Retroid has now unveiled the Retroid Pocket 4 and 4 Pro, no release date announced yet but we get a good look at how it's changed and the new specs. Pretty interesting upgrades overall and I expect the release date to come soon.

*BRAVO!* RP4Pro is perfect. Pocketable. Powerful. Analogue triggers. Cooling. Hal Joysticks. Dedicated home/back buttons. Increased battery. $200 is a _small investment_ for such a *Fun Toy.* Heck, the 1.5 TB SD card I'm going to put into mine almost costs that much.

@@janX9 Well no actually, the size difference between the odin and the retroid is very big and we are missing the sweet spot in the middle... A handheld with a 5.5 screen with very optimised bezels would be just a tiny bit larger but still smaller than odin

Nice upgrade but already having an Odin 2 there's no reason to get a Retroid 4. My little advice is to invest a little more and get an Odin 2. You will have a way better emulation device for years to come. Maybe even the Retroid 5 won't reach the Odin 2

Disagree if they also have a windows handheld as they will run switch far better then the odin 2. And if this retroid ends up running ps2 and gamecube without tinkering like the original odin required, this would be a great handheld to have for up to ps2 emulation in a compact package and keep your switch and modern library on your 7840u device.

I’m satisfied with my RP3+. I love the d-pad placement. I use it up to PSP and occasionally GameCube (haven’t tried PS2). I think if I wanted to play more GameCube and PS2 games I would go with the Odin 2. The Odin 2 seems to be a better form factor for those systems as well as streaming from modern systems.

@@Rickidaone So true. I honestly think the best way to play PS2 and GameCube (and most all consoles after) is with your left thumb naturally resting on a thumbstick and not a d-pad. That's just how the majority of those games were designed. The better capability for PS2 performance on the RP4 is great but I think I'd get hand cramps with the low thumbsticks. I think I'll eventually get an Odin 2 especially with the idea that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has some future-proofing.

While I just got an Odin 2 max. I'd love to get this, though the 16:9 screen is kind of a turn off for me. I still use my RP2S quite a bit because of it's 4:3 screen and retro looking aesthetic.

this release seems to be good. they basically did the same thing that ayn did with the odin, which is to keep all the good things, improve minor things, and add more power. while the screen is a bit small for ps2/gc emulation, i always found it was an acceptable compromise for having a pocketable device. now that i have odin2, i do miss taking off the grips on my rp3 and throwing it in my pocket when going out. i loved my rp3 and now with more power, it will only make it better for others. oh yeah, and they finally got rid of that stupid start/select placement on the top.

@-roetaka
@-roetaka 6 ай бұрын
To be honest if you're leaning to the Odin Pro I think it's worth saving for the Odin 2, not just because of the power but the entire build is just so much nicer. It's harder to convey in videos just how much nicer it is. As for the RP4 Pro obviously it's hard to recommend because it's not out yet with no release date, but the easiest thing to say is do you want something smaller like a PSP (RP4) or bigger like a Switch (Odin)?
@janX9
@janX9 6 ай бұрын
I was *ABOUT* to get the Odin 2 Max myself. It is 3 times the cost, but it would be powerful for years to come. But now I'm going with the RP4Pro. It's only $200, it's pocketable and can play the entire PS2 catalogue without needing to mess with emulator settings. Should keep me pretty happy for a while. Meanwhile the market is getting _flooded_ with handhelds *SOOOO* in a year or two, handheld prices will drop and they will probably have the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or 3. So really cheap but really powerful handhelds are on the way.

As far as I know this is the first time they've released more than one model at the same time. It doesn't make a lot of sense from a manufacturing point of view to source parts for two different models and then push another one out after...but I do like to be suprised 😅. Also Retroid seems to fit the $100-200 market nicely, once they push past that number they're pushing into a very competitive space and I don't know if they have the right product to take that slice yet.
@anotherthing
@anotherthing 6 ай бұрын
@@-roetaka That was my thought also. The RP4 Pro is essentially the RP4+ model, just released at the same time which is better than how they released the RP2 and RP2+ followed by the RP3 then RP3+. This way looks a lot better since that's how other companies are doing it and they didn't get near the hate that Retroid did with their former release model.

@anotherthing
@anotherthing 6 ай бұрын
@@janX9 I never got the hate other than the fact that some people rushed to get the Next Big Thing and then had to either buy the upgrade hardware or buy another new console. There's a whole lot of retro handheld companies that release low and high end versions of the same console, but Retroid got the pile on action since they delayed the release of their higher end versions by a few months. I guess that they could have said that they were going to release the plus models shortly when they released the first version.

the biggest bummer is the 4.7 Screen with 720p! The other Handhelds has 1080p Screens which make a lot more sense!
@-roetaka
@-roetaka 6 ай бұрын
It would've been nice if the Pro model had a 1080p screen. I think typically people who want the more expensive models are prepared to pay a little more for quality, so had that bumped the price a bit more I think it would've been ok, but I understand it's a very competitive market. I imagine it was best for their costs though to source the same screen for two models, shipments of screens can have a percentage that flat out don't work. Still 720 for the size is alright and will draw less power and less heat overall.

If they were to remove the bezels I would understand the 1080p upgrade, but if not, just keep in mind this is for the retro community. I hope they remove the bezels and do the 1080p upgrade, they can engrave retroid on the back of the handheld. In other words, I don't know why the people are hating that they are kinda reusing the shell, this shell is perfect, it fits right on our pockets as the flip gives sense to its company name.

@@janX9 RP4 Pro is the best for PS2 emulation for it's price point maybe but best PS2 emulation nope! My Odin 2 (base) model can play N64, Wii, GameCube, PS2, Dreamcast, Saturn at full speed even 3x resolution heck I threw in 6x resolution and still played at near full speed no lags, no stutters, no audio problems no video issuess. Odin 2 has the best processor currently Snapdragon 8gen 2 is incredibly powerful processor that plays any emulators including yuzu which can play switch at 30fps. It'll be able to emulate switch at 60fps 6 months from now when it gets full update to run better. And display is so nice 1080p ips LCD and stereo speakers sound better than my Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus speakers it is really loud when you crank it to full volume and the bass is very good as well. And has WiFi 7, and Bluetooth 5.3 and 65w fast charging support and hdmi support. I'm sure the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro will be very good handheld console with it's MediaTek Demensity 11 processor which will be powerful and let. You play PS2 games at 2x resolution but I can easily crank that up to 6x resolution on my Odin 2 and it would still play at near full speed. And because the RP4 Pro is gonna be cheaper in price than Odin 2 base it'll have to cut corners be it 720p resolution ips LCD display over 1080p and probably worse off speakers compared to Odin 2 and Bluetooth 5.3 won't be there and WiFi 7 and 65w fast charging won't be there and probably no charging separation. And no ambient light on analogue stick and side of the device all the cool features gone and you have bare bone device enjoy it buddy that's what'll you get for 200 bucks if not 250. If say spend 350 bucks get Odin 2 and you get vastly superior device meant to play emulate every retro consoles ever made. And at full speed even on 6x resolution and powerful graphically demanding mobile games run at 60fps with ease. And the 8000mah on Odin 2 has absolutely amazing battery life!
