Retro LAN - Preparing the Machines

I've been invited to bring along some retro computers to showcase at a big, modern LAN event happening soon in town. I jumped at the opportunity of course but there is work to be done! The machines all need some TLC so we'll go through each one and fix them up.

Ill be the guy finding ways using bots in the future to not only make A.I. texture upscales maximal quality without all the manual steps, but probably making tools, or upgrading present ones to really fill out the library so future generations wanting to go back in time have the ability to experience the OG presentation short the then impossible to find hardware, and the new ways. Imagine being able to emulate the performance of ancient chips down to bandwidth, memory walls, and approximately the general processing power of the architecture able to scale to newer machines. Then all you need is some CRT monitors, or extremely good digital fakes to keep the torch burning.

Awh, I wish I was there to go to the lan party! Seems like it's going to be an awesome time, specially with the retro section you're putting together there. Any of those machines would be a great retro gaming machine and them all together is a site to see. Great video, good luck on the event!

And Warcraft 2 shall be played…make sure you give them a ball mouse. Oh, also show the IIe with Carman Sandiago, number munchers, and Oregon Trail. 😀

Haha yes ball mice mandatory! And blue mouse pads! Warcraft 2 is definitely on the list to get running on these as well.

Love the vid and great content because it's rare to see the preparedness of Retro LAN computers and I have been there and done that but its all in goood fun LoL. I would briging the DELL up with some ram and hdd to somewhat match up the other two machines but just my preference LoL. Again Thank You and always enjoy watching your vids.

Thanks for watching! Yeah I did kick around the idea of boosting the Dell a bit. I haven't decided yet as I do like it being so "stock" so far! But putting in, say a P3 600 I think would really give it a jump too. Choices, choices...

this looks great and I would definitely attend any 'retro' LAN-parties if they were near me. But I do wonder what do you do at a modern LAN party if not play retro-games?

This is a pretty big LAN event and I think there is a lot of focus on modern shooters. They host tournaments but people play all sorts of games, it's a lot of fun! I of course play mostly retro so I'm hoping this leads to people being interested, in maybe a dedicated retro LAN in the future!

Those should work nicely for the event, and I'm sure you'll get lots of people talking and reminiscing. Are you bringing speakers too or just letting people plug in headphones in the back?

Yes definitely hoping to get some attention and maybe even interest to set up a dedicated retro LAN! As far as the sound... speakers aren't allowed due to there being so many people there. So guests at my machines will be treated to the finest audio pleasures that the cheapest, white, headphones Amazon can provide!

I was down on the end cap of D37-40. Next to the center area. It was fun with a lot of traffic passing by to check the machines out!

Is it hard to get the actual networking stuff set up? I have a few retro machines and I was to do a LAN with them, but I'm anticipating lots of problems and road blocks.

Actually it's not that bad at all! If you have machines on this era the quickest way is to install a PCI network card, set an IP address on the computer and connect them together via a switch. At that point they can talk together for LAN purposes but if you want to share files there are a few more steps. I'm planning a video soon on the topic as well!

Didn't set even home 2 computers friends only events for few years, so i feel jealous)) i see glorious crt there on a machine that cannot handle stable 125 fps in q3)) sorry, just a force of habbit.

Sadly never ended up making a video on it! Well... I had quite a bit of footage from the event but it ended up being so dark at the venue that most of my stuff would have to be artifically boosted so much, it would have looked terrible. I ended up making the decision to not make a video on it with that source material unfortunately!

Hah japp manga minnen! Hoppas att detta leder till ett lokalt retro-LAN pa riktigt om det finns intresse. Mycket jox att fa alla spelen att installera, uppdatera och spela ok. Men det ar kul! Dom kommer att fa uppleva ljudet genom dom finaste, men absolut billigaste, vita horlurarna som Amazon har! Inga hogtalare tillatna tyvarr!
