Rev. Dr. Charles A. Tindley (1851-1933) is considered the "Father of Gospel Music". He composed many Christian hymns, including "I Shall Overcome", which was the basis for the now-famous anthem for the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, "We Shall Overcome".

Jessyca Stansbury- McCargo Have you heard of Myrtle Mills Tindley? She is the niece of Charles A. Tindley and she is actually my great-grandmother. She passed in ‘13.

Beautifully done! I really liked the woman who met Tindley when she was 6. How did you know about her and did you meet and interview her? This is a wonderful tribute to Dr. Tindley,

Hello, yes, I had the privilege of speaking with her at length. I did not however, do the original interview. I spoke with the interviewer, and the original singer of the first song and was allowed to use both. My great grandmother and Dr. Tindley's mother were sisters. Once they knew who I was an why I wanted it, they gave their consent and blessing.

I'm having a tough time finding a good biography of Charles Tindley, which really surprises me. Anyone got a recommendation?

John, a very good source can be found in several places. Firstly, the Tindley Temple in Philadelphia has a "historical" department. Secondly, the Museum of African American History and Art in Washington, DC. ( All of his papers, photos, glasses, copies of some of his hymns in his own handwriting) and of course, the Calvin B. Taylor Museum in Berlin, Maryland. I was born and reared 1 mile from where (cousin) Tindley was born.
