Obviously Square Enix owns the rights to all the game content, music, concept art, and footage used. A lot of other footage was lifted from promotional footage and material posted to the official Final Fantasy XV youtube channel, the Namco Bandai youtube channel, and the Square Enix youtube channel. Please don't sue me for nerding out for hours on end. Clearly I'm a big fan.
I couldn't justify talking about it in the video but the Pitioss Ruins are a FANTASTIC dungeon and one of my favorite parts of the game.

I unironically *love* this kind of stuff. absolutely yes please tell me about video game lore for the next two and a half hours. (and this specific video is wonderfully thorough! it really makes everything feel cohesive even though it's broken up into like 12 different components. that true ending stuff sounds like it would've been buckwild if it had ever been fully realized, I wonder if it could have felt like less of a waste/undermining if it had been a game expansion rather than essentially a side novel.)

Sorry last comment. Certain themes in the story like Noctis being a sleepy head actually has a reason, he comes from the City of Insomnia and insomnia is the lack of being able to fall asleep, Noctis is the opposite he always sleeps he sleeps everywhere, the brotherhood media shows this perfectly
@IiI_Gogeta_IiI
@IiI_Gogeta_IiI 3 жыл бұрын
I guess one thing they should’ve mentioned especially during brotherhood is explaining what the act when he was a kid actually did. The reason Noctis requires to actually go to the tombs of past kings and physically taking their weapons was due to this incident as a kid. Unlike Regis or Ardyn who just have the weapons of the past kings Noctis lost this ability and they say it’s due to an accident as a kid they never say specifically what the incident was but given the significance of the incident with the demon it’s likely that

1:41:48 weeeeell that's not really how it is. It is said in the Ardyn dlc that the majority of god's messengers were on the side of ifrit during the divine war, and that's why their name was removed from history. So it is very likely that Garuda (the One that help us, not that we fight) was on the side of Ifrit in the past. That's just a very little details but I love it

Now, full disclosure I'm only around 50 minutes in the video as time of writing, but just wanted to already comment and say I'm loving the work you're doing there. Seeing FFXV discussed in its entirety is overly complex, but necessary work and I'm so very glad someone's doing it, and doing it with talent, and some insights I can resonate with. I remember so many of my friends hated the game, while I actually liked it a lot. Part of it was that I played the PC version with all the enhancements it had over the years, but part of it was also expectations. They wanted the epic, and were disappointed. I wanted a road trip with the boys, and had so much to love about, and seeing these two clashing aspects discussed right from the start vindicate me a lot.

As someone who has beaten almost all the mainline ffs, I loved xv and I’m convinced that people would enjoy it if they gave it an honest chance, now that the royal edition packages all the main story beats. Also… I didn’t think Kingsglaive was so bad! It definitely wasn’t award winning but I thought it did it’s job well enough.

After beating 16 I decided I should give 15 a shot and mannn its horrible. Story is nothing and the entire "the best part is the interactions" which Ive heard from numerous people I find to just not be true in the slightest. Maybe its because I really think 16 did everything 15 tried to do with the characters to a much better level so going back it feels even worse than when it did prior but Im about 10 hours in and I actively dislike the game, probably wont continue.

My view of Luna was someone who always put duty first, no matter what, and never allowed herself to think about what _she_ wanted because of just how important that duty was. Her arranged marriage to Noctis, however, presented her with a rare and unforeseen situation where her duty and her desires _finally_ intersected in some way, but even that is ultimately something that she is denied.

This video was fantastic! I just watched all 2 hours and 40 minutes and I was constantly engaged the entire time. You structured it very well and did an excellent job balancing story summary with speculation and criticism. I think I finally understand what happened in this game now lol. Hopefully this video gets the recognition it deserves! On a side note, I interpreted the alternate ending in Episode Ignis as actually being the worse ending (if you ignore the idea of Bahamut destroying the world, presented in the book). Ignis only destroys Ardyn in the physical world, so he’s still alive in the realm of the gods until Noctis ever takes care of him. But as far as we know, Noctis never does that. So even though Noctis and his friends will have a better life in the present, Ardyn will eventually come back in a couple hundred or thousand years and make a new generation of people go through what Noctis and his crew had to go through. Essentially, Ignis just delayed the inevitable so he and his friends could live a happier life, leaving another group to deal with Ardyn in the future because he didn’t want to lose Noctis. With the original ending, Noctis died and it was sad, but he died to bring hope to the world. With the alternate ending, there’s no hope. Only temporary peace until the dread of Ardyn returning kicks in. There’s some ambiguity with them going to some of the old tombs in the ending montage, but it’s not clear if they’re going there to find a way to permanently kill Ardyn without losing Noctis or what. Like I said, it’s too ambiguous to be certain.

