I loved this game when I was a kid. While my nostalgia glasses may color it for me, I don't think it's as bad as you make it out to be. The sounds, cheesiness of it, and the ball mode are all tons of fun in this game. Also, I find it hard to believe it is that hard to play, as I beat the game multiple times at 7 years old.

The game isn't perfect by any means, but you misrepresent a lot in this review. Difficulty is one of the first settings you pick when starting the game, and weapons stay has been an option since the Community Patch, which I notice you have. Most guns have situational firing modes, you never used alternative fire ever. Your statement about small projectiles is silly, considering that most modern games use bullets, significantly smaller, and then follow it up with the largest projectile in game.

I remember this game fondly. Too harsh of a review. This game was groundbreaking for it's time.

The Speedblast mode would actually be kind of cool as a mod for something like Quake III Arena, with the maps designed around bunnyhopping, rocketjumping, and other physics quirks.

There you can customise difficulty and use custom maps n stuff, Nerf Arena Blast is a great game that I used to play the crap out of when I was a kid, it's not too hard and the bots stop jumping after a secondary fire from the triple strike ;) so it's no big deal, it's a short sweet fun game, and I would like to see a comeback with Nerf as it is so fun just like UT but in my opinion more intense and competitive, the weapons is also more different and fun to use :) mabye I see this through nostalgia goggles but its definitely not "the worst FPS game"

You commented a lot on the slow moving projectiles... its a nerf gun not a 7.62. This must have been one of the first FPS's I played along with Unreal Tournament and DOOM and I was blown away by this game and had MONTHS of fun playing it on the family PC

this game is very underrated and actually a very good game, its just as good gameplaywise as unreal actually and the communitypacks makes the game even better and lets you do things like youre used to in other arena shooters if you want.

Alright here's my very different take on Nerf Arena. I played this game a shit-ton back when I was about 5 years old and I didn't know what the fuck was going on. I'd never heard of Quake or Doom and I didn't realize this game was supposed to be a kid-friendly Arena FPS. To me it was just a cool game where you disintegrate enemies with an assortment of weapons made out of odd technologies like plasma shotguns, pulse snipers, gas rockets, and so on. I'd mostly played games like Spyro and Crash Bandicoot before it so it kinda followed a colorful visual style I was used to anyway. But what I cared about was the gameplay, and honestly I loved it. The variety of weapon styles and learning how to use them felt great. The disc-firing weapon was especially fun cause the secondary fire put you in control of a flying disc which you could home into an enemy in first person view of the disc, while the enemies moving around quickly and most of the weapons firing slow projectiles just felt like a fun challenge, and eventually you did get good at the game. The ball game and race thing were, interesting. I wasn't a huge fan of the race mode cause it wasn't that obvious where you were supposed to go and it didn't offer a lot of variety, but it still involved some neat and challenging level design on the paths you had to use to win. The ball mode on the other hand was pretty funny. I remember often trick jumping my way to the mouth of the goal and literally catching every ball thrown into it and then throwing them into the goal myself. Sometimes the AI would shoot at me and force me to leave and ball-hunt fairly, which was fine cause the mode was fun regardless. And that's that. Won't blame anyone for chalking this up to childhood bias but thought I'd share anyway.

Maybe it's nostalgia talking but I recall some of the arenas really capturing an indoor play park vibe very effectively and lending to the overall feel of the game. Might have been the demo level. Either way I liked it.

I had both this and unreal tournament as a kid and played this much more haha. Love UT as well but there is something magical about this game. Now I love it for nostalgia, sure, but as a kid the love was REAL. It's NERF arena shooter, how can you not love that.

