Man, these days I feel like I'm addicted to watching people talk about games. I don't start a new game bcos "I don't have time", yet spend as much time watching the damn videos - makes no sense. I hear ya on the collecting front though, Switch and PS4 are the last consoles I'm "collecting" for. I have enough good games in my backlog to see me out. I'll never forget my dad's guiding principle: do you own the video game or does the video game own you? That's saved me so much hassle.

I am addicted to tech and gaming in such a huge way. These last couple years I have been buying retro systems and games. I am afraid I missed out on so much. It makes me super happy to have the games and consoles and a couple PCs. I am really bad about back catalogue, BUT I will say I never used to finish games much until around 2020. Now I try to finish everything I start playing. Video Games and Tech just bring me so much joy, I get super excited to talk about it with people.

I keep buying retro consoles even though I don't really need them. I'm addicted to collecting roms and building my retro collection.......but I rarely play any of them. I spend the vast majority of my time collecting but not playing.

To be honest --- if you don't mind me saying --- you're trying to fulfill an emptiness---- I have the same problem.

I had emotional collecting habits. Notably physical music, mostly vinyls. It wasn't until recently I stopped to consider, "why am I spending hundreds on mint limited records I'll never open?" I ended up selling the records that were essentially decorations and now only buy CD's, cassette's, vinyls that I intend to listen to. There was a mention of, "if it doesn't bring you joy, get rid of it" and I totally agree with that. Unless you're rich, you probably have limited space to work with and storage rental costs are getting wild.

I am like that with vintage systems, and was like that with the mini consoles. one reason I thought about selling my collection to remove the stress.

I've had to start my collection over from scratch a few different times due to circumstances in life. Every time I've started over, I've approached it differently but, I remember in the early days it was a feeling of having to have everything. The most recent refresh of my collecting habits is working out the best for me nowadays. PS1 is my favorite system so I'm just focusing on my favorite genre, RPGs. The other systems I collect for, I only pick up good deals and games that mattered to me when I was younger.

The FOMO is real. And you gotta fight it every day! If I wasn't such a neat-freak, I'd probably be drowning in useless video game merch. Not a fan of leaving things sealed or in shipping boxes. Stuff has to get used or go on a shelf somewhere. And there's only a limited time and space to actually "live" in, so sometimes I just skip buying things. I try to stick to the things I really love, and things I know I'm going to use, and I've been much happier.

I've been "collecting" games for 41 years. I didn't really refer to it as a collection until around 2000. What is different about buying, and not selling games, than say, buying your favorite movies on disc, or filling bookshelves with books? It's mostly the same IMO. I personally wouldn't try to collect every game for a system, as I wouldn't want to surround myself with stuff In don't care about, but I do like having all of my favorite games, most of which, I purchased at the time they were new. (At least, from the ColecoVision, to the PS5).

I've been this way with everything my whole life. Not just with video games. Not FOMO but having extra things just in case. TVs, CD players, computers, etc....I even go as far to have two vehicles at all times just in case. Then I can drive one while fixing the other.

I can totally relate to this. For me, it's not as bad or servere in the point it comes close to hurt my financial health as I try to keep my collection 'small and sober'... but yeah... I'm definitelly buying things I don't need to fulfill some stupid need my mind brings up from the middle of nowhere and most of them aren't even touched. I've slowed down a bit this year and plan to slow down even more.

That's the kind of behaviour you develop because of something growing up. Like your parents turning your console into a holy relic you had to only touch with gloved hands on a Saturday when your homework was done.

Man this hit home. I’m actually trying to offload a bunch of stuff I’ve purchased over the years due to FOMO and get organized with the collections I actually use.