After playing the game (both vanilla and royal edition) including all of the DLCs, watching the film and the anime, as well as read the novel, I have to say the world of FFXV is exactly like what you described, it’s a beautiful and fascinating world with sophisticated and loveable characters but yet still manages to remind me every bit of missed potentials and multifaceted compromises due to its problematic development cycle. But in retrospect I realized that this flaw for me has subconsciously became the game’s biggest charm. Because it is delivered in a fragmented fashion, everything adding on it essentially becomes a new interpretation instead of the usual extension for a successfully told coherent story. And as players, we inherently know the game’s imperfect and the story’s unfinished, we become actively searching for new interpretations that satisfy our need to complete its story arc and character arcs, thus effectively making this process enjoyable and worthwhile. These fragmented experiences are perhaps a blessing in disguise rather than salt on wounds after all. Because it wouldn’t torture me so much to see Ardyn being mistreated so badly in his Episode if the original story has already completed his character arc. There are no interpretation in this way and I would not take this Episode as seriously as I did. But that being said, I really appreciate the effort put into this essentially FFXV lore induction video and is firmly convinced that this channel and this content deserves much more attention and recognition than it currently has, great work and thank you!

this is the second time i finished watching through this video and i appreciate the work you put into it immensely!! ff15 is the first ff game i played, somewhat intimidated by the franchise as a whole until a friend (a long-time fan) sat down and started the journey with me. we went through most of the additional media (brotherhood, kingsglaive, dlc) and i have to admit i was a little confused at some points in the game, even with the added background knowledge, but i fell so deeply in love with the characters and world that i went off and consumed even more media on my own (the prologue, dawn of the future, a king's tale, etc.). getting to watch everything in a condensed format here helped me connect some dots i previously missed and make sense of minor story beats that didn't land for me during the initial playthrough. i'm sure i'll come back to this video many times, because the way you talk about the game is so engaging! thank you for putting it all together!!

Adored this seriously thoughtful, well made, and extremely insightful video! I also really loved your intense homework-like deep dive into its history, film, and anime. When you mentioned in your video the sheer confusion and out-of-no-where moments that occur within the main plot that are mentioned/hinted at within these other media pieces, lmao, that was me, I WAS THAT PERSON DEEPLY CONFUSED-- but committed - to see my beloved boy-band to their end. Also, that insane, dream-like alternative ending where Iggy has the choice to "play along" and not give into the player's natural reaction to fight back in the Ignis' DLC-- what the freaking hell, haha. I had only beaten the game once through when it first released so the DLC stuff escaped me, so your insight as well as your attention to detail really helped me appreciate for everything I already knew-- and often didn't know. Thank you so very much for articulating my feelings about this game! Subscribed. : )

I'm coming in late and am only really learning of the details of these stories through waching this video, but that episode with the overweight kid had a lot of wasted potential. It had a prime opportunity for a want vs. need character arc. Like, the kid starts losing weight and trying to be more social to be the sort of person Noctis would wand to hang out with, but he falls off the horse when letters he writes back to the palace go unanswered (only VIP letters get through, maybe?), and he starts doing nothing again, and feeling more depressed than ever, until he overhears/sees in a chatroom that Noctis admires how much work Prompto puts into his work regime, and Prompto remembers he was feeling better inwardly while working hard, and realises self-improvement was its own reward, and gets back to it. Some time down the line, Noctis approaches him and asks if he can join in on his work-out regime, because while Noctis is a slim kid, he's not particularly energetic or strong, and the two build muscle and bond together.

15 was incredibly fun to play and the world is gorgeous but the storytelling is some of the worst I’ve ever experienced. None of the big moments really hit because they’ve not been earned, there’s so much context missing or things we should know just never gets explained. There was so much potential with the story as the lore and plot is genuinely every interesting. They should’ve halved the map size and had multiple maps and get rid of the endless fetch quests for a more linear experience but still with enough explanation.

I'll never understand the disproportionate amount of hate Kingsglaive gets. People just blindly hate on it but no one gives any actual reasons its bad. I liked the main cast, the action scenes were great and it had some of the best CGI I've ever seen in a movie. It was honestly the most complete and entertaining part of the entire FFXV experience and that's coming from someone who consumed all of it.

