Yeah it's nuts. Those serves were completely unreturnable for these level players their only chance is if it's out.

@@SoloPerICommenti In pro tournaments, serves at around that speed (over 200 kmh) can only be returned with luck, if the opponent is placed correctly, guesses the right trajectory, etc. The human body simply can't respond that quickly, nor move that quickly. The challenge was fixed! Scam, I tell ya!

@@ZarkWonderbread look, I was playing at a pretty low level, but my serve was around 175km/h flat even if it was not really accurate (speed measured a few times). But when I was directing it to the right place it was a problem even for players much better than me... just it was not happening very often, lol. The guy was hitting some bombs that were also very well directed. Not sure if he can do it in a game as well, but many of those were aces even in the ATP circuit

Exactly. I've been top ranked university player and I've been courtside watching the #1 national player. His serves are so big that I would struggle getting any returns. However he played on ATP tour and could barely win any sets.

A guy who is 340 in the world (even a guy who is semi-pro) can serve just as well as a top 100 player. Just don’t necessarily have the consistency or to back it up on big points

yeah. really gives perspective on the way guys like Agassi and Federer have been able to smack these sorts of serves casually straight back past the server for winners like it was nothing

Look at some of the results players with these rankings are pulling off against top players. I know people say they have slowed down courts since the 90s but players are more athletic and there is more depth. Unless you have a strong tennis federation behind you or some serious money the biggest challenge is qualifying for events that reward ATP points. Skill, talent and athleticism are a start but consider that Nick Kyrgios and Andy Murray both rely on wildcards for most tournaments they enter which just makes it even harder for lower ranked players to qualify for ATP events. Compare tennis players to athletes from team sports and they barely have a chance to compete. Most top soccer clubs have almost as much depth as the entire ATP tour.

@@MrRadiantMan these things are subjective but imo Agassi was way better than Djokovic. Djokovic gets more back, maybe, but the way Agassi would just cream 200+ km/h serves straight back past the server as if it was no big deal ... no-one has done that before or since, imo

In a best-out-of-three sets match, you'd have 48 chances to win that point, whereas in the case, you get one shot. To put it in perspective, I think 12% of men and 3% of women here also have a good chance of winning €1000 if they had 48 tries, if you also consider the guy has to serve 48 times without fault :).

What is really funny is that otto is about 176 in the world and even top club players are not likely to win a point. Forget about getting a point off serena we don't have the placement spin or power she could give the doubles lines and no fault serve to an club player and then they may get a point or two but a game not likely

I got to play against some 200 kph serves as youth player, but all of them on clay courts. The difference on hard must be massive.

I think you would have to be much older than high school to even have the practice necessary to return that serve. At least 25ish with over 10 years professional training, I would assume.

I once talked to a player who was ranked 1000 or so. The main difference between a player who is ranked 1000 or top 100 or top 10 is mostly mental. Skill wise there is little difference. The top 1000 player falters on the big points like 30-40 (double fault, unforced error, etc) and often cant consitently play well in consecutive matches. The top 100 player wont fall apart under pressure and is more consistent but wont make the spectacular play when it really counts. Anyway the main point is that you cant tell the difference between a top 10 and top 1000 player from a practice session because skill is not the main thing that separates them

@@eddyecho that might be true, but my point is how amazing professional athletes are compared to regular folk. Their skill and physical ability are mind blowing.

It's not just mental. There is a huge difference in skill level between the top 5 and say someone ranked 50th. It's why top players can win matches 6-0 6-0. They are better at serving, returning, general agility, stamina etc etc. It's the same principle that made Usain Bolt unbeatable for years, and why he destroyed the competition. It's not (just) mentality. The top athletes are clearly much better. Due to the way that skill is distributed (a normal distribution on a bell curve) the difference between #1 and #5 (number one is much better) is greater than the difference between #45 and #50 (these guys are closely matched with each other, but much worse than the top guys). If the top 50 were all pretty similar, and their results depended on mentality, you wouldn't have someone staying at #1 in the world all year.

Doesn't that kinda defeat the whole purpose? The biggest challenge in facing a good server is trying to read where they go.