For my collection, I've developed a set of rules that I strictly adhere to: - I only buy a game if I truly want it - When I am on a hunt, I will not spend over $100 on any game - Get consoles and games repaired or upgraded as needed (New batteries, better screens for really old portables etc...) - If I do not buy a game and it is not there when I get back, I simply tell myself it was not meant for me With all that said, I also develop and I purchase some games not just for the collection but also as research for genre studies when I am trying to broaden my range on different approaches to development. One day, I am also looking to pass down my collection as well. A part of my job also involves teaching animation and game development and I personally do not think it is crazy to want to pass that physical media onto someone else who will appreciate it and continue the tradition in one way or another as the future of gaming is still not as cut and dry and most may think. I look at a collection as a library of knowledge. But at the end of the day, I have to have fun with what I enjoy. Like any other gamer, I have a back catalog and I have a couple of ways of dealing with this: - I put a lot of my actual collection onto an emulation portable so I can play some games during a lunch break. - I pull out at least an hour when I am not busy to stream games from my collection when I am at home and not working. My streams are just local to friends and family and I really do it just for fun and to share thoughts on whatever I am playing. Despite my love for games, I never let it take control of the important stuff (family, life etc...). However, I definitely share this stuff with family and friends when I have company over. Also, I do have some duplicates in my collection mainly from my younger years. I don't really do this too much anymore but may double dip on occasion if I really like something (but definitely not with everything). Of I have multiple consoles of the same type, they are usually variants or a new model. It's also very rare that I ever pre-order these days. I take my time with purchases and hunts. I'm not the type that needs every game. But when I want something, I get it if it's available. Bottom line, there is not enough time to play everything so I like to focus more on what I feel like playing. So trends and fear of loss don't affect me as much as it did in my 20s. At the end of the day, find a flow that works for you and actually follow it

Good stuff man! I've had a bad habit of collecting things I don't need that doesn't get used. I've gradually sold off stuff by reminding myself that it may bring someone else more enjoyment to have it rather than sitting there going unused.

We had a point system at my job and the funny thing about it is they never really kept track of the points of the people that they liked, only the people they were trying to get rid of, such as the people who constantly called off on Fridays or every other Friday, or tried to be slick and take of the Monday instead of their typical Friday (you know, so they could enjoy their 3-day weekend) or had a bad attitude, or bad job performance. If you showed up on time and did your job, they really didn't care if you took off a day here and there.

Controlling fomo is something every collector should master but it's so damn hard. Plus I don't think a lot of people realize how much work it is to downsize once you have a large collection.

I traded over 300 dollars worth of games for a Nintendo Switch because I was getting claustrophobic and learned a massive lesson buying only what I will play after collecting for over a decade.

I think for me it has more to do with how easy it is to spend money than it does for my collecting. Your card info is saved, companies are offering same as cash financing, you can get it next day. Combine with the "limited" availability of stuff and suddenly you got a ton of stuff you don't even want. I've been purging my collection over the past couple years. If it's been in my closet for over a year, it's time to get rid of it. On top of that I've started just waiting a day or two before buying something and that FOMO wears off. If I still want it in a couple of days I go and get it. It's wild to have money left over for the next paycheck and paying down my credit cards. Like wow, that's how much money I've been putting on my shelf each month.

With the way technology works today even in the retro gaming community you are more likely to have a device ship broken(bad firmware/unfinished/flawed) so now you have 4 broken pieces of equipment. You cannot think this way.

I was once shamed for having shelves of video games, by a person who collected beer cans... He had walls of them! Can you imagine? At least I can play my games. What do you do with hundreds of beer cans? :P Though, I had no problem with him collecting those. Whatever makes you happy. That is what you should do. If you like being surrounded by things that remind you of what you love...then I think you should do that.

Collector burnout is real. Eventually you come to the realization that you're dropping a whole lotta money on an idea and not something practical or that will significantly benefit you in any way other than making your shelves look pretty. For some people, I guess that's all they need. But time and space are finite, and I'd rather be collecting things I can actively appreciate and not a massive collection that will just sit around and be forgotten outside of a couple moments.