Final Fantasy XV is also cross-promoted in Assassin’s Creed Origins, in a side quest A Gift from the Gods. The side quest takes Bayek, the primary protagonist of the game, to tomb whose entrance has a pictogram wth Adryn and Noctis and the Roman numeral XV under a pictogram showing a clue to the puzzle needed to be solved. At the conclusion of the side quest Bayek witnesses Ardyn and Bahamut, and is rewarded with a sword based on the Ultima Blade, a shield based on one Noct and Gladio can equip, and a camel mount resembling a Chocobo called a Kweh.

you forgot to Talk about the logo change in the very end, which is a very important, emotional and impactful thing! I love that logo change (but don't want to spoil so I'm better going on here). besides, I don't think that the alternate ending from the novel cancels out the original games ending. The novel tells a story that is just as heavy and impactful as it is, because we know and have played the original story ending. The novel ending would not be so strong, emotional and intense if it wasn't for the original one, if we would not know and would not have experienced the heartbreaking alternative (=the game's ending).

Just adding a comment to make myself remember to watch this in the next week. I played this game but before release of so much dlc, so maybe 2/3rds of the content. I love Square Enix games though and to see someone devote over 2 and a half ours to explaining one is a real sign of someone who likes them even more than me. Hoping that once I have the requisite attention span watching this will make me revisit

I have to first explain that Final Fantasy is probably my favorite gaming series EVER, even above Super Mario, which is the only tattoo I have, to give some insight. When Final fantasy XV came along, I pre-ordered the collector's edition, as did my boyfriend. I watched my boyfriend play the beginning hour or so of XV and was very disappointed that square-enix decided to do away with turn-based combat. I mean, one of the reasons why I first loved Final Fantasy games was because JRPGs had become my favorite genre. I was angry that my favorite series was no longer turn-based. It seems like they cowtowed to popular demand for financial security or even gain and that felt like a slap in the face to myself as a die-hard fan. I stayed bitter. I didn't play XV for the first time until about 2 months ago. I finally bear it this week and am currently doing the end-game dungeons. I played on my PS5's online gaming - my collector's edition copy is still sealed in the original UPS box, 100% unopened. I loved this game. The story has a lot of missing pieces, but I was able to make sense of most from the dialogue that came from my completionist gameplay style. This game really gave me an emotional response to the characters that I haven't felt since Final fantasy 8. I didn't feel like any of these characters were duds. Loved them all!

Hi! I know this video is older, but I just started getting into the story of xv again. Considering the ending novel, I don't think it really changes the God's (mostly Bahamut's) intentions, as much as actually finally making it clear. In Pitioss it's shown Eos body housed the scourge, and had she stood in the underworld, if Ifrit never got her body out, then technically Baha could have had all the scourge in one place to cast Terraflare. This plan was ruined by Ifrit, and he needed to come up with a new course of action. The other astrals that did not agree with his ultimate plan, either didn't know about his true intention of destruction earlier, or couldn't do anything about it as their own lives would have been lost in going against him and killing him, like they did in the end. Only after seeing more of mankind's resilience and drive to live could they have changed their minds and sacrificed themselves. As for Luna's change of resolve.. I don't think it's hard to imagine that after being dead and waking up in a world full of daemons and eternal night, after following the divine plan, that she may question the God's intent for mankind. And this may not prove anything, but considering XV was supposed to follow FNC, where XIII was all about fighting fate and certain Gods' malicious intent, then it's not hard to imagine that the God's in this universe weren't all benevolent from the start. Think the story was just told poorly to begin with. Great video! loved the exposition! Thank you.

Mostly agree, though I don't quite think that Bahamut was always planning to nuke the star. He would do it if he felt it was necessary, or he just got tired of the BS. Of course, I still have to read the final novella, so that might change, have the video paused after the Luna chapter.

Bahamut didnt always plan to nuke the planet, he just resorted to it at the start of episode luna because Ardyn had grown too powerful for his original noctis plan to work out. The book explains how Bahamut presides over many worlds, and weeding one rotting one out of his vast garden makes a lot more sense to him than Gentiana and the other astrals who only preside over Eos.

Love the video! I want to add my two cents as well: About Ultros on Kingsglave monsters, given he doesn't speak (and he does according to Regis on King's tale) and he has more of a squid head, I think that is probably FF4's Octomammoth/Octokraken. As for the Knight wall, probably someone already pointed it out but those are probably a homage to FF7's Knights of the Round.

