Since I get asked this one all the time I thought I would make a short video on it. For the record I love and collect for the PSP and Vita -- heck I have plenty of videos to attest to that. However, when I want to emulate some old games I choose "off brand" handhelds every time: Here's why.

Well I'm glad you are getting some use out of your RG I have the original RG-350 but hardly touch it having CrazyMac's Ultimate Retroarch build at a whopping 180gb on my Vita which comes with The Bezel Project pre-installed so no black borders on games and Project Darkwave on my PSP which contains almost everything the psp is capable of running It's also over 100gb of retro games

I just recently purchased the RG351P and it is quite awesome. I use the ArkOS operating system. They just released the RG351M which comes with built in WIFI. I agree on using these devices for emulation, because they are built for them. I'm a retro gaming junkie! I also just purchased a PS Vita to use for remote play so I can play PS4 games and the wife can still watch TV! I really dig the channel and feel like we have similar passion for the old school games and devices. Keep up the videos and rock ON! (like it's the 80's!!)

The only one of these reasons that really matters to me is the analog sticks. They really are way too small on the vita. I can’t really play fps games on my vita because I just can’t get the accuracy with the tiny sticks. But I put up with it because it allows me to play just about any game any of those dedicated portable emulators can plus vita and psp, so it’s more functional, and with emulation you hardly need to use the sticks anyways. And since the psp was always meant to be able to play ps1 games very well, the vita can do that flawlessly too, whereas a lot of those emulators struggle

I love using the RG350 because it has the Rumble feature! Plus unless you're hacking your Vita you can't get the Tony Hawk or Duke Nukem games on the play store. So RG350 for my retro, and Vita for the really awesome HD games!

Aren’t you forgetting that the Vita can also play Vita games? I hear what your saying on the Anernic but you also haven’t talked about the OLED screen on the vita. One last thing, while I agree that having the screen stretched is totally bogus but you have the ability to play both aspects on the vita where on the other system you don’t. Not sure how widescreen games would look on that 4:3 screen though. One last thing is you can get an adapter for the vita for around $5 to use a regular card on the vita this no need for the overpriced proprietary memory card.

If you use a computer it defeats the purpose for emulation. Your PC is in almost every case a WAY better emulation device than the Vita: Skip the Vita and just emulate from PC. I have been in IT for well over 25 years. I used to work in auditing years ago where I regularly flashed devices, I have likely flashed thousands of devices. I think I may have bricked 2 or 3 devices in all that time, but I warn EVERY TIME that this may brick a system. Because that is the nature of writing firmware. There is always a small possibility that the firmware has partially failed, or some kind of odd compatibility causes a problem. Even the creators of the firmware warn you of this. It is unlikely, but it is a possible outcome. Responsible technicians will always warn a client of that. GREAT COMMENT!
@cheeeeezewizzz

@@Retr0Rob I disagree. Being able to plug up the vita gives it functionality similar to the switch, you can play your emulators and your vita games on the TV and then just unplug and go out with your vita in your pocket and play on the same save files and system. There are obvious advantages to doing it that way rather than running an emulators on your pc and separate emulators on your vita.

You forgot about extra buttons on the top of the console. I hate to use Vita's rear touchpad and I hate to use psp's analog stick to be able to use r2 and l2. Yeah I know that you can setup the controls for every individual game and stuff, but in some PS1 games I NEED TO HAVE ALL 4 BUTTONS IN PLACE. Grab another TF card (don't spend a lot in case you have a hardware issue) and try a new firmware -- There is a bunch of videos on installing it. I enjoy using the RG 280 and I enjoy playing my modded new 3DS with custom firmware the reason I stopped emulating on the PSP was because the emulators are outdated and no one was putting out new ones except for the newest Gameboy Advance Emulator temp GBA which runs great but if I want to run turbo Grafx or PC Engine CD games It's a pain in the butt on the PSP you have to convert them to ISO wav Toc And even then it's buggy whereas the RG 350 or 280 it plays standard bin/cue images You even have to convert PlayStation games and even that's buggy sometimes

I agree. Modern day systems are more up to date. I remember when I was tweaking with an old PS2 with the dead drive, and it was around then when a port of RetroArch was announced for the system. Cool idea when you think about it but in reality back then it could only handle Famicom, Genesis, SMS (picodrive emu) and Gameboy. For the rest I had to use old outdated emulators that worked or not. Right now it has probably changed, but I dont feel like trying it out again soon. So it turns out that old and tired PS2 was the best for playing... PS2 via USB due to the dead drive. And I guess it applies to PSP too. Its best for PSP games because of 100% compatibility. Although even this will change eventually as PPSSPP is a really great emu and can upscale PSP games to a better resolution. Just like it goes for older systems I mentioned someday - playing N64 on a real hardware will give you only 240p video, so if you want your games to look a lot nicer emulation is the only way to go

I have both devices and rarely use the RG350. I agree about the flashing issue with the Vita, but none of the other reasons are a non-issue for me. Although, the joysticks could be larger on the vita. I love the larger screen of the vita, I don't play portable games on a big screen, don't play these games with others. I have bad eyes and appreciate the larger screen of the Vita. All these cool emulation devices are out, but their screens are just too small. I wish they were at least 5 inches. Steam deck is nice but you can not pull it out of your pocket the way you can with these devices.

