It is important to fully understand what the finance company will accept as fair wear and tear and to make plans to inspect your vehicle thoroughly well in advance of the car return date to ensure you have plenty of time to deal with any issues such as repairing scratches and scuffs, cleaning the interior, refurbishing alloy wheels and much more. Make sure your car is looking it's best when you return it at the end of your lease deal.
The BVRLA Fair Wear & Tear Guide provides information to drivers about looking after a leased or financed vehicle so that end of contract charges can be avoided and, secondly, to provide an industry-wide, accepted standard that defines fair wear and tear on vehicles when they are returned at the end of a lease or finance agreement.
Fair wear and tear occurs when normal usage causes deterioration to a vehicle. It is not to be confused with damage caused as a result of a specific event or series of events such as impact, inappropriate stowing of items, harsh treatment, negligent acts or omissions.

This is very useful. Have never leased a vehicle and forewarned is forearmed. The terms are very fair. Also a good warning for people who don’t take care of their car.

Nowadays some of the lease companies charges are cheaper than repairers but always check’ Just look for a local smart repair firm. 👍

Hi Jim. So what's the situation with regard to servicing? I understand that the lease company will require proof that the vehicle has been serviced as per manufacturers recommendations but does this mean main dealer only or can I use a trusted and probably cheaper local independent? Do I have the choice or is it main dealer only? Perhaps this varies between lease companies? Thanks :-)

Ok, good question. Although the terms of your warranty mean that you can often use an authorised independent to carry out servicing using approved parts, your lease agreement may not. Basic advice is don’t assume anything, check your individual lease agreement and make sure you get the answer you’re looking for in writing if it’s unclear in the lease agreement 👍

Hello again Jim. I hope you don't mind if I ask another (possibly daft) question please? Is there a neat way to seamlessly dovetail the ending of one lease with the start of a new one? What I am trying to avoid is either an overlap of old and new or, worse, having a gap where I have no car at all for weeks or months. This might be relatively easy to avoid if the old and new contracts are with the same lease company but the odds are that the best deal will be with an entirely different lessor. Add into the mix that many current lease deals require a factory order rather than being a stock vehicle and it becomes easy to see that managing the timings could be problematic...................or I am unnecessarily complicating the process? Thank you.

Hi John, if you use the same company it’s a piece of cake, you just need to make sure you order early. Usually the person delivering your car also takes the old one away - simple. If you’re using different companies it’s still usually fairly easy as long as you order the new one in good time, the worst happens and there is a delay your existing lease can often be extended for a month or two without much of a problem. 👌

@@DefinitelyNotAGuru That's very helpful. I hadn't even considered the possibility of a short contract extension. I suppose that I simply assumed the contract term was rigidly fixed with no flexibility. Thanks :-)

Quick question about alloy scuffs. With it being 50mm scuff on the circumference, is that totaled together scuffs? So if you had two 40mm scuffs, it would pass. Cheers

Hi Jim, I've got a 08 mini estate which is with our mechanic and has been for 2 weeks, power keeps dropping as your driving it but he can't get to bottom of what is causing it, any thoughts?

Petrol or diesel??? Could well be a blocked fuel filter or fuel pump issue; if it’s a diesel I suppose maybe a DPF issue, although that usually throws up an engine management light I think. I’m no mechanic.

@@angelaabbott6450 ok so best guess is fuel filter, fuel lines, or fuel pump issue. Outside chance that maybe it’s the DPF but as I say I’m not a mechanic. Good luck 🤞

Good question, it’s happened to me twice. As long as it’s mega clean you’ll be fine. It just makes it harder for them to find minor panel imperfections.
