Here’s a review of Kanto’s new magnetically-shielded speakers, that are safe to use next to CRT displays of all kinds! The “Ora” line was a bit bass-heavy, but overall sounded great. Here’s links (affiliate where available) to everything discussed:

Kanto is legit. I got their YU6 speakers and for the price they sound excellent. Honestly I never knew about the issues with modern speakers not having magnetic shielding, or the fact that they had magnetic shielding in the first place. Glad they released these for CRT enthusiasts in the modern era.

FWIW, I didn’t have too much trouble finding magnetically shielded monitors on marketplace in the span of a couple months. I can confirm the Akai RPM3 and MAudio AV40 are both shielded and sound nice to my ears with some basic EQ’ing with the TVs Treble and Bass settings.

I bought those same Bose Companion II Series 2 speakers, used, this month. About $70 USD (100ish CAD) and worth every bit. Perfectly shielded as well.

Love the audio-related videos! Please keep them coming! I’d use these on my desktop 4K Panel and CRT VGA monitor, but I’d love for the active speaker to have an A/B switch and option to buy a second passive speaker. That way I can have proper stereo for either the monitor or the VGA CRT. I’d flip for a beige/light gray color way!

Thank you! After watching your first video I had a look at the sad state of magnetically shielded speakers and I decided to go passive since I already have an old analogue AV receiver in my Retro CRT cart ;). I am happy to say that the Dali Concept-1 are shielded and they sound very nice. Of course, they have been out of production for many years, so second hand is the way to go.

Another awesome video Bob. Not cheap but it is nice to have a "new" option in this category. For the past several months, I've been considering purchasing a second pair of Edirol speakers. However, many times you are rolling the dice when you buy used online. The only minor issue I saw with my setup is that there was no optical (TOSLINK).

These look great. I’ve been using JBL 305 MKIIs for a while. They work amazing for my vinyl collection but I also use them with my PVM. I think a sub would be required for most folks who want to use monitors for gaming but I’m perfectly happy with how they are atm. I do want to add a sub eventually when I can spare the money for one

I do a lot of old PC stuff, and have been pleased to find that many, if not all, of the modern Logitech PC speaker line has retained its magnetic shielding. Sound quality is a different debate, since what I assumed was a 'subwoofer' is actually a 'woofer'🤣--meaning no stereo separation for that range. Stereo separation seems to be going out of style in general, I blame the rise of sound bars and bluetooth speakers.
@Deltax5

Those speakers look kool. Have bluetooth as well. I ended up getting the SVS 5.1 bundle for the Onkyo receiver. They sound pretty good. The speaker test passed put against a TV i didn't want. . IDK if i made the right decision. I only googled top budget speakers and got that as a result. Don't think ill upgrade them. As i am on a budget. I can't get a answer what the right receiver is for the LG c1. I had some help to buy the TV. As being the top TV. For the ps5. And retro. I hope i made the right decision. Mostly for the plenty of hdmi's. They do make things complicated to buy. I can always get a scalier. Got framemeister for now. Does good. Maybe something for 4k in the future. In the savings.

Shopping for bookshelf speakers is wild because people just lie about the shielding. I went with Klipsch years ago. Advertised as shielded, and I even contacted customer support directly and explained the CRT situation. They told me the speakers would be perfect lmfao. Long story short, I learned why my TV has a degauss button (: (: (: Additionally, It's difficult to find shielded speakers that also justify being paired with a PVM vs consumer CRT in the first place.

This might be a dumb question but how did you connect them to your A20? I've never used external speakers before especially on a crt.
@RetroRGB
@RetroRGB 7 ай бұрын
Not a dumb question at all! I used a SCART to BNC adapter that also breaks audio out to RCA cables. I just connected those to the speakers.

This is great info I have non magnetic shielded speakers, how far away should I keep them away?
@RetroRGB
@RetroRGB 7 ай бұрын
My NON-scientific advice (seriously, just a guess): Move them away until you can't see interference. Then double the distance. It can still affect your CRT long-term if it's right on the edge.

@RetroRGB ok Thanks, I'm using polk t15 and they say they are magnetic shielded but I will confirm with my two crt tvs, but also I just realized this because I have two crt next to each other to play time crisis with ps2 link cables, does 2 crt next to each other effect themselves or did they think of that?
@RetroRGB

They absolutely can. If possible, fire up a color pattern, or all white screen and test like I showed in the other video (linked in the description). You SHOULD be okay with the CRT's next to each other, but I always like to know.

There where getting a lot of love when announced because they didn't have a price attached to them yet. A lot of the reviews I saw said these would be a great value at $199 or maybe at $249. They ended up being $350. There are plenty of magnetically shielded speakers available for way less. Even like the Klipsch Pro Media 2.1 I believe that can often be had for under $100 if you look. I paid $50 for a set a couple of years ago at Walmart.

Is using non-magnetically shielded ones ok as long as the speakers are more than far enough to not see any distortion? I did casually notice this issue some time ago when placing the speaker right next to the monitor, but it disappears as soon as I move them even slightly away from it. I'm definitely pushing them farther and farther away nowadays though 😂 (I keep them ~7 inches away, distortion appears when they're under ~1 inch away)
@RetroRGB
@RetroRGB 7 ай бұрын
My absolutely UN-scientific method is to put them at least twice the distance from when you see distortion. I wish I knew solid advice though.

Klipsch doesn’t make magnetically shielded speakers. Also, you’d be surprised how they sound cs louder speakers. If you closed your eyes, there’s no way you could tell the difference between 5” speakers similarly tuned. You shouldn’t assume how something sounded based on its look.

@@RetroRGB I know they don't make shielded speakers, I was just talking in general as an audio lover, for example the RP-600M which are a nice pair of speakers if you like a v-shape type of signature, right now runs for $350 and they're more versatile than a tiny speaker for that same amount.
