Wow. What an amazing review, I had so much fun reliving the Powerslide experience. Thank you, Posy. I was the co-founder and CEO of Ratbag. Powerslide was our first game, we loved making that game. The visuals were actually much better than the emulator here - much more detailed textures that we streamed into video ram (the first game to do it, provided unlimited textures). On a Pentium 90 with 3Dfx Voodoo1 card it ran at 60fps. Yes, that’s a photo of the dev team including me 😊 Those multiplayer maps were designed to play with the weapons cheats. The team was addicted to playing multiplayer fox and hounds mode with weapons. If we had more time we would have inserted that game format into the interface, but it couldn’t be tested and quality assured in time. Unfortunately, the marketing director at GT Interactive hated the game because it competed with her brain child TransAm Racing, so she didn’t release it in the US (only 5K copies). But it had a big fan base in Europe and won IGN PC Racing Game of the Year and runner up for best engine. Thanks so much for capturing the Powerslide experience, I’ll be sharing this with the team

I grew playing almost exclusively racing games and it’s just not the same as it used to be. Small teams (or maybe less well known teams) making arcade racers is so much harder to come across. It’s honestly sad seeing how few racing games are easily available on a common platform like steam Say what you will about the latest Need For Speed game but I really appreciate how it leans towards the side of weird arcade racer vibes

@@Sam-uf8noUnbound is bad overall, but that's because of the story, progression, the horrid Speed Pass system, among many other smaller problems. The physics are a little jank but it can be pretty fun, and I like the Burst Nitrous system, as well as the art style (wish they went all out instead of mixed media though). I wish they didn't screw it up because it could've been a great game in spite of the stupid controversy about the cel-shader characters and flashy effects...

There is something about games like this where they hide a picture of the development team in the level that just fills me with joy. Max Payne 1 did that as well where you beat the game on its highest difficulty and beat a final challenge level and it gives you access to a room with the photo of the dev team as well as the reference photos they used to make their levels. I just love that sort of thing where these were real people who made a game they were passionate about and had just as much fun making it as you do playing it. I really miss that sort of feeling in games. Don't get me wrong I know that there are people in this industry that really do care and want to make amazing experiences plus I know that this usually leads into a "Modern Gaming" discussion but why can't we still have these sort of things in games? Even the OG Modern Warfare 2 had that really fun Museum at the end of the game that you could check out the 3d models and weapons that even gave you a fun challenge by pushing a button and having to fight all of the museum enemies. Maybe these things do still pop up (and please let me know if they do!) but it just feels like that era of game design is gone, at least in the bigger triple A sphere. Anyway, Posy this video was excellent! This game looks like something I would have a gotten a real kick out of back when I used to game on a Pentium 2 in my basement. Granted that computer could just barely play Sim City 3000 so I'm not sure this game would have worked lol.

This game looks genuinely impressive for a late 90's game, especially the car physics (compared to similar games like Midtown Madness and Carmageddon), surprised I haven't heard of it before. Like a hidden gem that was under-marketed by the publisher probably. Don't think I've seen any game that gives so many real rewards for finding easter eggs either.

I feel like there's a potentially interesting way to structure a game by encouraging people to stop racing and seek out parts of the environment that have cheats and/or upgrades hidden there. Have the game start out like a regular racing game, then you encounter an opponent who is doing things you've never seen other racers do and you're knocked back to the beginning with a message telling you to meet someone in a secret area to kick off the Easter egg hunt and power yourself up, with each upgrade making it easier to make your way around until you get to the point where you can face off against the cheater and unlock the final act, where you are expected to race them one on one through a series of challenges that involve using the cheat codes to navigate through obstacle courses.

This video was more of a personal connection for me than an artistic "Posy" experience. It reminded me of games on the playstation 1 and 2 like twisted metal, need for speed, midnight club, and less similar racing games. I remember spending overtime on these games, finding the secrets, playing around (after i considered the game complete) like it's a sandbox rather than whatever the game design was. I remember how rewarding it was to find things you hadn't seen before, to wonder about what was behind strange, out of place textures/geometries, only to find out it's nothing..... But sometimes, it was a SECRET

Great video. Felt STRONG second-hand nostalgia from this (played similar PC racing games from that era).

Probably one of the most hair-raising countdown sound effects I've ever heard in a racer. It's perfect for this post-nuclear disaster racing title!

These Devs said (I think in the readme), that they used Neural Networks to Train the AI to drive the cars. And I have to agree, they react smoothly to any interference with them. Might be the historic first! Took more than 2 decades, and we slowly see neural Network based AI being used in games. Also the timewarp cheat was even more fun when ramming slowed enemies, and then turning it off, causing them to fly of at very high speeds. Also the Gog version, while being great for running at all, has a bug with texture quality in same areas, which can been in e.g. on the pipe on the urban truck (as you showed later). I tried different driver-, nglide- and game settings, but I could not remove it. I would love to see more such high quality reviews from you.

This gives me such nostalgia. I too got the demo and drove those elevated tracks to find the first cheat. Instead of looking for more, I just opened the .exe in notepad2 and searched for the text, to reveal a section of the file containing all the cheats. You're making me really want to get this game now.

When the Hifi, Tech, printing, car brochure nerd channel just drops a gaming video of a 90s racing title I never played and actually manages to make me want to play the darn thing...

When I was a kid I played the hell out of the demo of World of Outlaws Sprintcars, I had discovered the game through some shareware CD, that's why the physics on this game felt pretty close to that game (same developer obv). World of Outlaws had more compact tracks full of barriers but I still explored them a lot, I still remember that one time I glitched out of the first track and then fell into the void. I should still have that video recorded on a digicam pointing my screen. Never managed to do that again no matter how many times I tried, even to this day. Good Memories and great video Posy ❤

I think I just stumbled into a piece of media made specifically for me. An fun and informative high-quality video that covers a post-apocalyptic late 90's racing offroad racing game with a cancelled sequel? With a properly detailed description too???!! This fills all my really weirdly specific niches!! This is the best thing to happen to me since I started growing hair!! Seriously though, this was a really fun watch, its cool to see something like this where someone shares a piece of media they're passionate about and creates something cool and memorable out of it. I think I'll give this game a try sometime, maybe see if I can get the multiplayer up and running and do a LAN jam with friends. Thanks for making this.
