Return of the Jedi: Deleted original edits from August 1982 by Director Richard Marquand.
Part 1
Deleted cut featuring the Emperor ordering the Death Star to turn its laser on the moon of Endor.
Part 2
Extended cut featuring a longer Rebel hanger scene with Lando, Han, Chewbacca, Luke and Leia saying their goodbyes. (The matte painting of the Falcon had yet to be added to the background).
Part 3
Videomatics of the attack on the second Death Star (parts without sound) intercut with Moff Jerjerrod ordering Imperial countermeasures. (Ben Burtt reads Ackbar's lines).

I like this ending so much more. It seems to bring just that tad bit more to the suspense felt during the final scenes.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I prefer this cut to what we got, especially the hanger sequence. It actually showed the characters' apprehension and concern for one another. The Death Star's threat towards Endor also raised the stakes.

Reckon you can see Prune Face going up the ramp just after Lando says "Not a Scratch!" You can see his camouflaged hooded cloak. You see the Dresselian with the dark cloak in the actual film.

Interesting. Not sure if these scenes would have enhanced the film any further. I do like the idea of Palpatine blowing the Ewoks up. One decision of his I could go along with!

The rebels having a time limit to destroy the Death Star before it destroys a planet would be too similar to what happened in A New Hope. The Ewoks were added to make a political message regarding the Vietnam War, so if you hate the Ewoks, you can thank George Lucas for focusing too much on political messaging.

@@justinmadrid8712 Hi there. I was aware of the Vietnam analogy from an interview with Lucas. Stating that tbe Superior US was held in check by a technically inferior force. I see no problem with that. STAR TREK has been doing that successfully for decades without putting today's biased slant into everything. STAR WARS was originally going to have trained Wookies fly the rebel ships to destroy the DEATH STAR TM, but Lucas altered the story (maybe Gary Kurtz). I have no beef with the concept, but bloody teddy bears? I was 16 when Jedi came out. It was okay, but bogged down on Endor and Han Solo acted more like Starbuck on Battlestar Galactica. At 16 I was not impressed with the Ewoks, although I would give clemency to them at a firing squad over Jar Jar. Jar Jar!

@@spitfiremark1a768 Yes I have no real issue with political allegories either. The problem is, when you prioritize political messages over telling a good story, it almost always ends up hurting the story. Your focus MUST be on telling a good story first, and political messages should be more of an afterthought. George Lucas was told multiple times that the Ewoks defeating the Empire with rocks was a stupid idea. But George Lucas INSISTED that the Ewoks remain in the script, because he was dead set on his political message. As you can see, we got teddy bears killing stormtroopers with rocks. I believe in women's rights just as much as you. I believe women should be able to do whatever they want, whenever they want, and wherever they want. But the Feminist political messaging has destroyed multiple franchises for the past 5 years. Because their main focus is on girl power messaging, rather than telling a good story. I have not seen Star Trek, but I have heard that the old Star Trek did political allegories very well. So perhaps it is the exception to the general rule.

@@justinmadrid8712 Original TREK and most of TNG is really good along with the first 6 films. There are some strong messages in TREK but it is not in your face like in so much new sci fi that has to push "the message". Film is replete with great female characters. We can state Ripley in Alien/s and of course Princess Leia or Sara Connor in sci fi. They are good without us being told that they are good. They are written well and acted with sincerity. They don't weigh 8lb wet and take down men weighing 250lb. I only really watch STAR WARS and TESB. Not really into anything else connected with it. I have been disappointed with most of it, although I am watching Kenobi with my son and am, to be quite honest enjoying it.

These scenes would have made the movie much better. It gives things a lot more weight and urgency. Palpatine is enhanced. The stakes are higher. Gives Luke a lot more reason to take out the Emperor. I’ve never really liked this idea that taking out Palpatine here is a dark side move. It’s clearly a defensive move as it’s designed to save lives. These scenes make it much more obvious and maybe that’s why they were cut. But if Lucas was going for a movie where it’s a foregone conclusion that the good guys win and there’s nothing really to worry about, then taking these scenes out makes that narrative work better. It’s just a weaker narrative.

Does Ian McDiarmid ever do a bad take? For me Palpatine is the most complete character in Star Wars and that is due to Ian, superbly acted. I for one am glad he came back, his final death was meh, don’t use Force Lightning it always backfires! Damaged himself in ROTS, turned Vader against him ROTJ, killed himself using it in RoS.

I think this version of the hanger scene is very corny compared to the version we got. The bit with Luke and Leia interrupting the conversation just to say good luck is pretty silly to me. I also think the bit with Death Star 2 trying to destroy Endor seems like an unnecessary attempt to add more steaks to a film that had enough as is. Plus it would have made the parallel to A New Hope too obvious. While I like the idea of the Empire being conflicted with itself, I can't help but feel this was not the right time to establish something like this. It should have been done in Empire if you ask me.

Was watching the Red Letter Media commentary summary of the special editions and saw 1:43 (middle of the frame to the left). Looks like the Jedi Starfighter. I wanted to know if it was in the original film, (pre edits) looks like it was.

these could all still be canon, probably in other media, or as references for other media... it feels like it was just cut so the movie would have a better flow... because there's not much change in the story whether it's in or not.... like the cut yoda's landing on dagobah in ROTS....
