Part 2 of 2
Planning for retirement and replacing a work paycheck with savings can be a daunting task, especially with the current challenges of market declines, inflation, rising interest rates, and the threat of recession. Christine Benz, Morningstar's director of personal finance, is passionate about simplifying retirement portfolio planning and has identified six retirement blind spots:
- retirement date risk
- sequence-of-return risk
- low-yield risk
- inflation risk
- health care/long-term care risk
- longevity risk
In this second of a two-part series on Building a Better Retirement, Benz explains how to mitigate these risks and offers solutions to ensure a financially secure retirement.

I watched both parts of this interview with Ms. Benz. I have followed Ms. Consuelo from her days on WallStreet Week and Ms. Benz for at least a decade. I loved both parts of the interview for the most common sense explanation of 6 points that are critical in planning and managing the retirement. Thanks to both.

I worked for an electric utility - seemed secure. One day they told 124 of us it was nice knowing us here is a package. I was 55 years old. I did find work pretty quickly and worked 9 more years.

Nothing's certain in life. On may 15, 2024 HardRock resorts management had a town hall meeting for the Mirage/Hard Rock resort employees. Hard Rock management gave the news to 3,300 employees that they are closing the Mirage Resort for 3 years for construction of a new tower and renovation of the existing tower and casino. All employees will be laid off. Mirage resort closes down on July 17th, 2024. Just two months notice of closure. Hard Rock reopens during spring of 2027. That's why having an emergency fund is crucial for this modern life. I am one of these 3,300 employees. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

Great information. I tend to agree with Christine's comments of having an annuity to supplement social security benefits, because social security is also an annuity. Also being diversified with other investments like bond mutual funds, money market funds, and stock mutual funds helps in retirement.

For me, I believe retirees who struggle to meet their basic needs are the ones who could not accumulate enough money during their active years to meet their needs. Retirement choices determine a lot of things for future purpose.

The only way retirement money can last is to save as much as you can and move away to a less expensive location, maybe overseas. This is the new American dream.
