got me wondering if people have died in the past and with no Thai family but Albany accounts in credit do they just stand empty until the money runs out? Is it enough to have a will in the uk or do you have to do one here too? I’d think it would be quite a fascinating subject for one of your vids, if a little dark - maybe if you do make it leave it until Halloween, or maybe release it in time for world will day! (I’ve no idea what day that is! Or if it’s even s thing!) I also wondered if you needed to contact a neighbours in an emergency, I know you have the Jurassic office who could contact them at an extreme emergency (flood, death, buggary or that kinda thing Thanks tom! You make really enjoyable and entertaining , and in fact, life changing vids! :)

Great ideas. Actually I have thought of it before but haven't acted on it. I took lots of notes. You're right about the condos in general. Another thing I see is old cars and motorbikes sitting on flat tires and basically just rust in the garages. My lkast building had 2 Harley's & 2 Ducanti Motorcycles sitting all together, all the tires are flat and half rotten, Security told me these bikes haven't been moved in over 10 years. Definitely makes one think. Thanks again.

Hi there Enjoyed the video , budget is very subjective, if you need alcohol, western food , and buy your company then your budget is much greater than not needing any of the above, example 400 baht burger or 55 baht Thai lunch , 80 baht beer or 6 baht water , 5 beers 400 baht + double for the lady drinks or 30 baht for 5 waters ( away from the bars ) . Retirement visa costs 1900 baht (£41 $55 ) as opposed to 13000 baht ( £280. $ 355 ) and is very doable , if I can anyone can , my immigration office is not to busy maybe takes 2 - 4 hours depending on how busy it is , Who does John use for his health insurance if he doesn’t mind passing on the company name , I’m 61 and nearly all companies I’ve tried have a 200000 baht excess and are are around 4 to 5 thousand baht per month , which I expect but not the 200000 baht excess Regards Davy 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇹🇭

This is a little off topic but are you allowed to carry pepper spray legally in Thailand? What about tasers or let's say switch blades? I live in Nevada, which is an open carry state, so I always pack a gun, but I know that would be impossible in Thailand, although I have gone to some gun ranges and shot in Rayong.
@MargaritasinParadise
@MargaritasinParadise 11 күн бұрын
I just Googled this "Civilians found in possession of pepper spray can by law be jailed for up to 10 years and fined as much as Bt1 million", "in public, it is illegal to carry a knife deemed to be a weapon. Knives with blades longer than 6 inches or designed primarily as weapons are a no-go.", "Tasers are classified as non lethal weapons in Thailand and hence can be kept in home or car for self protection. They are illegal to be carried in the streets" I hope this helps. I've carried for many years in the US and still possess a valid CCW but personally I don't have the same concerns in Thailand as I did in the USA.

Thai people will not give you any trouble unless you are looking for it. There are no street gangs like in the West, just petty crimes e.g. pickpocketing, tourist scams..etc. You're more likely to get into an altercation with a foreigner in Thailand! Foreign men are usually the aggressive ones, especially when they're drunk. I live in Southern California and I feel much safer in Bangkok, especially at night!

I’m surprised he said the ATM rate was rubbish… as far as I know the Visa rate is the current rate the trick is you must decline the ATM conversion offered just let visa take care of it.. I use Charles Schwab no ATM fees they reimburse and third party charges as well. Fidelity and others offer the same
@MargaritasinParadise
@MargaritasinParadise 13 күн бұрын
This is a good point! I've only used an ATM a few times as I have so many other options. I know the bank rate is usually a half point lower than the actual exchange rate. Here's an example right now the current XE rate is 36.6799 USD to THB. Bangkok Bank is 36.20 USD to THB I recommend if you're going to use a credit/debit card to definitely use one with free foreign transaction fees. Most banks charge 1-3% on their cards. Charles Schwab which I also use still has this charge but refunds you the charges at the end of your monthly cycle. Unfortunately they dont reimburse for the end charges at ATM you are using which is most likely around 220 Baht. For that reason, I would suggest limiting your ATM withdrawals by making the largest withdrawals possible, usually around 20K baht. Thanks for your input. I can see this is another great topic idea for another video. Thanks again.

@MargaritasinParadise
@MargaritasinParadise 4 күн бұрын
I'm not the tax man here. My opinion is we just have to wait and see. I think the intent was different than what many youtubers are creating. I don't believe the Thai Gov't would chance a mass exodus of retirees to other countries. Even my Thai lawyer told me, retirees were over thinking this. So basically if you're like me; average guy, probably bringing in less than 1 million baht a year from abroad, from a country that probably has tax treaties like the UK or USA, Then most likely you won't have a problem. The original intent was wealthy Thai Nationals bringing in millions of Dollars from overseas. KZfaqr content creator started putting out there "what if" questions. Which created all of these questions. Definitely not very responsible. I hope this helps.

You can stick this guy in Brits loving Benidorm and what he says to you is the same . As a "so called " expats I live 7 different countries , learned 7 difference Langagues and have 5 X wifes from different countries and 8 engagements from different counties . My only issue is I am a stupid male trusting in women ... But today in Thailand NOT . I pay max 3,500 baht each month for everything .. live less than minutes from Thai floating market and less than 2 Kms from Jomtien beach .. cheap charlie . Need to be better .. Brit... just smarter .. I SPEAK THAI typical lazy brit and I was born in UK. Brits just lazy .. when comes to Langagues .. Obviously your perspectives differ much. I think most people move here with their own ideas of what they want and could careless about the judgmental minority of the world. I say all the time, why would someone live in a seaside community and not be able to see the sea, while others find other priorities in their accommodations. Being able to maintain a strict budget is overwhelming for some while others have endless funds and spend like there's no limit. Others immerse themselves into culture and learn when ever they can. Others see learning a language to be a waste of time as their language seems to work good. I know even more people who can careless what other people think or if others wake up, every morning with a smile. They are the complainers of the world. They are every where. They find it their mission in life to bring happy people down. They disagree with everything especially, if their perspectives are not the same as others. In Thailand, an adult is over 20 years of age. I don't think anyone here is condoning having a relationship with a minor. Thanks for your input. The topic has given me possibly another video topic. Thanks.

I don't believe you are British ( English speaking ) , your grammar & punctuation are atrocious , alternatively you did not go to school in the UK.
