this is so freaking cool, i have been designing my own in my head for years.. thought about adding a sound system, an old oscilloscope just to show some random sine wave or maybe sound responsive, digital clock, integrated hidden keyboard, hidden printer that just shoots out paper from a slot in the front panel. more switches and buttons the possibilities are endless. you did a great build

I think some illuminated toggle switches with safety covers would be cool! Maybe a row of them that you flip up the cover and they illuminate, then when you flip the switch a coordinating LED lights up. Have these turn on power supplies and effects... even power actuated stuff. This is a really pretty cool thing! Take Care and be safe, John

People that comes to this channel and gives a thumb down, don't get the content of this channel. This is the best desk I have seen in a long time. Storage is very important for desks, and one of the reasons I love old desks with small drawers and cabinets. Maybe it would be possible to get more out of the "volume" available behind the lcd and around the screens. IKEA has some very interesting hidden "lifters" for draws and cabinets fronts for kitchen. So you would not need to show that it's a door or a drawer. Thank you for this greate project. I do love the use of what you have, it's a very good way of doing things. Keep using "scrap" when possible, this makes it possible for others to make your projects and it helps nature.

Perhaps speakers could be installed in the shoulders? They could be of much greater output than the T.V. speaker.

A woodworker here. I never thought of anything about your woodworking skills other than being impressed with your ingenuity, creative fabrication, and your confidence to tackle a project and finish it without being sure of the result. Your game console/desk turned out incredible. I enjoyed watching the process. Thanks for sharing it. Congratulations on a fantastic job. Troy P.S. I'm a switches kinda guy so that's my vote on the side panels.

If you hinge the shoulder panels on the inside edges then you could tilt and lock them to get objects out and still have switches accessible from the seated position? The wiring formed into a loom which can longitudinally rotate near the hinges.

I really like it. My opinion: the shoulders need something on them. Maybe add some none functioning switches and buttons if you want to keep them as storage. You definitely need USB ports externally, either use IP rated (waterproof) ports, they make them with screw off lids and a retaining chain, or cut a USB cable and wire a 5 pin DIN socket into it which would match the 70s/80s look. You need to find a heavy looking old keyboard (something like an IBM model M) or modify a modern keyboard into a heavy looking enclosure, or take a look on ebay for point of sale (shop til) keyboards or industrial keyboards (they even made some in stainless steel that would look awesome). If you can bare to use one, a trackball mounted into the desk would look amazing instead of the mouse, also an old arcade joystick as someone else has already commented. It needs some old panel meters. If you can find one, a flip clock mounted in the panel would look fantastic. Also (just my opinion)if you can bare to dismantle the CRT again it would look fantastic with the visible part of the enclosure frame painted white to match the desk.

I like the idea of using the shoulders as storage, add hinges to lift them like you are currently manually opening them. I would personally add a stereo with cool graphic EQ lights and an amplifier to be the sound system, put it in an enclosure underneath the mysterious red light, add some grills around the screens with the speakers. Then you have the benefits of all of your audio coming out of one system, and have a cool headset that works too.

Cool deal. For the shoulder compartments install the same connectors that are on the back of your monitor and computers. All the connectors that you can't get to without pulling the desk out. Now connect each of those connectors to the real connectors in the back. So male connectors in the back connect to identical male connectors in the shoulder compartments and same with female to female. Now if you ever need to change configurations as far as cables go, just open the panel and change it there.

It has been mentioned before, but hidden inside hinges for the covers is one. Another, almost must, is a row of illuminated switches to power every device you have on the desk, they are cheap and it would look like you are in full control of everything at the tip of your fingers. Some old analog meters would be a nice additional decoration too, below or above the screens. Even speakers below or above the screens, hidden behind some grill plate. As a home project, you did a wonderful job, be proud!

I think it would be good to have the led arrays, and the red lamp, driven from the computer. With a bit of coding things like CPU temp, Processor load, and net traffic could be displayed. While it would not be human readable, it would give some real meaning to these displays.
@TheTurnipKing
@TheTurnipKing 5 жыл бұрын
I feel like it's better to have them driven by the Arduino, and then have the Arduinos driven by the PC. You can send the information you want displayed to serial terminal on the arduino, but this way they'll still function even when the main PC is off.

Was thinking something similar; at least, the red light that represents the computer's "thought processes" should be linked to the computer's actual operation. Meaning: off when the computer is off and on when it's on, at the very least, but if it could also change in intensity based on the load, that would be even better.

For the side pieces, may I suggest: 1) add all types of useful gauges from sensors connected to another Arduino (maybe temp, humidity, status of equipment/doors, etc) 2) add buttons that actually do something useful (lock/unlock room door, opens/closes the storage lids doors, hide/unhide the HAL light or the monitors, have multiple PCs behind the desk and have a KVM button to change the screen to another PC, install a fan and have buttons to control speed, etc). Not only would it look futuristic, you'd be a Bond villain at the same time

You have made a very wonderful console, I wish I had the skills to make something so beautiful. My own DiY builds have functionality, but less asthetic beauty. To take your buid to the next step you may want to hide a keyboard slide below the desktop, inserted in the aluminum edge face. LED keyboards will enhance your already lovely structure. Also think about built in speakers, and or an audio link to an external sound system (maybe with LED's later too). Definitely be sure to add computer fans hidden in the sides. This will keep the CRT and other electronics cool. Computer cameras, artfully embedded in the main aluminum panel will give the computer more functionality. Be sure to add a UPS to the whole system, as you now have many one-of-a-kind, or hard to replace components. The whole system is wonderful, and big enough to hide a decent multi-terrabyte server behind it. Add one of those, with remote access from the computer to control it, and multiple USB ports for portable devices, and powering your everyday equipment, like tablets and cellphones. One last item; I would angle the desk leg support, so it tapers from the leading desktop edge back to the original footprint. Your reference photos from 2001 A Space Odyssey hint at similar angles. The weight of the computer towers in the back will hold it in place.

Awesome creation! I really liked the the Light Panels and the Mysterious Red Light, they gave the desk some awesome life that would otherwise be bland, boring and just a white oddly shaped desk. But now it looks like it came right off the USCSS Nostromo and placed into your shop.... Even though the red light is more from _"2001: A Space Odyssey"_ . Next step - add a sound board and speaker that would say "Good Morning, Dave" and "I am afraid I can not comply with that request" or "This conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye. " just to add to the HAL feeling when staring into that flickering mysterious red light :). Awesome work! I am looking forward to your next creation!
