Truly magnificent song and performance. What a heady year 1977 was. I’d be very interested to have heard ELP tackle this in their own way. I can almost hear it as the feel and approach of the players is very similar to what we hear on eg Tarkus - no surprise given the jazz roots and chops involved. Emerson tackling that moog solo, Palmer jazzing the drums, Lake underscoring the bass and singing the vocals in his hallmark resonant style. We’ll never know …..

Anyone know what snare drum Gerry Brown was using at this time? That sound has been haunting me since i first heard it...

Is the same Gerry Brown playing on the live ‘quiet afternoon’ on the I wanna play for you album? If so then i have to agree it’s an incredible snare sound. In fact the drumming on that version of quiet afternoon is still I think some of the best playing I’ve heard.
