Collecting older games second hand used to be one of my favorite aspects of gaming, but with how the prices from online sellers have spiraled out of control the past couple years, my enthusiasm for it has been almost completely drained and I've felt priced out on even a lot of fairly commonplace older titles.

I can tell you: the time VC was new on Wii, the prices for physical retro games did rise, not fall. Reason: many ppl saw the old games on Wii and besides playing them, they wanted a physical copy from it. So more and more ppl without knowledge how much a game is worth, just buy and buy and for that reason the prices go higher. Even for common games everyone "should" already have. And it's not just that only younger ppl starting collecting videogames, there also some 30+ year olds just starting now, also because "it's worth something" otherwise most ppl would not even care about videogames.

And I have to agree with you on the packaging quality from Japanese sellers. It’s super crazy how expensive retro gaming is. I know some people can’t always go to a brick and mortar store but I always find going to actual stores that have those games for fair prices. It definitely depends on where you live as I know some people don’t have access to them but if you can find a gaming store, chances are likely that they’ll have fair pricing or even cheaper.

Well yeah, most of the games that are rare and expensive in the US saw a less popular and very limited release in the US and Europe. Meanwhile they were mass produced and marketed very well in Japan, meaning now you can easily find a japan copy. Pair that with the fact that anyone who only speaks english, german or spanish wont be able to actually read the games means higher supply and lesser demand.
@SolidStrike
@SolidStrike 2 жыл бұрын
I can tell you 3 reasons why that is: 1) Japan doesn't have as many die-hard video game hobbyists/collectors as the west does. 2) Collecting video games is looked down upon as it is part of the broader otaku culture and seen as counter-productive / a waste of money and or time. Collecting and building Gunpla figures on the other hand is viewed as a form of art, and is generally approached with a positive attitude. Some sort of double-standard going on there. 3) Akihabara (Japan's electronics district) has many many video game stores-- both new and retro, which have bins upon bins filled with video games that are still in their original packaging. Since there is a surplus of supplies, market prices for those games have stayed affordable for the most part. TL;DR too many otakus/scalpers here in the West driving the prices up insanely high.

@@HaohmaruHL I didn’t say there isn’t a market for it at all, rather that it is smaller than the American market. This is a fact. If the prices aren’t as high, it means that the market isn’t as big. Nothing wrong with it. Many Japanese do not have the space for large collections of old stuff, so they sell it and buy the new stuff. Americans typically have way more stuff. Coupled with the fact that Europeans will buy American retro games due to problems with PAL, and that is a recipe for American games being most highly desired.

The music makes me want to play Pilotwings Resort. But to get back on topic, I sold most of my game collection a few years ago. The prices are way too high, and I don't have that much time to play since I became a dad. I was blown away by the price some game were sold. I like playing on original hardware and all, but to really do these game justice you need a CRT TV, so at the end of the day, when I want to play some retro games I try to get a digital copy which are expensive for what they are, but are always more affordable. And in last resort emulation, which work really well these days. You can even set CRT filters or Gameboy filters via shades on Retro Arch and probably other emulators as well. And it looks fantastic. This week I've replayed Super Metroid on the Switch Snes app, and I had a blast with it. There's no way I would have bought it for 200€ for a shitty PAL 50Hz version.

As for me: The only retro system I collect for at the moment, is Classic Game Boy. All but one of the games is the American version. I managed to hit it at the right time and get most of them for as cheap as possible. I didn't care whether or not the cartridge was yellowed as long as the label was in decent shape and the board worked. I even got one with a dead save battery and fixed it. The one game I have so far that is from another country, is Fatal Fury 2, which was only released in Japan last I checked, and was less expensive than King of Fighters. I should probably point out, that with the exception of Tetris, all the games were purchased over a year ago.

I love my SNES mini and games like the Mana series on Switch because I can play the classic games without having to order possibly broken or damaged second hand copies. One area where I have started importing games is with Asia English games on Switch. Games like Legend of Mana, Saga Frontier, Final Fantasy IX etc. These games were fully translated into English (even the box) but were not released here in America but were released in the Asia region (which I believe refers Sinapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan etc. but not Japan or Korea) so I've been importing those. I also got into the Super Robot Wars games through importing of Asia English games.

