The spine has three sections, the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. Each consists of vertebrae which are separated by intervertebral discs. Each section has a healthy characteristic of a normal curvature to allow it to deal with compression forces and mechanical pressures of everyday life.
Retrolisthesis is when one bone moves backward relative to the ones above or below. Most commonly, this condition affects the lumbar or cervical spine, although it can affect the thoracic. A 2mm shift can lead to nerve compression, disc herniation, and bulging.
The most common type of retrolisthesis is a complete retrolisthesis which is when one bone moves back relative to the bone above and below. A partial retrolisthesis is when a bone moves back but only to the bone above or below. A staircase retrolisthesis is when bones move in a staircase effect. When the spine moves out of its normal alignment, it can cause problems.
The most common symptoms are back pain in the area or generalized. Decreased range of motion, sharp pinching pain related to nerve compression, numbness, and weakness. Once it affects the nerves, it can also lead to some function issues, such as affecting the functions of different organs and muscles, and tissues. Posteriorly you could even visibly see the spine bulging.
The symptoms and effects are case specific, relating to the severity, age, and location of where it is occurring.
The most common cause of retrolisthesis is the alignment of the spine. Many things can affect the alignment of the spine, such as spinal degeneration and arthritis (both inflammatory and degenerative). Congenital anomalies and spinal injuries, bone or blood infections, nutritional deficits, neuromuscular conditions, osteoporosis, overall body core weakness, and spinal weakness can lead to shifting of the spine.
