Return of Reading T-1

For the first time in over 31 years, a former Reading Railroad T-1 ventured along former Reading rails, with 50 coal hoppers in tow on Tuesday, April 26, 2022. As part of a series of test runs, returning the long-dormant 4-8-4 Northern to service, the Reading & Northern Railroad calculated that 50 empty hopper cars equaled around 20 loaded passenger cars, to simulate the load of upcoming excursions on the railroad that #2102 will be pulling.
On an overcast Spring day, the locomotive and consist made a spirited run from Reading, PA's Outer Station complex to Jim Thorpe, PA, and return. The locomotive sounded great, like it hasn't missed a beat, and after a long restoration process, the locomotive is well on its way to being ready for the first excursions in May. In Louisiana, close to New Orleans. Way back up in the forest in the cedar trees, there stood a log cabin made of earth and wood where there lived a country boy named Johnny Benjamin Goode. He never got to school to read or write so well, but he could play the guitar just like a ring from a bell. He used to carry his guitar in a gunnery sack and sit beneath the trees by the railroad track. The engineers would see him sitting in the shade where he was strumming with the rhythm that the drivers made. The people passing by, would often listen and say, "my my, what that little country boy could play"!? His Mama told him, "Someday you will be a great man and you will be the leader of a whoppin' band, with people coming to you from miles around, to hear you play your music when the sun goes down. Hey?...Maybe someday your name'll be in lights, saying.... "Johnny B. Goode tonight". Go Johnny! Go boy! GO! - And the rest was history! 👏😆

@@garryferrington811 Indeed. My apologies if I point out the obvious, but that 4-beat tempo signifies the pistons making a full circuit (back and forth) and the wheels making one full revolution.

It's the authentic Reading hooter that the T-1's wore in freight service. Very distinctive.

And it even had a caboose which they now call push car because that is where the conductor stands and reports as they push back

Even if they are empty, 50 cars, that's like a full size freight train, so wouldn't this almost qualify as revenue service, even if it is just a test run?

It's technically a mix of both - but it's a test for the locomotive, so that's what I went with. :)

If it's during a major trip like this, absolutely. 100%. If you're filming a freight train on a random Tuesday/Wednesday, and nobody else is there, then go for it. But if it's during a steam event/excursion, then definitely do NOT try it.