I got a Japanese Wii and Fire Emblem Path of Radiance on my last trip to Japan a few years back for just under $100 total Canadian. And F-Zero GX a couple months back for just $15! It’s crazy how GameCube games shoot up in price, but generally are much cheaper in Japan. As a collector of Fire Emblem, I finished my physical collection this year. The only exception in Fire Emblem however, is that Thracia 776 is quite expensive. There are less copies compared to the other games in the series and there are a few different ways it was sold, one being the “Nintendo Power Flash Cartridge System” where the front of the cartridge and box was a plain box art not relating to the game. It’s the cheapest, but I went for a later release that has the box art and a standard cartridge for about $200. There is also a special edition that released which I really wanted, but it’s quite rare and prices go over $500+.

I'd love to see a video on getting Japanese consoles to run in the UK. Always been confused about that, despite having been a 'collector' for nearly 20 years! Also, when it comes to PAL games, some are optimised for 50hz to run/sound the same. However, some aren't at all so they run slower. If you play a 50hz optimised game on a PAL 60hz modded console they would run too fast or be glitchy (DKC and Super Mario World on SNES come to mind), so it's a bit of a lottery!!

Not really far where I live, there´s a shop that sells old, second-hand videogames for like 40-50 dollars. I got Sonic Heroes, Mario Party 6 and Wario World for my Wii, for like, 120 in total. In other places, with 120 you only get to buy one of them. Heck, maybe even one of them.

I thought about getting import Hardware for Famicom, Super Famicom, and Mega Drive but decided on going with the Analogue Consoles instead. The Super NT, Mega SG, and Analogue Nior Mini. Future proof and region free. Awesome visual quality as well but the price tag is hefty. I just figured I would use the money that I was holding for a PS5 on those because the whole PS5 situation is a complete debacle.

I'm living in Japan and the other day I walked in a store and saw multiple copies of Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn, CiB for about $20 each. There's exceptions here and there but generally speaking yes, it's much easier to find retro/older games at reasonable prices even fully complete.

My first/only times playing the original Wario Land trilogy was via the Japanese versions. Aside from some tiny confusion surrounding the treasure minigames, I had an amazing time with them. And I managed to get all three cartridges for less than the average going price of *one* English cartridge. I say just go for it.

I grew up with the Japanese version of Wario Land 2. Got stuck on the level "Defeat Four Ducks", due to not being able to read the level objective. But hey, the Penguins threw actual beer 🍺 bottles, instead of black ⚫ balls.

In order to play Japanese famicom carts you don't need to buy a Japanese console you can easily buy an adapter like my arcade in order to play on your American NES. However my arcade only accept standard famicom cart if you purchase Splatterhouse wapaku graffiti it will not fit because of the unusual tall size of the cart. Also you can purchase a Retron 5 to make it much easier as well especially if you want to put English patches on some RPG game like Mother 2. As for pricing is really depending not all famicom games are cheap especially shipping and takes a long time to deliver.

Buying retro games directly in Japan is super cheap! A few years ago I went into a mom and pop shop and bought all of the pokemon versions for gen 1 and 2 for under 10 dollars, no box but they all looked brand new!

It really is sick how cheap games in Japan are in comparison. When I had my exchange semester over there I bought so much gaming books and games for low prizes. Though, newer used games (e.g.3DS, Switch) can be at least as expensive as here in Germany so I guess it really just goes for retro stuff. I speak Japanese and often think about selling my Pal versions and rebuying games in/from Japan, too. ^^ And yeah, "used" in Japan always feels to me like "in almost new condition", even for most books and the like.

If you like playing on original hardware, repro carts are the way to go unless it’s one of your favorite games and you want to have an authentic copy.

Maybe I'm wrong about this but I think certain games would give me a hard time selecting options in Japanese. I think this would be particularly bad in RPGs like final fantasy.

The absurd prices are also why emulation is often favored. Legal or not, I don't have huge surpluses of money or space to reserve for retro games. And if I sit on the sidelines while everyone else has fun, I'll never leave the sidelines.

Was living in Japan 2 years ago and i've never seen so many Final Fantasy games in my life every time i went into a Hard Off, Book Off, or Retro store. you could build a coffee table out of them all ....(100 yen a piece = $1). Also if you're a CD collector they keep their stuff in immaculate condition so you could get so much music for $1- $3 a pop.

I think the way cheaper prices in Japan overall relate to the fact that english-speaking people cannot easily play them, hence the difference in demand and value.
