Hi retro-lover! In this video you will get an in-depth look at the kinds of chords YOU can use when writing 80s and 90s retrowave (retro pop, dance, etc.) tunes! You'll learn the very basics of how chords are built (using major and minor thirds), and how you can extend basic chords (triads) by adding extensions (7ths, 9ths, etc.). This will add a ton of new shades of emotion to your music, and give your retro songs a more sophisticated sound. I hope you enjoy!
VIDEO SECTIONS:
- Some Retro History: 1:04
- Chords and Emotions: 4:55
- Some Examples: 6:52
- Building (Complex) Chords With (Simple) Intervals: 10:23
- Building Basic Triads: 16:17
- Beyond Basic Triads: Adding Flavor with Extensions: 20:01
- Be Sure to Experiment!: 32:12
- Breaking Down More Examples: 33:27
- Conclusion and Review: 43:44
RESOURCES:
- MIDI Chord Analyzer plugin - EDIT (7/22/18): It was just brought to my attention that the original download link for MIDI Chord Analyzer is no longer functional; it appears that the developer's website has been suspended, leading to a dead link. However, a very resourceful viewer noted that you can still reach the download through an archived version of the page, here!: web.archive.org/web/201603161...

Dude, please more more videos about this! I know quite a bit about music theory and have been playing the piano and guitar for years, but in the 45 mins you did this video along with the MidiChord Analyzer, I've probably learned more than I did in several years. That MidiChordAnalyzer app really helps you visual the chords which is impossible on a regular piano. For anyone learning piano or any other instrument, I highly recommend downloading and installing it (the biggest pain in the ass) because you'll be able to clearly see the relationships between the different notes on the keyboard better, which makes guitar or other instruments so much easier.

Great video Ethan. I found it really helpful. I’d love to see a follow-up video from you about the expansions you mention at the end of the tutorial - linking chords, voice leading and substitutions. I know you provided some links for this but I really liked the way you broke down and simplified things in this video and I’d love to learn more from you. Either way, you’ve made something I’ve struggled with for some time really easy to understand here. So, thanks again!

This was cool! And it is complex. Like you say - comlex, comlicated chords.. like extension 7 and 9 and even...11.. It was like science too me. Very comlex theory. I am far away from being musician, but all the time have interest in music. Mainly, as a listner. So it was cool theory, hard one. I need to practice it. And size between notes =3 , it is basic. and it is goes like extend them by adding 3. And do minor and major out of them. And move chords by octave up and down. I get the idea!

Hello again my friend, thank you so much for your very encouraging comment! I truly appreciate your supportive words and feedback. Thanks a lot for your suggestion, also. When you say the image of the piano, do you mean the video of me actually playing the keys? If so, that's a great point, and I'll try to enhance that in future videos. I actually had planned to switch the view of my hands to full screen more often, but I have to do that live while recording since I have one camera and combine sources using OBS. All that is to say: I think you are right, and I'll try to find a better way to show more detail of my playing next time. Cheers, and thanks again!

@TheGhostMall
@TheGhostMall 6 жыл бұрын
Hello, thanks a lot for your kind comment, I'm glad you liked the video! :-) Ahh, that's a good question about the marks on the keys: Those small stickers indicate the top and bottom of the vocal range of some singers I work with. I use them as a guide so when I'm writing melodies I stay within a realistic/comfortable range for the singer. I hope that answers the question, and thanks again for watching!