You missed the Duscae Demo content! How could you?! You should be ashamed of yourself. I'm ashamed for you. Seriously, though, I've been actively searching for a video just like this ever since Episode Ardyn was released. Right up until the time this current pandemic hit, to which I grew busy worrying about another, slightly more pressing matter. That matter aside, this video is everything I could've ever asked for. Well, aside from perhaps the order you feel would be best to consume all this content, and, far more egregiously, the highly essential Duscae Demo content. Letting that monumental transgression slide, however, I want to thank you so much for all the love, effort, and dedication that went into this video. It absolutely shines through for anyone even remotely interested in this sort of content. You know, I've consumed every last one of these pieces of FFXV content to some degree, excluding the novel. Yet despite Episode Aranea being my least anticipated DLC for FFXV's 2nd Season, it ended up being the only one I feel we really missed out on. I was sort of wishing Luna's Episode would take place before her death and flesh out her relationship with Noctis. Yet, based on what you've said here, it seems as though what we got only serves to detract from what we already had. I'd also hoped Episode Noctis would make a point to add on to the pre-existing finale: Complete with one final boss fight against Ardyn in the Beyond. You know, whilst also potentially revealing Bahamut's true intentions, which I'd assumed would be something better. Obviously, this wasn't the case either. Somehow this disappoints me a helluva lot more than the initial FFXV experience did. Still, it's nothing that can be changed any longer. Merely an interesting, albeit somewhat self-indulgent side note. Again, I truly appreciate all that went into this video, and I eagerly anticipate whatever you create next. Until then!

As a longtime fan of FInal Fantasy who was massively disappointed with the way Final Fantasy XV turned out I found this video so very interesting. I played through the "original" experience back on launch in 2016 before any of the major patches came out. I found the experience hollow and the story really lackluster. I just started thinking about it today and ended up finding this video. It's incredible how much the story was expanded over the years. While many things still fall flat due to other problems. Like Lunafreya not really getting a personality or character depth, for example. Along with the recurring problem that it never felt that Lunafreya and Noctis never really cared for each other due to us almost never seeing them interact in person. I can still appreciate that they at least tried to include her and make her more important to the overarching narrative. Thank you for this video. I was enjoying it the entire way through.

I actually really like the pacing of FFXV. I swallowed up the world whole and loved roaming around aimlessly. I feel like switching from the open world to a linear plot based experience works with the themes and can be harmony between story and gameplay. Noctis wants to roam and be prince but duty calls him to be king and the burden of the crown starts pushing him inexorably forward. And you can return to the sandbox, it’s done by going back in time which i felt like was noctis remembering the good old days before Altissia.

I feel... conflicted about the alternate ending. On the one hand, I did kind of wish the gang got a happier ending. On the other hand, I actually really respected the writers for (at least initially) comitting to a very bittersweet ending when Final Fantasy games tend to end on a fairly high note. However, I think the Lunafreya story would have made for an interesting spinoff, like a XV-2 or something. The story does kind of conflict with the very convicted Lunafreya we saw prior, but I don't think her having a crisis of faith as she learns and experiences more would necessarily be unbelievable. As for the lack of chemistry between Noctis and Lunafreya, I definitely agree. I think a lot of it was due to them almost never being shown interacting with each other. We are TOLD that they love each other, but unlike many other Final Fantasy romances (such as Tidus and Yuna, or Zidane and Garnet), we don't get to see the relationship developing as the game progresses, nor do we really see the characters' devotion to each other outside of just them doing their duty (think Snow and Sarah in XIII. Their relationship is similarly established before the start of the game, and what we do see of them together is largely in flashbacks, but we see Snow fighting to save her, which better drives the point home that he loves her). Lunafreya in particular--largely because she doesn't get a lot of screentime and suffers HEAVILY from being more of a plot device than a fleshed-out character--never really shows that she is doing anything because she loves Noctis, just that she's doing what she must because destiny. It's a shame because it sounds like there were the makings of an interesting character with Lunafreya, but those ideas just never made it into the final game.

Wow...I'll be honest, after hearing that book summary, I'm actually so incredibly glad that most of the cut content never saw the light of day in the game itself. I genuinely hate the vast majority of these story retcons and I'm honestly fine with the idea of pretending that the Dawn of the Future novel never existed. Aranea's DLC sounds like it could have been a fun addition to the game, but the rest of this just sounds terrible to me. FFXV may be a heavily flawed game, but I was and still am happy with the ending that the game gave us.