Great video. I've been selling off parts of my collection lately and it's been liberating. I literally don't remember what I've sold so far, and that confirms that those games and items really didn't matter to me. I just keep my absolute favorites and go from there. Now if only I could sell off parts of my Steam library, hah :D

Kudos for making a video on this, you highlight mental health addiction perfectly and in a first hand, clear concise way. Those folks affected will never believe they have a mental health issue yet is a psychological problem for them to not buy the next thing they 'need'. Think about it.... Collection of stuff is fine provided its kept in check, I stopped collecting games on 2020 and slimmed down my existing collection to less than 800 games from almost twice that. I feel better for appreciating and playing the games I got over looking for more to add to my backlog. On a note i do see getting a back-up of a system kind of relevant especially the older disc based systems. 😎✌️ Cool topic

If you're into retro consoles and are serious about only using original hardware, there is *some* merit to buying backups - some of these consoles are pushing 40 years old, after all. I've had two SNES units have chips fail, and one where the center AC pylon snapped off (apparently a somewhat common issue, and it was on a SNES Jr. so it's almost impossible to find an aftermarket replacement). Don't get me started on dead lasers; I have a small collection from repairing Saturn and PS1 units and I've graded and stored them on a scale of "surprisngly functional" to "basically dead". I keep them in a tote, wrapped in protective paper so I have some spares as needed. If an ODE exists for a CD based console, I have at least one on hand for actually playing those games on the original hardware without killing another laser. You just have to make sure you do it in moderation - I have gone a little crazy with spares in the past, especially if I had a streak of bad luck with a particular console.

I was like this as well. Until one day I was like "You know what. I just want a collection I know I'll play." So, I condensed my collection. I went from system to system and wrote a list of games I know I'll play. I kept the ones I do play, and I'm kind of waiting for a time to sell the rest. Sure, some systems have a large list, like NES, however majority of the games I would LOVE to own are too expensive, so the barrier there is already made, thus my collection is a lot smaller.

Good topic. There are many files, folders and formats... From cards , flashlights, guns and knifes to video games.. I have one thing in 'my cart', but I have to rid of a couple items before I 'check out'. Even letting go of items takes time too. Enjoy the simple things man, much love

Totally agree. Collect the things you love not just to be a completist. I absolutely despise the videos that show people buying ever game on a system JUST to complete the collection, especially when they are just by junk ass copies and spending WAY too much money. I collect a ton of different things, CDs tapes vinyl movies books games toys plants art etc, but they are all items that I actually use, display, touch, draw, enjoy, etc. I do NOT buy games that SUCK or games that don‘t interest me. I love to collect variants of certain items and expand collections that really bring me joy. My only downfall is I don‘t spend enough time directly playing or reading everything. But I know eventually I will! Hopefully before I die! 😂 I‘ve never been addicted to gaming and play them randomly. I listen to all my music items, I read as many of my books as I can and I try to engage with my other items as much as possible. I purge items from my collection all the time. I had tons of StarWars that I‘ve gotten rid of over the years because I lost interest in certain pieces but kept other pieces that still made me smile. Right on dude!

Yup. I limit myself to one shelf. ONE. It takes up a whole wall but that's it. Books, movies, games, music, it all goes on that one shelf. EDIT: I have tens of thousands of ROMs, books, movies, and music backed up...data hording is a thing too. 😞

It's not your fault or his fault. Everything is limited edition or limited time only, or really hard to get. If your analogue whatever dies, you'll never ever get another one. The industry created this behavior.

I'm a recovering addict who just switched out my addictions from drugs and alcohol to other things. I recently purged a bunch of games and got my collecting under control. It just happened so fast.

Scarcity vs abundance mindset.

I don't even play games anymore, I just watch to see how gaming continues to evolve. But yeah, OCD sucks. I collect composition books, and pens. I rarely use pens except to jot a note on scrap paper, and I have stacks of composition books still bare.