@TheGhostMall

Hello, thanks so much for your kind comment! I'm really glad you got something from the video. I'd love to help you with an electric piano recommendation; it all depends on what you'd like to do with it, and what features you need, really. There are quite a lot of affordable MIDI controllers out there that you can use with a computer and/or to control other sound modules. However, they provide no sound on their own. (I currently use one by Nektar Tech.) Most professional synthesizers also provide MIDI out for connectivity, but are fare more expensive. I usually recommend, for someone starting out, that a consumer-level electronic keyboard with built-in speakers (so you don't have to add those as well) - or at least headphone outs - and MIDI in/out is a good starting place. (It's even better if it has a jack for a Sustain Pedal, which allows you to play much more like a real piano.) CASIO makes a few of these, and you should be able to find a good starter option in the $100-$300 range. I hope that helps!! :-)

Nice video. However there was one thing that might have left the audience puzzled, that is why it's sometimes the 9-chord and sometimes add9-chord. It's a 9-chord if it is continuous line of thirds stacked up to the ninth, and it is add9 if it is the ninth added to the basic triad, meaning that the seventh is skipped. Very different sound and emotion, especially if inverted. I actually prefer add-9 for it's sort of cleaner sounding.
@TheGhostMall
@TheGhostMall 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, and thank you for adding this very helpful comment! Indeed, that is a very important distinction to highlight, and I appreciate you doing so. Nice work man. Really loved this one. Can you please tell us how are you recording audio and the screen of your pc at the same time? Are you using voicemeter or something similar? I cannot figure out how to do it. I'll be forever grateful for this if you could answer back.
@TheGhostMall
@TheGhostMall 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment, I'm really glad you liked this video! I'm happy to help because I totally struggled with this myself, it really is a pain. So, to start, I'm on PC; I believe there are much easier software-based solutions for capturing your screen and DAW audio on Mac, but on PC it's a different story (because of ASIO drivers, etc.) In any case, I tried out a few plugins and stand-alone pieces of software (like Voicemeeter Banana) but unfortunately could never get things working properly. SO, my solution has been to buy a separate external audio recorder (this one here, I did a mini-review: bit.ly/2BvLgSg) and to send a pair of outputs from my audio interface to this recorder, and my mic into another input. Then I record the audio (DAW and Mic) into it, while capturing only video on my PC using OBS. Then I import the OBS video footage AND the audio tracks from the ZOOM into Premiere Pro, sync them up, and edit them. Phew, that's a lot, I know! But, it works, and has been the only solution I could find for myself, personally. One major downside is that this setup, as is, doesn't allow me to live-stream. Still looking for a solution there. At any rate, I know this answer is a bit disappointing, but I still hope it is somewhat helpful! Best of luck, and thanks for watching!

@TheGhostMall
@TheGhostMall 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it! Those bits of tape were actually there to indicate the lowest and highest notes in the ranges of several singers I have worked with. I used them as a guide when writing melodies to ensure that the song would be within a given singer's range. I hope that explains it, I know they look odd, haha! All the best, and thanks for watching.

Thank you so much for this video. I’m still learning and picked up some really nice things. Quick question about the chord progression at 33:57, is that in Lydian mode.
@TheGhostMall
@TheGhostMall 5 жыл бұрын
Hello! Thanks for your kind comment, I'm very pleased to hear that you found some useful information in this video. :-D That's a very good question, and looking at just that 3-chord progression I can totally see why you might think it was in the Lydian mode. If that G Major (starting chord) was the root/tonic/home, it would appear as G Lydian, yes. However, the song that the progression is pulled from is actually in D Major (Ionian). When the Chorus arrives, the downbeat is a D Maj chord. What you're hearing here is the Verse progression. So, although the chords might be the very same, in the context of this song the progression is technically "in" D Ionian. But, taken by itself - with that G Maj as the main/only point of reference - it would be very easy to see this as in G Lydian - since the 4th mode of the D Major scale is G Lydian! I hope that answers your question, and in any case that was a very sharp observation! Best of luck making music, and thanks for watching. :-) p.s. I'm actually working on a 3rd Retro Chords video, and one of the things I am going to talk about is what I call a "modal misdirection," kind of similar to what you experienced here. I hope you may enjoy that video once it's finished!

