Clearing out a parents house. I discovered a whole bunch of stuff. Old physical media from many moons ago. Before 4k, Blu ray, DVD. I had VHS. When I cleared out they were handed out to relatives. Now, a time has come… they’ve come back to me. Here’s a look through some of the remaining relics.
Retro gold or just plain junk ?
Do you collect older formats ? If so, what do you still collect… and what do you use them for (display / actual use or just nostalgia) ?
Fire off in the comments, let’s discuss…

If they were Horror titles they'd be worth keeping. I think out of all genres it's the most sought after on retro media.

The nostalgia for sure is very cool going through them all. The temptation to want to keep some might just be that “collector” mindset inside all of us. Personally I don’t think VHS is worth keeping. The tapes deteriorate, and they are huge. Unless you can’t get it on any other form like dvd or bluray then for sure keep the VHS otherwise enjoy the nostalgia and move on. It’s so hard to learn it but I’ve finally trained myself to only collect what I will use/watch. Theres no point having hundreds or thousands of something just for the sake of having it. Curation is freedom. Letting go of something allows the opportunity for other collectors to to enjoy your things you no longer need.

I’ve started to try and train myself in that mindset. Still have slips but certainly managing to clear out more than I’m bringing in for now as I’m curating. It was nice revisiting these things and there was that slight temptation to display a couple but… zero interest in trying to borrow a played to actually give them a look. Most of what I had here were pretty standard releases. They’ll be going to the 80s video shop this weekend I think.

I love Sneakers. Great comedic heist/thriller. It is from the 90s though :) I remember when they talked about it on Bad Influence just because it has some tech in it.

I need to watch it again soon. I love watching older movies and being amazed at the some of the Tech that was considered cutting edge now looking massively ridiculous. Just checked the Sneakers date, released ‘92 😱 I was close though, right ?! For some reason I always consider my VHS mainly being 80s although I don’t think I actually moved on from VHS until around ‘96 when I made the leap to laserdisc for the uncut version of Scream. Next time I mention VHS, I need to double check my dates first I think.

About 20 years back I had the full collection of Laurel & Hardy movies on VHS. Can’t remember the name of the company but they sent you one cassette a month until the set was complete. I needed to get rid of them as DVDs were the thing. I took them all to 3 different charity shops and they wouldn’t take them. I ended up putting them all in the bin. Scandalous really but you just couldn’t shift VHS tapes back then. Hind sight is always a wonderful thing but yeah, I should have kept them. Although I did replace them all with a full DVD box set from HMV many years ago and I still watch them. All fuelled by nostalgia, I used to watch them with my grandad when I was a kid, I’m now 56. He had some old cinema projectors up in his attic we used to sit for hours watching Laurel & Hardy Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, Keystone cops, Buster Keaton, Fatty Arbuckle & all the old Universal horror films.

I am totally unanimous in how everyone feels.Like some you I was born in the late seventies in a time when VHS was a thing back then and I used to collect them in my teens (well not as much) then a few years later after graduating from high school in the early 2000s I started slowly but surely transitions from vhs to DVD and Blu-ray ( now recordable vhs you can never get rid of them ).Well I am glad that you are taking the rest to a museum type of place to good people who’ll take care of them instead of going to a landfill.The point is that it’s not keeping the format that is important, it’s keeping the memories you once have inside of you, well that’s my take on it!

They do all sorts with the videos. Some will go on display. Some may get sold on. Others, they’ll be repurposed. They use the cases and the tapes for the sell through items they produce. As long as someone makes good use out of them then I’m all for it. Whatever they need to keep their shop / museum alive. I may do a video when I pop into the store for a little tour with the guys.

Answering the Question you posed, My collection represents the history of home video and all its adjacent entertainment. I know folks just don't want or need all that clutter in their lives. If I may be controversial l Feel like there is little respect for the History of film, Many who say they are collectors are just buying everything new. (that's called shopping) the formats that you can no longer watch are decor. In my case, I have a physical media library /museum for my personal entertainment and relaxation. When I am not in collector mode I am watching KZfaqrs collection. I love all their methods and collections but not the toxicity.Peace.

