ZemiSmart introduced its first Matter (over WiFi) enabled roller blind motor a year ago, and finally they've introduced Thread versions of the device. I say 'versions' as they have a wired model and a rechargeable battery model, both with Matter over Thread.
This video focuses mostly on the battery version, which gives you, the customer, a pretty budget friendly option that allows you to keep your existing blinds, but is still cheaper compared to retrofit blind motors from companies like Eve, for example. How do they fare? Watch to find out.

I got three of the first models, even though they are on wifi i have minor issues they have been reliable so far and i use it with homekit right now im waiting on the motors for Honeycomb blinds hope they do that kind one day.

The RF & Thread aerials, can you hide these so that they’re hidden or do they just dangle? Great video though, been looking into some smart blinds. Initially looked at IKEA but they don’t have the sizes needed so these should be ideal.

Yes, I believe during installation you can just position the motor so that the wires can sit behind the roller tube as opposed to above it. You just have to ensure the USB-C port is accessible for recharging I guess.

Do you know how large of a blind this will accomodate? I have a large front window(86in x 54 in) I would like to automate and I want to know if this will be effective for that

It would be hard to give you a definitive answer, as there are many other factors to consider; for example the weight of the blinds, depending on what material is used. There’s also the diameter of the roller tube to consider as to whether this would fit. I would err on the side of caution and contact ZemiSmart directly to get a more definitive answer before making any purchasing decisions.

Can this unit be controlled directly from latest applepod or google nest which are compatible with matter and have built in thread border router without using a zemismart M1 router

Yes, as long as you have a Matter Controller and Thread Border Router, these will work directly within Google, Amazon, SmartThings, or Apple Home. You don’t need the M1 Gateway unless you want to add these to the Tuya platform.

Would I be able to use this motor on skylight shades? Not sure if there are any blinds that meet the requirements for this or the eve motor for skylights

Unless it uses a roller tube, then probably not, but I’m not familiar with the typical mechanics of skylights.

Where can I find 38mm roller shade tubes? All of my tubes are 25mm (1"), and I can't seem to find a place to purchase the 38mm tubes here in the US, not on Amazon, HomeDepot or Lowes. Any clue?

You just need a HomePod Mini or the latest 128Gb Apple TV. That’ll give you everything you need - a Matter Controller, a Thread Border Router, and Apple Home Hub.

A Thread Border Router (TBR) is different from a standard WiFi router, even if they use similar names. TBRs are usually inside existing devices, like Apple HomePod Mini, some Apple TVs, and the 2nd gen HomePod. These all also act as Matter Controllers. You need a TBR and a Matter Controller so that the Thread Radio inside the roller blind motor has something to connect to and the Matter Controller allows you to add the device to your smart home platform of choice. You can find Apple TV, HomePod etc on Apple.com or possibly Amazon in your region. If you’re not an Apple user, then Amazon Alexa and Google make their own TBRs/Matter Controllers too.

Fantastic video, thanks for sharing! I'm a bit confused about the compatibility of the roller tube diameters. In your video, you mentioned 36-37mm roller tubes, but then Zemismart's website states that "The motor is suitable for blind tubes with a diameter of 38mm." Here in Italy it gets even more confusing because roller blinds' tube sizes vary a lot (when you can find that info about the diameter, which is rare) and there doesn't seem to be a standard. Add to that the fact that I'd like to install the blinds directly onto the windowpane, and I'm completely lost. The ones that would be ideal in my situation have a 18mm diameter 😓 I'll figure something out! Again great video and thanks!

The discrepancy between measurements is probably connected to the inner and outer tube measurements. The measurements I mention were provided to me, but there’s a little bit of leeway regarding the size, hence my mentioning 36-37mm. There are lots of sizes of roller tube, so yes there isn’t a standard as such, but this size should be available depending on where you go. They are coming out with a slimmer motor for thinner tubes. When you say “directly onto the windowpane”, do you mean the frame?

@@riccardo12158 your English is fine! I guess depending on the depth/size of the window frame, you could affix the brackets to it. It would depend on the length and weight of the blinds as to how well they would hold up, but based on you mentioning an 18mm tube size, I assume the blinds aren’t too big. In this video I mounted the brackets to a wall, but they’re also able to be mounted to a ceiling of course.

I think this is extremely confusing. How does it accommodate different roller blinds as far as the width of the window. We understand the diameter is an issue but what if your window is wider than that roller tube I wish you would explain this.
