Ironically enough my first time playing this game was in an arcade in Daytona Beach FL

Model boards were... alien technology. Bear in mind Daytona USA came out in FUCKING 1993. Most of us were playing Snes, Megadrive and some probably still with the NES... and then you went to the arcades and saw Daytona USA, full textured polygons, 60fps, 8 player cabinets and fuck me in the ass AM2.

There is 8 years between Daytona USA on model 2 and the dreamcast game. Yet the gap visually between them isn't absolutely massive. It's obvious but not as much as one would imagine. The main benefit of the dreamcast is the extra RAM. Still, although it was 8 years between the games, a model 2 system in 1993 cost nearly 100 times what a dreamcast console did when it launched. That is progress. I still prefer the arcade original though...

Dreamcast is a lil beast of a system. Still playing it, still lovin it. I had sturmwind pre purchased for a year and a half and it's so good i can pretty much say it was worth the wait. SEGA!!!

Fun fact: The model 2 board, as well as the model 3 board later, couldn't actually do true transparencies (for things like shadows or windows, for example). Any semi-transparent objects were actually polygons with small holes (essentially an binary value rather than a float value) that, seen from a distance (and in fast motion in the case of Daytona), looked like actual semi transparent objects. The same was done with the Sega Saturn's hardware. Other alternative to that technique was to switch black polygons, representing an object's shadow, on and off quickly which, to the viewer, looked like a semi transparent object. It wasn't until the Dreamcast that Sega had a graphics board that was capable of true transparencies.

I don't care what anyone says, the original Saturn version was a great racing game, it suffered from being a launch title so was no doubt rushed and as a launch title was also the 1st time that team of devs had developed a game on that hardware.

Thank you so much for this, ive been wanting to see something like this for a long time. I appreciate the first saturn version more now. They were really trying for arcade perfect. (If only could see a ps version for a saturn vs ps comparison hahaha) The second saturn versions draw in is greatly increased. The DC version had a good chance to be the definite home version but screwed it up with controls and the shape of the car, which is the defining thing of Daytona. Along with the shape of rough polys of the wheels. Had to wait until the psn/xbox live version to have it perfect. Only what? 18 years for arcade perfect LOL

The arcade has some weird temperamental, almost scripted gameplay which is cryptic and amazing. The car does something different everytime, depending on the track section. The only version that reproduces that characteristic gameplay is the original Saturn version. Not even the Daytona 2 arcade could recapture the same gameplay style

Call me crazy but the original Saturn version is the most fun conversion to play.

Daytona USA 2001 on Dreamcast is actually a Daytona remake according to the developers. so the gameplay is very different and looks very different. it's a love it or hate it affair. Me I love the Dreamcast version.

Of course DC was gonna crush everything else...128-bit system brah.

I prefer the Model 2 version, for the classic music and graphics. The dreamcast version just looked to "glossy" for me. Its as if the developers were the kind of people who were easily distracted by shiny objects. Edit: Fixed grammar.

To be fair, the console was unlike others, so programmers had trouble with it. That was really the main factor which contributed to the Saturn's failure.

You should have included the psn/xbla release since its the definitive version of Daytona released to date. The saturn version is a serviceable port that gets the job done and Daytona USA 2001 on the dreamcast is the prettiest version to date with vga out :)

well they are all straight ports from model 2 really because they are all ports based off of the model 2 original game. The notable enhancements of the xbla/psn version are that its 1080p, arranged soundtrack option and online play available. Also you dont have to buy a full on daytona model 2 arcade system for perfect arcade play, now you can just play it perfectly in your home in hd

Maybe it's because I'm watching the video in 720p, but I'm actually blown away by how the graphics stack up. From my eyes, it appears that Saturn V1 is worst, Saturn Championship Circuit is just a pair of ticks behind Arcade, and Dreamcast beats out Arcade very narrowly. I'd only say DC has it ahead because it looks abit more colorful while the Arcade looks bleached. However, I like the Arcade's boxy look, reminds me of the 1991-1993 NASCAR Winston cup cars, which were my favorite body/nose/tail style. The rounded version on the Dreamcast looks more like the rounded, almost feminine version of the '93 cars that we saw in 1997-2000. Fitting, because the Arcade was made in 1993 and the DC was made in 2000.

Dreamcast and most recent Hd version have next to none draw distance issues and run smooth sails. Of course if you emulate Dreamcast ensure you got nothing too much running in the background on your computer and that you do have fairly decent hardware, just not a crappy cheap notebook or anything

its widescreen the psn/xbla is a port from the sega ringedge hardware of sega racing classic which is a port/re,ake of the original daytona.

car model graphics edge-Model 2 arcade,Sense of speed-Model 2 arcade,best environment graphics-Dreamcast version.Its a shame Dreamcast didn't just choose to wait few more months and make Daytona 2 instead of there hybrid but it was still a great port for damn sure.They did similar thing with Gauntlet sadly, amazing game,but Gamecube got dark legacy version and sega was gonna get that to before it was canceled.

The Saturn port was very decent, except for the awfully short rendering distance. The fact that the CCE version only slightly addressed this tells me it had more to do with hardware limitations than rushing the original port. Anyway this is one of the best racing games ever, no matter the version.

Arcade Daytona: perfection except for the pop-up Saturn Daytona was fun but a mess. Daytona CCE was ok, but still off Dreamcast Daytona was amazing, but i couldn't get over the controls.

Dreamcast for the win

Arcade still looks better. Dreamcast version looks great and smother polygons but its like someone rubed grease on the camera lens. The arcade version looks crisp while 2001 looks mushy for lack of a better term. They should have just gone for arcade perfect or was the dreamcast still not powerful enough to compete with AM2 hardware?

I don't think it was THAT bad, Could've been better but wasn't it a launch title? Also the Saturn just isn't capable of doin g arcade perfect model 2 graphics. Compromises always had to be made.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what version is better, it s whether you enjoyed the game. I'm 42 years old, I was lucky to play the game when it was new, but unfortunately, was sick at the time. In 1994, I came down with the a bad flu or something, don't know what it was, but yeah. I started playing Daytona properly around 1995 ish. Fast forward 21 years and have released it as Sega Classic Racing or something like that, for current use. They lost the daytona licensing. But the game sucks. If you can find an original daytona in the wild, go play it ASAP.

in my opinion the best home version is the xbox 360/ps3 version, the dreamcast version looks the best but its not the original daytona to me saturn version plays well but looks rough, cce well i think its the weakest port overall but i do like the music :-)
