that story you told about the guy paying for the family house and then getting the boot happend to my friend. He met a filipina in our country that was married to his neighbour and she told him about her beautiful sister that wanted a western man . My friend took the next flight to ph and met her and her family out in the provinces . He stayed for 2 months while they bled him dry for every peso he had. He bought a new flat screen tv , computer , mobilephones , he built a pig pen , renovated their house , bougth them a motorbike , lent money to her sisters business and so on . In the end he didnt have a peso to his name and then when he wasnt a atm he wasnt interesting anymore , he had to borrow money from friends and family and sell of some of his stuff he had here at home to afford a ticket home. He returned home bitter and alone and broke and to this day he still doesnt want to speak about the experience . That brings to mind a lesson my father thought me . Never borrow more money then you can afford to pay back and never lend/give out more money then you can afford to loose .

I met my Filipino wife in Hong Kong. She was mid-30s and I was mid-40s, about a 9 year gap. We dated old-style for 6 months before she moved in with me. Seven years later we now live in Antipolo and own a number of residential properties as well as a commercial property. It was my idea to move here because I had had enough of expensive big city life. She had no idea as to my finances or circumstances. Her only question was whether we could afford to, not how much cash did I have. I guess I got lucky.

My retirement is a EPIC FAIL. I came to the Philippines to lay on the beach and drink beer...Ha, Ha, Ha, Turns out that's not my style. Two months in I adopted a Filipina with 5 school aged kids. They take all my time and money and LIFE IS GREAT ! Like Paul is fond of saying " If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans....Good video Paul.

Good line: Only put in what you can afford to lose!

Even if the law is on your side, nobody cares. This is why contracts in the Philippines don't matter. A contract is only as good as the court that will uphold it. Do not invest money in Asia. Not in a business, not in a property or anything else. Rent everything and be ready to move somewhere else, if the crap hits the fan.

Never will I ever buy a house or land in the Philippines. I don't care how much I love them. If I'm financing the property, I am having full control. I would only buy a condo there as an expat can own a condo. People get pissed at each other all the time and one cross word and you as an expat are going to be in the wrong even if you are in the right, will find yourself homeless. Too much to risk. Rent your place or buy you a condo. That's the safe bet. That's why I like you guys already there, that have already done the recon work and cleared the minefield. I will notify you guys prior to me landing there for any advice when I try and hookup with you guys while I'm there which will be sometime in late 2022. Keep up the good work. Giday good video i met my wife on line and her sister lived 3 minite walk from my place we chatted for a while then went to meet her aboout a year later she came to australia we married and been together 12 years we had come here to phillipines for holidays ended up buying a small home i knew if we broke up idd never gat anything out of the house. She asked if idd concider retireing in phillipines when i do retire i actually liked the idea Well i have been here 2 years love . Actually wake up happy every day to get out and do something . No stress here laid back you need to reamber urr a visitor and dont upset any one .idd never concider getting a buisness here

Regarding the guy that was fired and then planted coconut trees to deny access, you say your friends mistake was his attitude? I say his mistake was buying land he didn't have permanent rights to access in with the title. Imagine spending millions of pesos to develop your land only to know that unless you keep someone happy they have the right at any time to deny you access. You would be a fool to put yourself in that position.

Great report Paul. You are one of the most informed , and decent expats reporting from the Phillapines. My Filapina partner has her own house, so it makes life alot easier. We are currently living in Australia at the moment.

I would have been there more but this situation we all find our self in has but a damper on it. I got lucky in two ways. I met a girl on line from there and I had already been through a bad divorce from a girl from Venezuela. I met a young girl from Columbia and she was a fashion model and oh so hot but was so high demanding in all ways. To make a long story short I put the girl from the Philippines through a lot before I decided that she was on the up and up. Just do not jump into any relationship to fast or YOU WILL GET HURT in more ways then financial

WOW Paul, One of the greatest 25 minutes of youtube. You brought back my faith in the male human being, it's not all bikini's, pretty young girls, and a carefree lifestyle. Everyone looks forward to retirement in some form, but you still must keep your thinking cap on and guard your witts and heart. No need to be an SOB or cruel, just come with your eyes wide open ready to study and learn about a new way of life. One hint I could give is to make very good friends with the mother whether you marry the girl or not, get the oldest family member to like you. My mother in law has told everyone I am not her adopted son, I am her only son since her own son died. My wife is not the oldest sibling in the family, but everyone depended on her for so long that now it is her and I who are asked to make all the family decisions of importance. I hope to visit with you in a more secure place. If you know a youtube named Steve, our house is being finished within walking distance to his house. When the virus allows I hope to come back to the Philippines to live and work on our business. And to visit with the KZfaqrs, and tubett's.. Great show, great conversation, great job today.

Good story and advised, I made sure our property is on the main road, we cross through no ones property, but we are very freindly to our neighbors, we fed the intire elementary school 3 times since we have been here, our neighbors look out after us , my wife and I have neen here 12 years now and we are happy

This reminds me of a story of two Japanese, who said they wanted to buy a farmer's coconut plantation for a fabulous price. Only problem was getting rid of all the trees for the development. The Japanese offered to chop it all down for free and clear it. The farmer was all too happy to agree to the deal. The Japanese hired harvesters and trucking to take away all the coconuts and tree lumber. The farmer never heard from the foreigners again. Locals also get scammed by foreigners.

I know of a couple of cases in Thailand where local business people made it impossible for foreigners with businesses - one guy set up an internet cafe, but the street vendors set up their stalls so as to make it difficult for customers to get into the premises. The business failed of course. In the other case, a foreigner running an Irish pub had a jug of boiling water thrown over him, and he was then hit with metal bars. ( Thugs sent from another competing bar. )

Too many people make it seem like it’s just so easy but it’s not and there is a lot wisdom and realistic viewpoints in your statements. 50 -75 year old guys aren’t getting all these hot chicks because they look like Richard Gere . Paul, Just bought a small piece of land on an island in the filipines for my kids when they grow up and for now put a modest house on it as a Holliday house. Used a solicitor for the whole process and bought the rite of way/ access road as well. Been married for 7 years did it the right way with the right girl..it’s easy if you step back, look at what you have and want , but most of all find a trusting wife…

With everything that has happened over the last year I I’ve pretty much changed my mind about retirement in the Philippines. The government is way to cozy with China. Don’t want to be stuck there trying to escape when China takes over. Too many expectations from fiancée. Going to break that off. Don’t feel right about abandoning my family here either with everything going on. Devaluation of dollar vs peso another concern. Too many negatives right now. Don’t have that warm fuzzy feeling anymore.

Paul, you nailed it on all your points made. I’ve been coming here 10 years, and 1 1/2 years full time in retirement now. I could only add to the stories you told with similar stories I have seen with my own eyes. You made your points with political correctness and I agree with not giving advice but just sharing what you have seen. You just pointed out the “land mines” naive guys might want to watch out for. Some may like stepping on them, as you pointed out.

Thank you for this great video. The property access through someone else situation is the same all over the world. Here in the USA, you certainly can't force someone to let you through his land to access your property.

Very good points especially about buying land. I'm sure access roads is something we usually don't think about. Even if my neighbors are good people I would be very hesitant to buy property where I can't control my access.

I have stupid friends here. One gives debit cards instead of ring , one has been talking to a girl for over 4 years and sends her money weekly and has only seen her for one week in 4 years , the other married and built a house and business but wasn't there for over a year and his girl got knocked up and it isn't his and he's ok with it. Alot of desperate men. Side note , become an Amazon affiliate , I didn't know about the loctote bag until you mentioned it.
