Hello, It looks great. I like how you use options that are not seen here where I live so much anymore. Making something new out of something old is is always a possibility that can be less expensive than buying new furniture. Respect for you for admitting that you made a mistake. Gathering experience through mistakes is a part of life and is surely in handwork something that will always bring you new knowledge for the future. You may not always need to remove the old varnish completely, but should surely always sand it down very well before painting. It can be an advantage to test paint in advance on a part that you will not be using. Another possibly is to try painting on a hidden spot that will not be seen later. 👍 to you and stay safe.
