Here are my initial impressions of the new Anbernic RG405V, a vertically-oriented handheld that is almost comically large and comfy.

Bro does more work before the video is even out than most reviewers. Nothing else needs to even be said. If you like retro handhelds, then this channel and the other channel (literally named "Retro Handhelds") are the only ones worth the time of day. The rest are just "entertainers" with no real substance.

none of the latest gen anbernic devices (rg505,rg405m, rg405v) have it unfortunately. Their only device that did...this year was their budget device..rg35xx. To the best of my knowledge.

I just ordered myself the Wood Grain 405V with the 128GB sd card and hard carrying case add on! I realize the 405V is a portable handheld and not a pocket sized handheld like my 280V. Still got my Wood Grain 351V as well. Now I will have both of the beautiful Wood Grain ANBERNICs! I consider the Wood Grain 351V to be the violin, the Wood Grain 405V the viola since it's larger.

8:48 i love that the trend for last 2/3 generations of Anbernic verticals was to get smaller and smaller (all the way to the nano) and after they've proved their point...then all of a sudden they did a complete 180 and went XXL. Now i'm rootin for a 5 or even 6inch verticle.....lets go!

Cheers Russ, I'm finding this one is growing on me. Looking forward to the full review and price reveal, with that battery and a fan I think similar to the 405M, we shall see. This is just a me thing but I would be interested to see how the sticks work with Robotron (as an example of 8 way retro joystick use). I've found the hall sticks I've put in my Odin favour diagonals over the cardinal points, making firing straight down or up a bit finicky. The gamepad tester you showed suggests this won't be a problem but it would be nice to see it confirmed. I have not trademarked calling this the Robotron test. 😉

Of all the retro handhelds released this year, the 405V I find the most intriguing! Being a fan of the Wood Grain 351V, I've got to have this. *Thanks for showing us the size and visual comparison between the Wood Grain 351V and Wood Grain 405V! I've been asking KZfaqrs to do this. Your review of the 405V is the most detailed and best one I've seen so far.

When I held this for the first time I was quite surprised at how chonky it was. It brought me back to the gamegear era. I hope they make some more changes to iron out the small quirks because it looks like it actually has potential

My RG353V is still in the mail, should be here any day. This was not available when I was looking. It has a bigger screen, ventilation port, ergonomic shoulder buttons, and has a gyroscope (nice bonus). This is only $10 more than what I paid, and yet approximately twice as powerful. To say that it is painful, is an understatement. With that said, this will always be the case. There will always be better products being released. My plan is to buy whatever I feel is the best fit for my budget while using new technology, every couple of years. I could get my panties in a knot, bite the bullet, and buy the RG405V now but realistically the RG353V is still a great device. I'll use it for some years and then buy whatever they are pushing, lol.

I love that they tried to fix the vertical handheld problem with ergonomics but I don’t think they did enough. As big as it is, to fix this it needs to be even bigger. If your gonna try to solve the problem you minds well go all the way Also with the tear down I think that the shoulder button issue could be fixed with shaving a bit off the parts that touch the micro switches. Now you absolutely shouldn’t have to do that but at least you can

I'm mainly wondering about how responsive the volume buttons are and how loud and clicky the shoulder buttons are in comparison to the 351v. Those are my main complaints with that handheld and I'd hope that they've improved upon that

Hi, great review! One point that I will apologize in case already commented/asked... You mention that unfortunately this has no video out but there is a lot of people around saying that a USB c to HDMI cable will actually transmit the video signal out, any opinions or possibly can you try this, if you already have the device? I've been looking into the market for a handheld the size of the original Gameboy that is built well and mechanically the buttons and stuff feel good and that it can play up to ps2 and gamecube fluidly. I've seen reviews that it can play some titles well but Im looking for one that can do all. I hope the next one they release it can do that. This is literally almost EXACTLY what I want If they can fix the Dpad a bit and make the analog better and hdmi out on the next one, then yes im getting

I bought an r36s, it feels great, the classic titles are super addictive, but it turned out to be a bit too small for my old hands. I've now ordered an rg405V, I think it should fit... It's the old feeling of playing great titles on a classic Game Boy... I miss it... Somehow, older titles played on the ROG Ally don't give me the same feeling as on a vertical handheld console.😊

A note on the fan, it could be that because the battery is so big, it can run for a lot longer and therefore heat becomes a concern slowly over the course of several hours. So I bet the fan stops it from crashing after a few hours of play, which other handhelds with this chip would not hit with their smaller batteries? maybe

If the current crop of devices can run GameCube well, then it is the next generation I’m looking forwards to purchasing. I only want to play up-to GameCube, but want as near to perfect performance as possible, so the next generation should meet that purpose for me.

This may finally be the unit that gets me to upgrade from the 351p; which is great, but I find uncomfortable in my palms. The price, while perhaps good value, is out of my range. I will wait until something like this comes in around $100.

So had a switch since 2019 picked up an oled about a week after its launch thought about modding my original HAC-001. Or getting this can’t tilt the scales in favor of one way or the other. Thoughts of if it’s worth getting or just sticking with the switch which I love?