He does kind of misread Bahamut's motivations. Bahamut is doing the Teraflare plan because Ardyn's bucking of his fate has made the original ending now impossible. If you look at Bahamut throughout the game, he acts as if everything, every fate on the planet is preordained. In the first timeline it is all going according to his plan, the light burns out the starscourge, then Noctis transports to the afterlife to completely kill Ardyn. However with Ardyn now being too powerful for the ring to deal with, Bahamut returns to his old standby, FLARE it. It is a reframing of the old war, but I tend to actually like it quite a bit. There was always this idea that the Gods didn't give three craps about humanity, or better said, a lot of them did not. So Bahamut basically wiping the planet and starting over I don't think is a massive change in characterization.
@DevilHunter1994
@DevilHunter1994 2 жыл бұрын
@@bishopcruz Wait, when exactly did Ardyn overcome his fate and become too powerful for the ring? I know there's the ending of Episode Ardyn where he refuses to play along with Bahamut's plan and tries to kill Noctis in their final battle instead of just allowing himself to die, but even if that's the case, Noctis beating Ardyn anyway, despite his efforts to fight against his fate, is still an option that is entirely on the table as far as I'm aware. In fact, wanting to kill Noctis in their final duel was how I always read Ardyn's intent in the original game. After all, if he wanted Noctis to kill him, why put up a fight at all? We could just skip the whole final battle, Ardyn could let Noctis kill his physical body, and then Ardyn could just wait in the great beyond to eventually be released from his torment with the power of the ring. He didn't do that though. To me it always seemed like the gods expected Ardyn to lose to Noctis when they eventually had their showdown. Ardyn meanwhile heard this plan and was like: "So that's your endgame huh?...Okay. I'll humor you. I'll let your little "Chosen King" acquire all the power he needs. Hell, I'll even help him get it, but when your chosen one is all good and ready to fulfill your cute little divine plan...I'm going to destroy him while you watch. Then when your savior is lying dead in a pool of his own blood, and the world you created is forever trapped in darkness, you'll know that betraying me and leaving me to rot was the worst mistake you ever made. I'm better than this brat you've shown your favor to, and when this is all over, EVERYONE will know it." Then of course chapter 14 happens, and well...Ardyn was wrong. Despite Ardyn throwing everything he possibly could at him, Noctis does prove himself, overcomes every challenge and ultimately comes out on top in their duel. Then he uses the power of the ring to finish the job. Bahamut planning to use Tera Flare just because Ardyn isn't going along 100% with his plan feels kind of unnecessary, at least at this stage. Now if Noctis should actually lose to Ardyn, then okay. Fair enough. Go to plan B. Nuking the planet when there's still every chance that Noctis could still win though doesn't really seem to add up.
@bishopcruz
@bishopcruz 2 жыл бұрын
@@DevilHunter1994 But that's not the story exactly. According to the novel Ardyn when he "defies fate" basically keeps collecting more and more starscourge demonic power. At that point Bahamut thought that the crystal no longer had enough power to defeat Ardyn, so he went for plan B. The original Chapter 14 is apparently Ardyn agreeing with his fate and basically leading Noctis to eventually kill him.
@DevilHunter1994
@DevilHunter1994 2 жыл бұрын
@@bishopcruz If that's what the book is suggesting, then it really does seem like the novel and game just outright contradict each other. Ardyn putting up such a huge fight in chapter 14 makes no sense if all he wants to do is die. It makes even less sense with the expanded chapter 14 in Royal Edition, since all the extra boss fights in that version would accomplish nothing except delaying Noctis, thus making it take longer for Ardyn to finally find peace. Worse yet, if Noctis was somehow defeated before reaching Ardyn in any of these early fights, then Ardyn would be dooming himself to an endless life of eternal darkness. Why bother taking that risk? Better to just impale himself on Noct's sword and wait in the beyond for his salvation. With the exception of Ifrit, (because he's already contaminated with the scourge and therefore needs to die) all the fighting in chapter 14 only really makes sense if Ardyn is earnestly trying to kill us.

I think the part I realized how deeply flawed the game's priorities were was when Lunafreya's death scene, a character who is basically a non-entity in the story, is treated as the most dramatic thing ever while Ignis being blinded happens entirely off camera and we're just told about it. The fact that they took a major plot event about one of the main characters of the game out of the story so they could sell it to you again later only made it worse.

Kingsglaive is my guilty pleasure, I watch it from time to time when I'm bored. The anime, watched it once for context but would probably never watch it again, the game itself and its DLCs, absolutely love them. I first started FFXV like 2 years later after its initial release, I played the Windows Edition back in 2018 (currently sitting at 160 hours on Steam) and I couldn't understand why people was so pissed about the game, I started it without knowing anything (nor story or development related), so I didn't know that I was playing a much completed version than what was initially released on PS4, then I googled how bad it was and I felt lucky for coming across the game much later. I bought the game again (the Royal Edition) like 3 years ago for my PS4 and currently playing it on my new PS5 (that I bought for FFXVI, currently at 100 hours), and I'm thinking about getting The Royal Edition for my Xbox SS as well. Loved both FFXV and XVI.