Okay, I honestly played this quite recently, and I didn't find much wrong with it... Honestly, how you sounded in this sounded QUITE biased, to be honest... I'm going to in this comment basically do a CALM AND COLLECTED response to some things you said in the video. First things first, with speedblast, there are ARROWS and the lighting indicate what color flag you go for, and it can help out IMMENSELY if you get lost. Yet there were times where I DID get quite lost, but that was only until I got a handle on the game. Next, your comments on the weapons. One is that I personally find NONE of the weapons to suck, well, except for the pistol. And I would say that, except for the Whomper and NERF cannon, the blasters fire at about medium-style speed. Plus, "Small projectiles"? Kind of hypocritical considering that a LOT of conventional firearms in Quake and Unreal shoot BULLETS. Plus, you might have to lead your shot with some of the weapons. And speaking of the NERF Cannon, it's a grenade launcher, not a wand of magic missile! Plus... almost ALL of the weapons have an alternate firemode used by whatever button you set the 2nd fire to.. For example, with the Triple Strike with the alt-fire, shoots all 3 projectiles at once. Now, for my next point, "The A.I. Are Relentless". Honestly, I find that the A.I. are rather balanced, however, sometimes I find myself getting killed over and over again by one using a Hyperstrike.. *COUGH*Littletree*COUGH*, But while you WILL get killed a couple of times, it's actually rather challenging. And while they DO Jump on bounce pads and hit you while in the air, you can do the EXACT SAME THING. Now, onto one of my final points. You saying, and I roughly quote, "There's also no weapon stay option, so the A.I. will go after the weapons as soon as the map starts, leaving you with nothing." May I note that A. Weapons respawn, like in DOOM, for example, and B. Weapons are scattered throughout the map, and you just have to look a little for them, but they aren't impossible to find. Honestly, this game is kind of easier to acquire now due to the fact that it's abandonedware, and it's actually rather simple at its core. And while it IS dated, it doesn't mean it's 100% BAD. And at the end of the day, I actually like this game. It's fun, while challenging, and that's what I typically like in Video Games. And nothing you say will change that. Just saying. EDIT: Okay I JUST found out that there ARE difficulty settings for the game which you can choose by hitting the "New Game" button, which it IS kind of stupid like that.. But whatever.

I think this game was more of a "Fun" factor than trying to be an all out aggressive, and competitive shooter like Quake, like obviously it was made to appeal to younger gamers at the time...and also at the same time used the game as a marketing tool to get more sales with their actual nerf guns. The other problem with this game is...yea the projectiles are slow so that would mean most of the time you'd need to lead your shots. I did like the idea of a hub based lobby where you can go to the arena of your choice though.

The surprising thing I found out is this game "Actually Has A Community"! People actually made maps for this game.

I remember this game and also a similar paintball game. Even then I wondered what the point of a video game with toy guns was. I had fun, but preferred Unreal Tournament.

Nostalgia glasses has me saying you're fucking crazy for calling this game bad. I remember buying this game on PC with the original box at Ross as a kid, and playing it over and over, and I STILL OWN the jewel case in my closet in a comic book box! One thing you missed is that EVERY gun has an alternate fire with RMB. Like the Ballzooka shoots a green slime that if an enemy steps in, they get stuck for a few seconds. Also, "the point" of the game is just high score, so your KD could be absolute trash, but if you collect 750-1000 points off a kill, and hit the markers around map for ez points, you win. Ball blast was always a fun one for me because I would collect and dunk in balls 1-6, and hoard number 7 since the only way to win is the FIRST person to dunk ALL 7 balls. So... yeah, was a never ending deathmatch that I would stack the deck with. Thanks for making a video, so I gave you a like still.

Freaking LOVED this game.

Playing through the game as a teen for nostalgia, even back then, it was pretty easy. Assuming you could move, jump, and aim at the same time. Might explain why I was so good, or bad, at FPS depending on if that was what mattered in the game or not.

I would make a joke that the guns do as much damage as a nerf gun but THATS EXACTLY WHAT THEY ARE!!!!

We had the demo of this on our Windows 98 back when I was a kid. I played the absolute shit out of it, lol. I seriously thought it was awesome tbh. I remember the two map, whatever the big gun was on top of the platform and some area where you start sliding down and picking up stuff haha.
