Vintage Game Consoles Found in The DUMP! Let's Try to Fix Them - One of my viewers found old PlayStation and Sega Genesis game consoles at the city dump so he sent them to me to see if I could fix them. One of them won't play a game and the other won't start up at all so this should be fun!

Those are old consoles. Might have been put up in the attic years ago, now the kids have long moved out and the parents don't think they're worth anything anymore, so they end up at the dump. I was actually surprised they were defective, a lot of fully working consoles end up in the trash that way.

sadly maybe they dont wanna spend too much money fixing them because its not every day you can find an ethical fixer like tronics. Usually the electronics repair industry is filled with scams and overpriced service.

You should visit Germany, some neighborhoods toss out EVERYTHING and it's in perfect condition. Ever since Germany started selling awfully made tools and overall electronics for more then a decade the trashing became even more awful then before and it use to be a huge problem now it's a ocean of trash. They dont even sort or recycle anything most of it ends up as general trash. 5% goes to recycling, 5% goes back to China the rest ends up in landfills ...

that power port solder issue is extremely common on Model 2 Genesis, i was able to get multiple for $5 each several years ago and they all had that exact problem, my guess is the port isn't well braced by the shell so if the console is moved around or stored with the power cord left in it may crack the solder joint like you found.

I gave my grandson a laptop that I had stored away after his died...He complained that it kept getting hot and finally took it apart to see what was going on, it turns out that the heat sink was completely filled with fuzz/lint, whatever floats through a house with cats...It took him almost an entire day to get it cleaned out...I thought it was a small price to pay for a free Alienware m17...

Back in 2010 I bought a media laptop as at the time it was one of the few laptops that had an actual gpu in so I could play online games when travelling, it used to be around 60 degrees celcius idle on both cpu and gpu and kept shutting down even on 800x600 games of OG Counter Strike so rarely used it in the end, after about 4 years I found a cpu upgrade online and it was a socketed type of cpu and when I went to replace the cpu paste was basically a see through layer of what looked like toothpaste, and the gpu had none, that's right no paste on the gpu at all, I repasted them and the laptop went down to about 45 degrees idle for both and the laptop fans didn't go to full each time and I could have it on my lap without feeling like my legs were about to burn.

As a man who has been repeatedly shocked by a PS1, those capacitors on the power board can get pretty spicy. Also the disk spindle piece that is broken is usually just press fit on and can be replaced without replacing the rest of the drive. Old discmans are notorious for it, so you can get replacement pieces

Nice fixes 👍 Interesting to see the insides of this NTSC SCPH-5500 Playstation, seems to be quite different to my Euro spec PS1 PAL SCPH-9002 C version from 1999. Had to replace the cd spindle on it, as 3 pieces broke off from it, and the disc started slipping, making horrible sound, and games didn't work. Glad to hear you're in remission. We might be in a race for who has more hair. lol Worked on tons of PS1s in their various versions. Turning them upside down while trying to load the disc is a dead giveaway for a bad pickup assy. (laser/spindle motor). Some of the older ones had a POT that you could turn up and get it to read but better to replace. Turning it up gave you a little more life but they burned out quick. Super easy and gets you years more enjoyment.

Hey Steve, for cleaning stubborn gunk off plastic, especially like on the genesis reset button, I recommend a nylon dish scrubber. They're super good at getting off gunk without being abrasive to the plastic. I've used some myself in the past and it helps a lot where a q-tip or brush fails.

Sega Mega Drive II I remember getting one christmas during the 90s with most of the sonic games. Sonic 3 & Knuckles were what I played sooooooo much. And Theme Park

Wow! What a nice find! It's sad that people are throwing out this good tech. I'm wondering though, I had laser disc drives work and sometimes not. One thing I noticed that when the laser comes on, it will move up and down to try to focus. Sometimes a thin piece of plastic that acts like a hinge will break and when the laser tries to focus, it will raise crooked and not always read.