I am convinced everyone in retro games go through this cycle in some form now. At least for me it was a cycle, and hard to find a balance. Getting way too much stuff for no reason, being downtrodden in life from other events, and purging nearly all of it, then feeling the spark of interest in hobbies again and starting up again. Figuring out your own limits and goals is really important in my opinion. Gotta let fun drive the hobby, not fear, anxiety, or duct taping emotions. Easier said than done, but that's the point! Reflect on it and try to figure yourself out. The other point I want to make is just one about having spares, FOMO, etc. For most people, I bet if you just buy things when you need/want to play them you'll spend less money. You might spend more on an individual item here or there, but there are also cases where you didn't need the extra, or could've gotten the item cheaper/a better version later if you waited. I think we remember being burned/feeling regret and fight hard to prevent that happening again. Not that you have to live strictly by only getting something when you want to play it or anything either. I think it's fine to enjoy getting some things sometimes just because, but again just find a balance. Be kind to yourself- you don't have deny yourself everything, but drowning yourself in stuff can become its own burden too. Different answer for everyone, it probably shifts throughout life, and you may never nail the balance perfectly but that's alright too.

I definitely feel this. I have the dreaded OCD/FOMO personality combo, so I have fallen victim to this more than I would like to admit. Part of it is because I have gotten rid of stuff in the past that I later regretted and had to repurchase it at a higher price later. I have limited money and space though, so I'm trying to get better at it. Funny enough, I recently bought 2 Miyoo A30s just because I was unsure if I was going to get the one I had preordered, and they were dirt cheap during an AliExpress sale. One of them did end up breaking (cracked screen) after a few days, so having the second one paid off in this instance. But usually I only buy two of something if I think I can flip the second one to pay for the first one (I built a lot of my collection on the cheap this way). This is getting a lot harder to do with the current state of the economy, though, so I rarely do that anymore.

Controllers I understand. The QC isn’t the same as it used to be, nor are the parts or quality materials. Bought the PS5 2.5-3 years ago now and just this week the Left Stick started Drifting. Called Sony and its out of Warranty. Luckily I had a back up if not I’d have to go and buy another controller. Imagine if we were 15-20 years in the future and they’re off the shelves and no longer readily available.

I was like that until quite recently. I’m glad I got to the point it is a healthy hobby and not burdening credit card debt.

Thats where I fear how complex things are getting, were seeing far fewer parts that can be replaced, pet alone be an easy replacement. My N3DS XL has a broken B button, wish I had spare parts but its hard to find something I feel I can trust buying. Would be nice to have an official store that sells replacement parts and guides but for the average person we are clueless on what process will get something reliably fixed that will stay fixed for years.

Collecting was fun when things were plentiful and cheap. Emulation back in those days wasn't what it is now. As emulation has come into its own I have ceased collecting for consoles that are well emulated. I still have all of my physical games, but I don't hunt for retro games below the 7th gen. My PS2 has FreeMCboot, my Wii is hacked, I have everything I want for my XBOX physically. I have a large PS3 collection and a small 360 collection because there's not much I wanted for it. I never sold anything but I don't keep adding. It's a pointless expense and I have more than enough games to play. That's minus my Steam and GOG libraries. Most of the space in man cave is taken up by my two sound systems because I hate playing games with weak sound. So if I get rid of alot of my games I won't actually gain that much space.

@Madlittlepixel- with regards to Ad revenue, I remember watching a video where they state making your video's a minimum 10 mins long will produce the best Ad generation for a given time frame. Don't know how longer video's scale, they didn't mention that

