I started with AutoCAD 2.62 (younger than many here) jejeje this was back in the Universidad de America, Bogotá, where I was studying Architecture. This was a real revolution back then and the desigh teachers were really obfuscated when someone delivered an AutoCAD plotted layout plan. I remember AutoCAD 9, 10, 11, 12 DOS and Windows, 14 and then the Jump to 2000 Series! Good memory lane. Thanks for sharing!

It's nice to see how AutoCAD was before. It has almost every thing. Seems like AutoCAD evolved slowly. I have been very inspired from it and wanted to make my own CAD software like it.

I remember when use by first time AutoCAD 1.4 in the university in course draw tech in 1988. I remember the commands and others tips to draw. Incredible times! 😊

My employer purchased AutoCAD in about 1984 for our three drafters (on the IBM XT) but as a mechanical engineer I didn't pay any attention to it until about 1988 when my boss said I should learn how to use it. The early systems used a BNW graphics card driving a 19" RGB long-persistence monitor at (if I recall) 1024x1024 in about 4 colours. The MDA monitor was used for booting and the AutoCAD command line. As expected, all drawings were stored on floppies and placed in an old shoe box. Plots were made on an HP E-size printer. The v2.18 (approx) 3-ring binder user manual was intimidating to read but once I sat down at the keyboard (with v10) I found it pretty easy. After a few weeks occasionally asking the drafters for help I soon became proficient. After reading about the data resolution being something like 40 decimal places I realised that to use it optimally lines need to be entered precisely, e.g 1/64" is 0.015625" rather than 0.156". I also found that I could speed up AutoCAD considerably by placing the .EXE, .OVL and scratch files on a RAM disk rather than let AutoCAD decide how to exploit unallocated Extended/Expanded memory. We used the IBM 286 AT, then 386 and eventually 486 clones usually with 2-4MB RAM. We stuck to DOS with Xtree as a front-end to AutoCAD and eventually a 12-node thin-coax Lantastic network. Our VP mentioned to me once that it was embarrassing to reveal our setup to visitors once Windows 3.1 was common in offices, but this was fast, reliable and cheap. I once tried to produce a 2-D design layout with 6 views and found it hopeless to keep them all matching so tried using 3-D. Because the industrial machinery we were designing was essentially orthogonal in nature, it was possible to represent almost everything needed with only thick polylines and circles. Soon we were well on our way with everyone in the department on-board with the interpretation of 3-D design layouts to derive production drawings, pretty much what AutoDesk did later with paper space. A complex X-Y table layout for example was only 1MB in size. Amusingly, when I attended CAD seminars put on by SGI, SUN, and PTC etc, it turned out that we were one of the only local companies already designing in "3-D", despite the almost-comical limitations. I used to update one of our 10 AutoCAD licenses every release to evaluate the improvements (up to v13) but we stuck to v10 as a group until 1995 because it did everything we needed. Eventually we moved on to NT3.51 with v13c6, a combination that allowed opening much larger assemblies with the advantage of mixing in solid models where needed.

Thanks so much Paul. Your experiences mirrored my own in many ways. In those early CAD days we were all pioneers, figuring out how to use these tools and discovering new techniques all the time.

I started out on 1.40 on a CGA display with a HIPAD digitizer. Never thought in a million years would I fill the 10 meg hard drive. I did. It was just a little different from the Fusion 360 that I use now...lol. Thanks for the video and the great memories.

RetroCAD I got my start as a draftsman for a company manufacturing loudspeakers, home entertainment and professional. We got a copy of Autocad with an NC machine that we bought for manufacturing. I ran with it and we finally did away with pencil and paper after about a year. I think 2.18 or 2.52 was the last version I used there

Very cool that I've found your channel on youtube. I use to work a lot with AutoCad running on D.O.S in the beginning. I've got retired as an Intergraph Plant Design System - PDS, as a Senior Admin... Wich is the system that I like tho most. Btw, I just love'd the guitars in the background. I'm also a guitar player. Cool channel. I've just subscribed. I wish I could show you my work nowadays with WebGl, but I dont know how to sent you a link without sharing in this comment. And in general, streamers dont use to approve comments with links. Cheers from Southern Brasil

what others see the software : autocad . . also actual designers see the software : autoscam

Kind of a weird flex on the 1985 version but since you specifically differentiated "actual designers", I am interested in hearing more. What aspect of AutoCAD do you see as a scam?
