Return to Monkey Island is a game about going on an epic island-spanning journey in order to construct a mop. Also there's probably some pirate stuff, I guess.

This game is my first memory as a gamer my dad bought a new Pc with a Sound blaster in 1991 and a beautiful box with a cardboard game disk with a funny anti-piracy system. @@chupathingy6626 Also i remember when Sips (when he still did youtube) played adventures. Even games i like (like MI, DOTT) made for really poor videos. With him running back and forth to the same locations trying to find the one thing that got him moving one step further. here is something sad on a meta level. The main theme in this game is the joy of sharing a story. After the game was announced on April 1st the lead designer started sharing screen shots of the game on his blog, the negative reaction to the art style got so bad that he out right told the fans "I no longer find joy in sharing." And stopped talking about the game in general.

Instead of went full retard and malding, Ron should've instead calmly said the reason why he choose this art style for the new game and do some PR talk to the audience about how he will discuss adding a classic graphics update in the future. that will surely calm some people there.

@@ChronoSquare the other video probably left out Monkey Island 3-5 since they had terrible 3D graphics (which I can attest to) and the story (I’m told) kind of went off the rails. 1 and 2 are the ones most people think of. I actually like the art style, it's reminiscent of different aspects of the earlier games. It's got the DOS saturation from the first 2, with the proportions referencing Curse, the hair is very Escape, and the overall aesthetic is new which is basically par for the course here. I also like the return to form here, I really didn't like the WASD 3D thing the last two games had going. But the literal child in this one is the miss.

And as Jon says, sometimes puzzles are really convaluted but i still wanna see the rest of the game. Ideally there is a built in hints system. Idk how good it is in this, Jon doesn't seem to use it. Generally the idea of devs always getting their games (balance) right and the pseudo religious believe that you should never stray of the Dev-given path is ridculous. I'm not afraid of modding or cheating to get past some issues or simply change the balance or remove features games to enjoy it more. Interesting attempt to revive the series. One of the games (Not the last one) had a "twist ending" where it just revealed a family at an amusement park, thus the opener and framing device. Things like the "swordmaster" dueling is a callback to the games where "swordfights" were determined by wordplay and punsmithing. You actually had to go around collecting proper insults, jokes, etc to use against your opponents. Probably what lets me down the most about it however is just the Ren and Stimpy inspired artstyle they have going on though. It's very... tonally off for me. Monkey Island was never really a 'Gross Out" series or anything surreal so much as just lighthearted and comedic. So it feels really weird to have so much of the game doing that sort of thing.

As a 30 year veteran of the series, instantly enamoured of Michael Land's score on my old Amiga 500, I found this installment of the series to be surprisingly so-so. On a par with Monkey Island 4, for those that have played that one. The art style is kinda off, too many built-in hint systems and many "you're old and out of touch" jokes. I already know that I'm old and out of touch. I bought this game for nostalgia, not self-pity, but that's what the writing seemingly keeps striving for. I *love* the old Lucas Arts style point 'n' clicks, they are the bread and butter of my gaming life, but I'd give this game a 6/10. Mostly for the voice acting (apart from the new LeChuck) and Michael Land's score.

i just beat this on hard mode, going back in on easy mode to get a couple achievements. it is sad that you haven't played the other games though, like half the jokes are gonna FLY over your head.

I get that the girl with the anchor is supposed to be funny (and maybe interesting for some) but she nearly put me to sleep too. Edit: Also, I really don´t appreciate almost puking from that Scurvydog and "not ketchup". Guess I shouldn´t be watching this near midnight, while sick. :/

The maggots got me. For reasons I won't get into I have a particularly strong aversion.

I think it’s because it released this week, so it’s more likely to be included in the search algorithm. It could definitely lead to him playing the others later!
