In today's video, we share our experience traveling 3 New Zealand Trains, Northern Explorer, Coastal Pacific, and the Tranzalpine. We tell you what to do in New Zealand and how to travel through New Zealand by rail. Trains in New Zealand are a great way to move between Auckland, Wellington, Picton, Christchurch, and Greymouth. We will tell you how to book the tickets, the costs, and other details for our New Zealand rail and ferry adventure. Here is the link to purchasing tickets: railnewzealand.com/
▶️ We started our channel to inspire and share our world travel lifestyle, adventures, and optimistic outlook on life with others. After completing a two-year journey in our Airstream to see all 50 states and 51 National Parks, we left to travel abroad. We have downsized our possessions and sold our home so that we can wander about with only the things in our backpacks.
We love living on the road, traveling each week to a new location. We plan to travel extensively to every part of the world. Ours is not a slow travel lifestyle but rather a vagabondish one. The goal is not to check a country off a list, but to experience it by meeting new people, seeing how others live, and making new friends. We believe in laughing, loving, and living our lives to the fullest.
We are working hard to build a beautiful website where you can get travel information about the places we have been. In addition, we post blog articles to help you travel better. Our channel is a way of augmenting that effort, so sometimes we post videos about how to travel or a vlog showing our lives on the road as we do an activity or an adventure. We also post Shorts, so check those out, too. We hope to entertain you, but most importantly, we want to inspire you and give you the confidence to plan your own adventure around the world.
We invite you to subscribe and comment. We also hope you follow the link to our website and sign up for our newsletter. It's a great way to keep up-to-date with our travels. ◀️

@@RetirementTravelers Oh yes, I love my home country, but we Kiwis tend to travel a lot to see what is out there in the big wide world. The culture, history and architecture out there is so very different from our own relatively new country, but after we've absorbed all of the fascinating differences it's still wonderful to come home to our beautiful Aotearoa.

I went from Wellington to Auckland many years ago on the overnight Silver Star sleeper train. Now I would like to do the day trip to see the scenery. I have crossed the Cook Strait 4 times and the last time I said never again as it was soooo rough. I rode the Trans Alpine return about 10 years ago which was fantastic.

Thanks for this lovely vlog. I’ll be adding these kiwi trains to my bucket list. I’ve done some train riding in the past: in Russia, Ukraine, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, France, Morocco, India, and Thailand. The least favorite was, sadly, the Amtrak corridor from Boston to Washington D.C.: the least exotic and the most expensive. Oh well, some missteps are inevitable. I got to this video of yours from your beautiful vlog of the Canadian trip from Vancouver to Banff. Gorgeous views, thank you very much. I’ve done that route on a motorcycle just for the price of gas. But of course I was a bit younger back then. :))

Thank you so much for this informative video! This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for to plan our trip to New Zealand in December - January. The travel agent I tried to use said that we HAD to take buses and rent cars to travel around NZ; I am so glad to find that isn't the case. I've subscribed and can't wait to see more!

We cannot drive on the other side, we tried in London and returned the rental car the next day. So my question is, "can we travel only by train in New Zealand and still be able to see and do much?" Thank you so much for this vlog. I was so happy when I read the title of this vlog.

You will be able to travel from Auckland to Wellington with stops. You will need to take bus tours from a place like Hamilton. Ferry from Wellington to Picton and train to Christchurch. Take round trip TranzAlpine between Christchurch and Greymouth. I would then fly from Christchurch to Queenstown and do bus/excursion from there. Be sure to go to Milford Sound. Hope this helps. You can check out our New Zealand blogs on our website for more info. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com

Great video! How are you finding the cost of living (transportation/lodging/food/etc)? I read somewhere that it can be pricey there, especially during their summer. Thanks
@RetirementTravelers

It is definitely not a cheap country, but WORTH IT. Costs are probably similar to US overall. We did find many great bargains like museums and botanical gardens that were free. Plan ahead because things like car rental can book up fast. We rode trains and public transport and also found them to be reasonable. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com

Were the seats assigned on the various trains in New Zealand? If not assigned, was it a problem to find seats together? Recent subscriber to your channel and was happy to find this video in your library!

So glad you found our channel. Yes, we did have assigned seats. On the first train, it was a Sunday and the ticket office was closed, but they assigned our seats once we got on the train. It was a great experience overall traveling on all 3 trains and the ferry from Wellington to Picton. Be sure to check out all our New Zealand content on our website and shorts as well. Are the tickets a pass so you can get off and on at different stops with flexibility? Or do you buy for a specific leg and time?
@RetirementTravelers
@RetirementTravelers 4 ай бұрын
You can get off and make stops, but you need to check the schedules. We believe the Northern train is 3 days a week, so you could have a day or two of sightseeing some of the stops. Safe travels, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
