Retro Striped Text Effect Illustrator Tutorial (+ FREE Textures!)

In today's Adobe Illustrator tutorial we're going to create a striped text effect with a retro 70s vibe. We'll create the effect by layering up a series of strokes and fills with Illustrator's Appearance panel, which preserves the live text so you don't lose the ability to edit the wording.
Once the artwork is complete, I'll then show you how you can achieve an old t-shirt look with the help of my free washed and worn textures.

i've worked with illustrator for an odd 10 years and i didn't know that in the appearance panel you could change the order of strokes/fills like with layers. mind.blown.

3:19 For those having trouble getting the stroke color to change, you need to shift-click with the eye dropper tool when clicking on the palette.

Love this man. My only question now if for screen print how can you now add over print strokes of about 2 pixels? For as a beginner Manual printer, these are a necessity.

Great instructions, thank you! Though have color codes changed? Mine seem to not match up exactly, a bit pail compared to yours. Using CS5 so I had to use a hex to CMYK converter. 😐

Hi there! I loved the Number Seven Font style so went and bought and downloaded it. BUT, the way it works for you with the additional character styles, it doesn't work the same for me. There are 5 styles listed in the font drop down, but when I highlight a single character nothing happens. I am still working with an older version of Illustrator (CS5) that at this point I am unable to upgrade. Do you think that may be the issue? Thanks ahead of time for your response! Shain

yes just multiply the layer from the transform pannel (at the bottom) as many times as you need

Hey thanks for the tutorial! I am having trouble changing the text after I’ve added all the effects? When I backspace the text and add new letters it just becomes a cluster of shapes and is not spelling out a word… does anyone else have this issue? How can I fix this?