Hi, Half of the boutique label releases are now larger than a VHS. Whatever happened to "Space is at a premium" talking point? If those recorded tapes have ads on them, there is a segment of the collector community that buys them on eBay. For me, It's time to reduce my collection from approximately 10k pieces to 1k pieces. After 40 years of collecting I only used maybe half of what I obtained and My tastes have also changed. It will be just as much fun to watch then sell my acquisitions as it was to buy and watch them. Cheers

The 80s video shop where I’m donating these VHS have someone that will grab some of these to scour through and hunt for old commercials and things. The shop will also be able to make use of the tapes and the cases. If not for display then they’ll be repurposed. My collection numbers are coming down now too. My space is certainly at a premium and I’m considering more about what I’m keeping hold of and why. I can’t justify keeping any of the VHS. The boutique labels certainly do seem to be pushing the sizes of some releases up. Every limited edition seems bigger than a VHS case now

I do love VHS, I recently collected a load, some stuff is so much cooler, I had an ex rental big box driller killer, it's the best way to watch that film, grainy old hammer horror looks superb too, they also look great as a massive wall display, the reason I got rid is simply the lack of room, I tried selling on ebay in sets, but it just wasnt worth the time and hassle to post them all, I gave hundreds away just to save hassle. I think there's an intimacy with physical media that you just don't get with streaming. I converted loads of stuff that was recorded off tv in the 90s and have uploaded it to my youtube, which feels like the right thing to do, they are just going to rot anyway.
@PhillwithadoubleL
@PhillwithadoubleL 2 ай бұрын
I had a chat with the place I’m donating the tapes to. They know a guy that will take all those recorded from TV and hunt through them for anything worth pulling off and digitising. It’s sure a better option than just binning them. Some of the covers are great but I’ve always swung more toward laser disc for a lot of the cover art collecting reasons. I do think some of these upgrades look far too good for the movies. Shame none of the boutique labels offer a non upgraded version there alongside the nice shiny remaster.

I’d say the film or TV show is the priority, not the format. The only reason I’d keep or buy a VHS or a Laserdisc if there was a significant difference in the film that never made to later formats. The Star Wars trilogy for example.

I have a few VHS tapes from when I was a kid and I don't think I'll part with them (I only have about 25 commercial tapes and another 25ish recorded tapes). None of them are movies and most of them are football tapes e.g. classics like Danny Baker's Freak Football or Alistair McGowan's Football Backchat😆. I do have two X files tapes - even though I have series 1 - 9 on DVD. (File 1 The Unopened file and File 3 Abduction). I did have Gremlins 2 many years ago as a kid on VHS but I think that was given away when my parents cleared out their VHS films. I do miss that Gremlins 2 tape for the sole reason it had that weird bit in the middle where the Gremlins invade a John Wayne film whereas in the DVD version Hulk Hogan is shown watching the film in the cinema instead. I bought a cheap VHS player (about £20) years ago for the purpose of digitising my small collection of mostly Football/Soccer Season Reviews and recorded wrestling PPVs. Yes VHS tapes do take up a lot of space!

All dependent upon the individual. For me - No. I was born mid 70’s so lived through VHS. Had a large collection and sold when dvd came about. I was happy to see the width reduction from vhs tape to dvd. Was happy with no drop out lines and machines chewing tapes. I have a couple to VHS tapes that have been gifted to me. And happy with that for Nostalgic reasons. But I wouldn’t collect them now wish to put in a visually and audibly inferior format.

Yeah, I don’t think I had any temptation to try and watch any of these. I remember the tapes getting chewed and having mild freak outs about it. At the time of VHS through the 80s, my dad used to be a tv and VHS engineer and used to fix things up for folks on the kitchen table. I saw loads of things that got jammed into VHS flaps… cheese, necklace and a grass snake are the ones that stick in mind… not all at the same time. Think I sold a majority of tapes to a local video store for about 20p each at the time.