What video tools did you use to make your intro for your videos? I love the retro tube tv vhs style look you've achieved

Hello again, and thanks a lot, I'm glad you dig the old-school VHS intro! I wish I could take credit for making it myself, but that is actually from a template (for Adobe After Effects) created by a designer. If you'd like to learn more about it, it's available here on Envato Market as an asset: videohive.net/item/logo-reveal-retro-vhs-tape/11057251?s_rank=1 Cheers!

Hello, and thanks for your comment. I'm sorry to hear you are having difficulty using the MIDI Chord Analyzer plugin. I'm afraid I'm not sure how to assist, mostly because I'm on PC and not very knowledgeable concerning Macs. I wish I could recommend a good alternative plugin, but really this is the only one I know with these particular capabilities, especially among free plugins. You might browse the selections on Plugin Boutique, however, because they are always putting out new plugins, and some of them might have this kind of MIDI analysis built in, I'm not sure. Wishing you the best of luck!

Hi, Im going to produce my first trap/rap track pretty soon, and I want it to be a number one hit (haha). I’ve been doing research and have struggled with the idea of making a unique trap/rap song. Because in this genre of music its super hard to create different cords, due to the loud 808 bass drums. I decided that if you want to make something unique and cool, you dont always have to come up with something totally new, use styles from different eras (80s synth) to stand out. Synths are now commonly used in pop and trap/rap, but I want to make my tracks as authentic to the 80s as possible. Using the old school pads, keyboard riffs, and progressions. What I want to do is similar to what lady gaga did back in 2009, using 80s style synth sounds in her pop tracks. I want this track to have a retro feel to it. I hope to learn and study 80s style from this video. What do you think about my idea? How could I make this any better? Thanks for the content, and thanks for reading. Peace.

Hi again Will, very cool, I really like your sonic concept! (I actually used to produce a lot of hip-hop - though it was pre-trap back then - and I enjoy a lot of trap these days.) I think this is a really cool idea, and worth pursuing. You are right to say that trap arrangements are usually sparse, and kind of need to be to make ample room for the huge 808s, etc. That said, there will always be at least some sample, pad, or pluck type thing providing the "sound bed," and to use retro 80s synths to provide that would be a neat way to add your own signature to a trap-style track. I say go for it, experiment, and see what you get! I'd be interested to hear where you go with this, good luck!

Very interesting video. I just feel the DX7 patch used doesn't make hearing the chord easy because each note has harmonics that muddies the chord. Very informative tutorial though

Greetings Rayce, thanks a lot for letting me know what you found, I'm just bummed to hear this! Indeed, I did some more research this morning and every portal I found referring to this plugin, or any plugin from Insert Piz Here, seems to land on their domain, which is now broken. :-( I searched to see if someone had it available for download on a mirror site, but to no avail. I will see if I can figure out an adequate alternative, and I'm going to update the description to this video acknowledging the broken link. All the best, and sorry I couldn't help out more on this particular issue!

Thanks for the tuturial my friend. 👏👏👏 You know i was about to buy that UVI collection, i dont know what to do, buy the UVI C, or save more maney to buy a real synthesizer for 2000 dlls. What you think ? The UVI or Syntronik Deluxe ? Any advice ? Anyone ????
@TheGhostMall
@TheGhostMall 5 жыл бұрын
Greetings, and thank you for your comment! I'm really glad this was helpful to you. To answer your question (UVI software bundle vs. a hardware synthesizer), I'm happy to give you my opinion, but others might disagree. As someone who has owned hardware synthesizers (and still has a couple of them), I find that I almost never use them anymore since there are so many amazing-sounding and easy-to-use software synths. You can have as many instances of VST synths as you want in your sessions, and I find it much more convenient. Now, of course, you would still need some kind of hardware keyboard in order to play the software like a real synth - I use a MIDI controller keyboard from Nektar, the Impact LX61+ - so there is that expense along with the software. And a decent computer is also needed, so when you consider all that (computer+MIDI controller+software synths) the expense can be up there with a hardware synth. But I still choose to make almost 100% of my music with software plugins these days. I hope this is helpful, good luck!
