Well sorry you had this experience, and I did not see your video before buying from them. But I had a different experience, I bought an SX-70, and the camera had an issue, I sent them several emails with my photo results, and they responded promptly. I found and bought another SX-70 at a local store that was broken, and I sent them back the one I bought from them for a refund and the one broken that I bought. They refunded me the money from the original SX-70, refurbished the broken one, and modified it to accept 600 films (I paid for the refurbished service of course). When I received the refurbished camera, there was a checklist with all the tests they performed and replacement parts (about 5 parts they replaced), and the camera is working fine, plus the skin and cleaning make it looks great. I just want to share my experience, maybe they improved their service (your video is 2 years old since I am posting this note), but I am just sharing one experience, I cannot have a broader opinion. So what happened with your camera?, I heard that Brooklyn Camera is great, and if I need a service in the future I will try them. Thanks for the video, and all the best

i had some issues with Brooklyn camera! I sent my camera back 2 times with the same problem. finally they fixed it, but in between there were many expenses with shipping, wasted film, and a lot of time

I'm very familiar with this cameras. At least two of the things you showed in the video (film not ejecting and that horrible screeching sound) are 100% an issue with the camera and not the user. For the light leaks they can always blame the film or the user.

Thank you for the info! I tried looking it up at first for a while and couldn't find my specific issue. I'm completely new to the SX-70. I went with these guys to have a refurbished copy but obviously that was a mistake.

I have 2 SX-70 models, one made in 1974 (model1) and the other a Sonar job made in 1978. Got both within the last 3 months from eBay for actually reasonable prices and had a local guy CLA both of them. Other than that, they were untouched when I got them and they work great. I’m not even a photographer, I’ve always just wanted one since I was a kid, I’m now 55. All that being said, I just ordered a supposedly completely refurbished SLR 680 from Retrospekt before I saw your video and now I’m scared shitless !!! The thing got shipped today, so we’ll see what happens when I get it. It’s already a 600 camera, so no 600 mod was needed or done to it. Let’s hope they’re true to their word and it’s a full refurb and not just a polish and resell. If you care to hear how I make out, I’ll certainly let you know. Good video, thanks. Sorry you got hosed, I hope I have better luck. Oh yea, I live in Canada so that means I paid a fortune for this thing that’s coming...... Cheers.

@@eac1104 I got it shortly after I posted my comment and It looked and smelled beautiful. But, literally one pack of film later, like 6 hours, the auto focus locked up and was inoperable. I was pissed !!! I contacted customer service and described the problem and they asked me to send a video of the problem which I did. I was told it needed to be sent back for repair or replacement, which I did the following day. After a few weeks I got the camera back repaired and was excited all over again. I opened it up, put a empty pack in it to test it and it all worked great, until I closed it up. When I closed it, the spring popped out if the top piece that you pull on to open the camera. I was shocked and infuriated and that was within 15 minutes of me unwrapping it. I looked at it carefully, bent the spring back close to how it should be and reattached it. Seems good now, but I’m super careful with it. It works good, but all my indoor shots come out dark, especially the dark tones of wood and what have you. I’ve been in a couple of the shots and It looks like I’ve been on vacation and have the best tan of my life and that’s with the flash on. Obviously a learning curve here, but the instructions say there’s no need to really fool with the exposure wheel as it’s factory set or something like that. Also, they put the value of the camera on the invoice when they returned it instead of saying repaired item and I had to pay 120 bucks in duty cause I live in Canada. Now I’m over a grand what with the original cost, the return shipping and the duty !!! So, I have a very sour taste in my mouth, but it looks great just sitting there in display with my other ones. I’m gonna try moving the exposure wheel to see if that helps with the dark tones and hopefully I get better results. Otherwise, I’ve got myself a very expensive souvenir and I’m not sending it back again. Sorry about the book I just wrote, but I had to get it out. Cheers !!!