Really liked this video reminded me of a story I'd like to share with you. So I work in an auto parts store, & my job is to dispatch drivers to deliver parts to mechanics. I had 1 driver who was constantly late to work, & I mean like 2-3 Hours late plus on top of that he smelled HORRIBLE, I mean REALLY bad hygiene. I asked him why he was late all the time, & it was because he was playing video games with his friends till 4 or 5am and he'd have to be in by 8am or 9am. So boss got sick of it, & finally gave him a last, & final warning if your late once more your fired. He was doing good for a few weeks then BAM 3 hours late walks in like nothing clocks in, & that point boss just told him "clock out, your done!" He REALLY thought the boss was joking but nope you are fired. See I myself love playing games with friends too but when work is involved I call it quits by midnight. Kinda glad they fired this guy too as my boss assigned me to be the guy to talk to him about his hygiene, this guy stunk so bad I had mechanics beg me not to send him as the parts driver, & again because of playing games so addictively he would just never bathe. I have medically diagnosed ocd, it’s horrid. Luckily it doesn’t really factor into my gaming and I use gaming as a bit of a distraction from it. That said, I have occasionally bought multiples of games before to keep one sealed and other stupid stuff, particularly falling for ltd edition fomo.

For me and many others it was World of Warcraft in the early days (2004-2007 ish). It completely dominated my life and ruined relationships, grades, job opportunities, etc. At the same time I have really good memories from the game.

No collector here, I only have what I play and really enjoyed , I sell 90% of my software..I only keep my puzzle gamez because we still replay them.

I don't have a fomo. Mine is more of a keeping up with the Jones' as well as hoarding. I watch a lot of pick up videos and I thought I could do it. My collection has a lot of unnecessary games and systems that I will never want to play. And since I keep getting more it just makes it that much harder to test and get gone.

People need to understand that especially the retro scene plays upon your/our fears to generate significantly more revenue they suffocate production or hoard the supply of a particular game to increase the price which creates artificial demand and the sad part is it usually works

I collect only video games I want to play. For example, I just picked up Diablo 4 for $19.99 from Game Stop. I collect with the mentality of one day being able to play all of my games, maybe after retirement lol

mate this obsession has been with me with FOMO on games, this year i have finally cut it down. I was never able really to afford games, and ever since covid that I had the income to do so, it was feeling spendy and kept buying physical games for consoles when I 90% play on PC or Switch. My wallet is happy again.

I feel the same way that "less is more" even for things that aren't physical collections wether it's on my Phone or PC I like to just go through everything and start deleting things that no longer suit who I am as a person or that I just don't have a use for anymore. Even when it comes to games that I got off a drive off of Amazon I don't need every single game that came with it so I need to go through and delete all the ones that I don't care about but there's just so many that I've never played before so idk where to even begin with those that's going to take awhile to find out which ones I like to play and which ones I don't. Also my childhood gamecube and wii collections I look at a lot of games in my shelf like Tonka rescue patrol or american idol that I know I'm never going to play but I still have them on the shelf but idk they don't take up that much extra space considering so those don't bother me too much.

I'm able to repair almost anything myself, and yet I still have the same issue when it comes to things I can't get spares for. Then I'll buy multiple items only to ever use one of them. 😅 That can get a little messy in my brain when color variations come into play. Then it can take days for me to make a reasonable decision. That's probably why I own 11 GameCube controller while only having two hands. But at least I won't buy games that I don't want to play, just for having them or reaching a certain goal. If it's a stinker, I don't have room for it. Don't own any Pokemon stuff as an example just because it might be rare or whatever. If a console comes with games I don't want, I just sell them.

I totally get this. I think my midlife crisis has been buying all the games/consoles I had as a kid. I started collecting like 20 years ago, paused for like 10 to 15 years as everything was in boxes due to space restrictions living in a row home w my wife, and now I have so much stuff that I really don't play/use. It's tough though. I feel nostalgic for the Atari 2600, N64, GameCube, and others but I never break em out. Although I no longer live in a row home I don't have a setup where I can have everything connected all the time and as an adult, who has the time or energy to even really play all of it anyway.

This is the main reason I got back into emulation. At one point I was drowning in spare hardware and unplayed games. These days I actually play more games than when I had 4 backwards compatible ps3s.