Great comment! If I had to choose between the 2 as my only device the Vita would win hands down, but largely because I really like a lot of the games that were released for it. Here is my problem with the android based emulators. All of them are weaker than my phone, and the only functionality they add is dedicated physical controls which I can get with a ps4 controller or a controller grip. They don't do anything my zfold 2 can't do better, and I have a 4:3 aspect ratio too and I can do video out to a tv through USB-C, and I can easily water cool it when I'm plugging it into a tv (put the phone on a piece of plastic wrap on top of an ice gel pack. In addition my phone gives me a pc dex interface when using it on the tv so that's even more awesome. The vita on the other hand plays vita games, psp games, and ps1 games natively and does all of that on the go as well as emulation. It stops at n64 pretty much, but honestly I can live without n64 on my vita in exchange for everything else when my phone in my pocket happily emulates n64 gamecube and ps2.

Pixel perfect still has black bars around it, which was my point. If they bother you, they do, and if they don't they don't. I also mentioned that the Vita is better performance on many emulators. Just because you have different preferences does not invalidate my points. Also native video out is a pretty big one if you want to play locally with friends. I find the controller more comfortable for prolonged game sessions as well as I have big hands.I absolutely love the Vita, but I use it to play the Vita's excellent library.

PS vita has an OLED display, besides the when in 4:3, the display area is similar to the Rg350, so this point is moot.

So you only run the risk of bricking a vita if you update them? So if im just playing my already downloaded vita emulators already in the card then it doesnt run that risk?
@Retr0Rob
@Retr0Rob 2 жыл бұрын
It is true that You actually do run a very small risk of bricking the Vita just by updating it. Seriously though, it's super unlikely. Firmware is not the same as your Vita's memory card that games and saves are installed to - If your memory card dies you just replace it and re-load your software and boom: ready to go. If your Firmware fails you no longer can use your Vita. Note that the Vita really is well designed and it is super-unlikely that flashing a custom firmware will brick it: much less likely than it was years ago. Think of it like routine surgery, and how you always sign a waver that you understand that it is possible that the surgery could go wrong. It's unlikely, but it COULD happen. Custom firmware is not official code. I've been working professionally in IT for 20-some odd years and used to do audits and upgrades of off lease laptops / desktops and servers. I have done firmware updates in the high hundreds at least and have only had 2 permanent brickings - both on game systems. One of them was a PSP running super-early custom firmware and the other was a prototype handheld (that one really sucked). I want to really emphasize that the Vita is VERY, VERY unlikely to die to to a custom firmware update. On something like the RG350 much of what is in firmware on the Vita is on the first card -- and if an update fails just re-write the first micro SD from your PC, or buy a new micro sd and write it to that if the sd card itself failed.

I had this discussion in the threads below: While it's really cool for recording performance for videos/etc it's not really a comparable output technology as you need a PC to use it. Considering this video is about my choice in emulation devices.having a PC present to display games on the screen is kind of silly as almost every PC is a far superior emulation device to the Vita (or the RG350 for that matter). If you need a PC to do it you might as well just use the PC for emulation.

@@Retr0Rob you are right the way I do it is I connect my vita to my laptop then my laptop to a tv and use my ps3 controller which is not 100% practical but it's better than nothing because if you only play your games on your laptop you can't take it with you everywhere so you have both small/ medium/ and big screen to display your game. In my opinion the advantage of retrohandhels over the vita is that they are much easier to get into ps vita doesn't run some snes games perfectly except if you overclock it and for N64 you have to use a standalone emulator from retroarch for gba you have to overclock your vita and use different emulator for some games. You need to read alot in which emulator is the best in retroarch for example. Which is alot of work to do plus the size of it is little big so it fits on your pocket but it's not comfortable to walk with. the main problem I found with the Chinese retro handhelds (I have gkd 350h) is the sound The lowest volume is so high for headphone users this was a deal breaker for me I don't know if that's the case with the other handhelds but I read that some people had the same issue with the rg350 for example.

I've recently gotten a rg350M and today completed doom for PS1. Great little handheld. Only thing lacking is that it cant emulate N64 I hear, which is the main console I grew up with. I'm also thinking about trying to install a PSP emulator, but have no experience doing so. Can anyone recommend a good PSP emulator to install, assuming it can handle it? Thanks!

Not really.... It's kind of the reverse (though I love the Vita). Not really sure you watched the video before you commented as the very first 2 points are hardware "format" related.The Joysticks and Screen format have not "grown" on the Vita. They cannot be changed as the Vita is no longer produced. RG series have already had a processor bump from the JZ4770 to the RK3326 this year: They are not all "the same". It also changed screen resolutions depending on model. The RG35X series is by no means perfect, but it's inexpensive and diverse.