If your camera is having a hard time dispensing then I'd get a screw driver or a chopstick and push down the metal bar at the back left corner of the film holder. I had the same problem with my slr-690 and that fixed it.

I bought an sx-70 from them and got it last week. I am having literally the exact same issues. Film is jamming and light leaks like crazy. The light sensor is also janky and not calibrated correctly. I reached out and the only thing they told me was to clean the rollers. Not sure what to do at this point. I’m still in the return window but it feels like they are stalling to get me past the time window.

It's funny, on their website they go over the top in describing how their conversions are better than every other conversion, and I immediately got scam vibes, it just seemed like the language of people completely full of it. So I typed them into KZfaq and this vid came up. Thanks, brother.

Thank you for sharing! Retrospect should be ashamed. They need to exchange it for a camera that works if they were any good. Sorry you had that experience! I would be upset too! I was going to buy two sx70s from them (one modified), but decided to buy elsewhere based on this video and your Reddit post.

I feel your pain on this and it sucks that all this happened but the only thing is is that 24 hours is a perfectly reasonable amount of time for a company to respond.

Ship it to Brooklyn Film camera to get it fixed. They also repair sx-70s for around $120 to $180.

Don’t sell your camera dude. Whilst you’ve spent a lot, there are plenty of people out there who can sort that camera out for you. I live in the U.K., but Brooklyn film camera are superb, give them a shout and let them know the problem you’ve had and see if they can hook you up.

Dude Retrospekt is NOT it, I bought an SLR680 and had the same issues you had, I luckily was on them with emails and instead of getting it “looked at” I just returned it so I don’t go over the 14 day window. I would have had an inconsistent camera for $740!

They lost me about a week ago when then kept failing to accept my debit card. Why I was going to buy a 660 autofocus for $150 in the first place idk. Just bought the same one pretty clean for $55. I agree great website but you tend to loose sight that you are still buying a 30-40 year old piece of equipment

I came across this video in my recommended, you can see from my page I actively shoot instant film. I have to ask where you got the film, I’ve had awful experiences with Amazon, the film pods with the chemicals exploded and stuck to each other not allowing the film to be pushed out. Ruined the whole pack and had similar results as you. I do understand your frustration tho, I would be too, but check the back of the film if the pods exploded. It’ll be like a white or blue residue on the lip of the back of the film.

@@EgdeFilms not expired but improperly stored, Amazon has it in awful conditions and in extreme temperatures that can make the film pods explode. Target is okay for the most part but for sure Amazon I’ll never buy instant film from again. Buying straight from Polaroid is always the best bet. Not as convenient as the other retailers but you’ll get the best results.

@@EgdeFilms listen to that man! buy directly from polaroid. they even give discounts on higher quantities and have a reward system for returning buyers (I already saved more than 300€). here in europe the parcels arrive within 2-4 days and i never had a problem once.

@@rzgbrmpf37 Yes, buy from Polaroid. You receive fresh Made film in good packaging. Once I got 2 from Amazon and they were not good. I had a similar problem with Instax Wide from Amazon. Due to bad packaging the pods where probabely damaged resulting in undeveloped parts.

That is such a shame, and I’m sorry to hear this. They won’t last long if they continue like this. They are in a position of power in terms of promising something that the customers have to trust, and this power is tempting to exploit. If they do, I pray they’ll be exposed and close the doors

The ejection problems can be fixed by slightly bending down the so called pick arm .

@@EgdeFilms I bought in a Berlin camera store some months ago a "new" SX-70 from Mint and it is 100% operational, it works great! You can tell they did a thorough overhaul on the camera. I totally recommend them! ( I also heard Mint costumer service is very good).

Nope. For returns I think it was like 15 days and when you use the warranty they said it was fine. Did you watch the video?

Wow I know this is a older video but I contacted Polaroid and they just told me if I can not find film from another company the SX70 and 600 film is done anyway. I own a couple of Polaroids and its looking like film companies are just giving up on the older style films. Thank god you can still get 35mm and 120.