I only tend to keep pre-cert VHS and rarer boxsets or things I can't upgrade. There are occasional titles you can only get this way, for example The Godfather VHS boxset which puts the films in chronological order seen on US TV has, to my knowledge, never had a 'genuine' disc release. For most standard VHS, I kept the paper sleeve, and have a folder of these, but the tapes and boxes had to go! It is a very nostalgic format but it's easy to forget the problems VHS had and we're certainly in a good place now with BR and 4k picture quality. Thanks for another fun video!

Those pre cert releases can cost a fortune too. The guys at the video shop like to get the ‘big box’ rental cases and some movies in them have started to become costly. They do a great job though. Might take a tour around it for the next video. Sounds like you have a quality collection, sadly most of what I had were pretty standard and generic (well, what I showed on the video at least) I remember having to jump up from the sofa to adjust tracking for some VHS. And then my dad being fussy about bringing a tape from the rental place if it had been cold out… couldn’t put it in straight away apparently because of how cold it was 🤷🏼‍♂️
@Tobeshadow
@Tobeshadow 2 ай бұрын
@@PhillwithadoubleL I'd certainly never entertain buying pre-certs now as the prices are totally crazy. Most of mine were car boot sale pickups from around 2001 when people were giving away VHS! Think my biggest ever score was the Alien Facehugger VHS boxset for £5 and that's never leaving the collection! My collection in the 90s was mainly generic tapes and most of those have now gone, replaced with generic DVDs haha!. Rather like what's happening with audio cassettes, I think people have it in their minds that VHS was this wonderful forgotten technology that's still amazing and the truth is it really wasn't. It was amazing at the time because it's all we had but the leap in quality of tranfers has gone up and up in the digital age and VHS isn't comparable to BR/4k in the same way vinyl is with digital music. Ahhh, tracking was a nightmare, my Dad used to ban us from fiddling with it but most of our tapes were so worn out they needed constant adjustment! Never heard the thing about the cold, that's really interesting and probably why our player got knackered so often. Thanks for the reply fella!

I dunno man, I have them on Blu Ray. Dont massively ‘need’ the VHS. I remember seeing Crimson Tide at the cinema. Loved it. In fact, it’s gotta be due a rewatch again soon.

@@PhillwithadoubleL Crimson Tide is top 3 Tony Scott for me. I also have a VHS video coming out soon (Ive been seeing a lot of them on KZfaq lately) lol but I have really been diving back into them.

@@PhillwithadoubleL Dude I've been watching VHS's a lot lately & I talk about it a lot more in my video coming out but for me, & I may be alone but for me, with VHS I know exactly what im getting, im not watching to focus on quality like I feel I do with 4Ks, im watching because I genuinely love the movie & I can just focus on that. Plus the nostalgia factor is pretty high lol

@@thelastmoviestanding that’s the thing with the increasing quality of these thing. I see more reviews of black levels and audio format than I do of the movies and extras… the stuff that really should be most important

I don't miss tapes either type. Them getting eaten by player, so worn the tape just breaks, or the rr ff . That is not something I wanna go back to. Though I do still own a vhs player. I have my copy of Rockula on vhs because I can't afford the few discs that show up for sale.

And having to get up to adjust tracking 😂 I remember those days. Have you looked into getting your VHS of Rockula converted to digital so you can put it onto a disc ?

I would keep the books and it's a matter of fact I had to get rid of my VHS player because it tore up but there were a few VHS tapes that I keep and I finally replaced the my VHS player but if you're not planning on getting another one I say get rid of the VHS but I don't think you should be getting rid of your books

I’m right there with you. Books will be staying for sure. The VHS have now all been donated to a good place. 80s video shop have taken them in. I’ll be doing a tour of the place in my next video 🙌🏼

Unless they are pre cert, video nasties, first releases or late releases (such as Star Wars Episode 3 VHS) they are not worth anything.

Only the pretty ‘standard’ releases left of the collection. Most of my other stuff got sold on. There’s were selected more for the father in law when they got passed on to him. He wouldn’t have appreciated the horror or anything… a little more unique.
