Graffiti Writer RETNA talks about his life, his love, and his motivation to create art.
RETNA is a valiant and innovative unifier of culture. Through his uniquely curated alphabet of old english, hebrew, arab, asian and other calligraphy Retna has created his own universal text by which to translate his emotions, dreams, and poetry. He is also a kind and generous artist whose utmost goal is to share his work and put a smile on the face of those who enjoy and understand his dense rhythmic structures. As gallery owner Michael Kohn notes Retna is "Frans Kline meets Keith Haring," sophisticated yet deeply rooted in the traditions of the street art crews Retna either ran or became member to from the late 1980's til today. He has been featured in numerous museum exhibitions including MOCA's own Art in The Streets, which in 2011 was well attended and lauded as a great testament to how far Graffiti and Street Art have come in the last 40 years.

SUCH A GOOD ARTIST. My god. Can't help but be envious of a guy who can make amazing minimalist paintings worth thousands of dollars in mere minutes as he has his craft mastered. There will only be one Retna.

Yes, he is rich (he not going to dress up all nice to paint when his clothes are gonna get all dirty) and money doesn't necessarily buy happiness. He has his money although that doesn't mean he's the happiest person. My dad and him have honestly talked heart to heart about he'd choose the happiness we had together in my family over all the money. I know what I'm talking about, my dad and him grew up together, he really did start from the bottom. Of course he's had his ups and downs but he's a really a nice person. So I get annoyed when I see how people who've never met him talk shit like they actually know him.

I tell ya i know him and i don't know how you have bad days n got all that money. We from the same community alot of us would love to be in his place Graff writers/ artist. when he was younger he would drink n wild out start bangin on folks we be like whats up? He just had alot of unresolved issues of pain i guess i know cuz i been through alot. I'll send up some prayers for the bro. I want him to be spiritually free it's true money can't buy you love. You can only recieve that from family and God Almighty.

Retna is dope as fuck. He came up from the bottom. I don't agree with a lot of people in the graff community saying he's a sellout. Are you kidding me? You gotta get your paper some how. Keep doing your thing, Moses! Fuck the haters.

Retna is a good artist and I hope he does well, but he's a troubled guy. I hope he finds some peace. Keep creating. What about Chaz Bojorquez?
@yourlocallad4647
@yourlocallad4647 8 жыл бұрын
Chaz Bojorquez is an originator/innovator, if it weren't for him there probably wouldn't be a 'Retna' and the L.A. Graffiti might look slightly different without Chaz's contributions. Just my opinion.

Hard to even see him now he was our mentee in graffiti in 1990's he on a Plato we cant understand. Seems like he has alot of hate inside of him that he tries to work out in his art. Most of it is in spanish though can't read it. im happy for the bro. to see him come up from back in the day .But when your makin hundreds of thousands of dollars painting when do you have a bad day?