I agree with this and find it relatable. Not really retro or even physical media, but when there’s something like a steam sale or some other digital sale with steep discounts, I feel like I need to purchase alot of these games because “I have to get it before the sale goes away” and then I end up with hundreds of steam games in my library that I’ve never played and hundreds or for some people probably thousands of dollars gone because of that FOMO

Yeah I feel this. I have been buying thousands of dollars of games every year for the last 4 years. Price Chart says my physical game collection is worth over 20K and I have over 2000 games in my Steam library. Am I ever going to play everything, I know I'm not. I just can't pass up NISA Collectors editions and if there is a good deal on a game. I have a whole room with games I have to buy another shelf unit because I have stacks laying on the floor. Don't be like me people lol.

OMG!!!! OK so for over 15 years I have been collecting PC, retro video games and Console Video Games and have over 90,000 games spanning about 40 systems ( that's roms and digital games mind you, im NOT bank of America! ) anyway that's my addiction but this is the worst part of this mad story, I WANT MORE and cant stop. I also have what can only be called a sickness, where i actually haven't played any of them and spend hours and hours and hours scrolling though games and ending up NOT playing anything. Yes, there's an occasional Donkey Kong or frogger or Tron or a star wars game here or there but i know in my deranged mind that i will never play a fraction of these games EVER!! I had 7 consoles and realised they were sat collecting dust and not getting played. I sold 2 of them and felt glad, I didn't even sell them for a great price I was just glad I downsized abit. I am still debating to sell my PS3 and games. I have an Xbox 360 and games so it seems pointless to have both. A lot of the games I have played already and completed or at least near completed. I just end up with a collection of stuff.

I had a AVS and a near mint condition NES but I still purchased a RGB NES front loader on shop and have no regrets doing so but it's important to remember that video games are a want not a need and that applies to any amount on either side of a extreme whether your a mass collector or a minimalist it's still a want not a need so I'd say do you and enjoy life.

Sold my video game horde before covid. Got to a point it went from bringing me joy to it bringing me down.

I had this weird notion that I should keep the few amiibo I have sealed, thing is don't like the way they look in the packaging. So, I had them hidden behind other stuff in my collection. I recently opened all of them and now have them displayed. Just was an OCD thing of getting caught up in the value of something to the point of not enjoying its intended purpose.

I do this with CRT’s because I fear in 10 years they will be hard to come by or really expensive (they are getting up there now) so every so often when I see a “new old stock” one on eBay I’ll pick it up, check it works once and then store it for spares - literally I have about 8-9 backups now, most factory new. I’m 40 years old next year and I’m thinking will I really live the time it takes for all those CRT’s to die 😂 I’ve been using the same one for 6 years with no issue. I know when that one does bite the dust and I have to take one out of storage, I’ll panic buy 3 others “Just in case”.

I try to keep retro purchases reasonable, nothing more pricey than a modern game, and generally ONLY games I want badly like Paper Mario 64 which I got in June '24, I have a Saturn but I refuse to ridiculous amounts for Street Fighter Zero 3 on Saturn, or hundreds on North American Saturn games, especially since discs can get scratched and you wasted a large amount of money...I'm a cheapskate...probably not a good hobby for a cheapskate, but most of my Nintendo 64 games I got were gotten years ago, and I can find fun games for cheap, I'm also at the point where I refuse to get any more consoles, only console I plan on getting is the Switch 2, other than that I'm done because there's only so much physical space for all this stuff! I know I'm missing out on good consoles like the Sega Dreamcast, or the Turbografx 16/PC Engine, but I don't have space or inputs for them, and I don't want to pay the high prices for their games. I feel like the Saturn is on the fringes of those more obscure consoles where everything is expensive except Saturn was actually good and not a media player first and Saturn at least has reasonably priced games, especially if you import them from Japan.

Change out video games for board games and this was me to a tee. It took me years to get over the addiction of acquisition.

I like having multiple good controllers, especially with all these nice wireless controllers for retro consoles that are coming out.

I got broken into and now i have extra handhelds just in case i get robbed.

haha i am exactly the same. Not long ago sold my 200 N64 games because they just sat there doing nothing. I was buying them just for them to sit on the shelf.
