A quick review and play test of the Eric Marienthal Special mouthpiece from Retro Revival. The mouthpiece reviewed in this video was not given to me to review. I purchase all my gear that I review. I though this was an interesting product that was in need of some more information.
(Sorry for the weird focus).
Randal Clark has toured and recorded with Jeff Lorber Fusion, and is a professor of saxophone at the University of Utah.

First, R.I.P David Sanborn what an amazing musician. I've played for about 21 Years now. I've done a Vandoren V16 A6, Lebayle S8*, now I'm on Vandoren Jumbo Java 7. Thinking of a Beechler Belite 7 to help with soloing over bass and guitar. Since people claim it's tuff to play, I assume it's like the Lebayle S8* Metal. The Retro just costs way more ya know.

If you want the beechler sound with a little easier effort, the Retro is great.

I just watched your review of that your Beechler mouthpiece. I have to say I prefer the sound of your Beechler.

@RandalClarkMusic4333 Thank you for your artistry and insights. You have inspired us with your tone, your playing, your lessons, and your passion. Thank you for a wonderful year of videos (I realize that it’s very time consuming and takes much energy). I wish you health and joy. And, many more rapturous musical moments in 2024 ! -Dr D p.s. I never should have sold my old Beechler metal 7. You sound good on both: this and the RetroRivival EM. I can hear that, although they are similar, they are indeed different in tone and response in different dynamic ranges.

Hey Randal! Would love to hear u test out the Theo Wanne Durga and also any equivalent Drake mpc! You sound a lot warmer on the retro revival as compared to your usual setup :)

It has a nice whole tone to it. It's not too cutting. Sometimes on these high powered mouthpieces they can be so bright you lose the body and just hear the baffle.
@randalclarkmusic4333
@randalclarkmusic4333 6 ай бұрын
Yes the baffle on this is pretty mild for a modern mouthpiece, but it still has some good edge when you push it.

Spoke to Joe Peskin last week when my son was trying Mouthpieces. I asked him about some Sax Players and I brought up your name and he said you are a Bad Ass for a Sax Player. BTW, he said my son is really good. There is nothing wrong with a mixture of you and Eric Marienthal.

That’s great to hear. Your son is lucky to have good equipment. Joel’s a great guy and a phenomenal player himself. Hard to go wrong taking inspiration from Eric Marienthal. Thanks so much!

Would a Legere Synthetic Reed work on this? They do not work on the Beecher Bellite unless you special order. Thank you the demo!
@randalclarkmusic4333
@randalclarkmusic4333 2 ай бұрын
Legere will work, but it’s not great on this mouthpiece. Works better than the beechler without the custom legere facing.

I’m sure it’s a great mouthpiece but I’m not sure it’s any better than a Jody Jazz DV or Super Jet.
@randalclarkmusic4333
@randalclarkmusic4333 6 ай бұрын
Maybe not better or worse but it’s definitely a totally different animal from the DV and Super Jets in how it feels.

Is this a Mouthpiece you would play with as one of your regulars ?
@randalclarkmusic4333
@randalclarkmusic4333 6 ай бұрын
Perhaps. If this was the only mouthpiece available I’d be very happy with it. But I am trying quite a few others to solve some specific issues that I have specific to me. There are a lot of good contenders. I’m going to do a video on each one I try coming up soon
