Brian Wolfe became the first to run 7s in the 1/4-mile and 4s in the 1/8-mile with his awesome Godzilla-powered 1993 Mustang LX Coupe. Brian takes us through the last couple of weeks and tells us what it took to get there. And.. What's in the future!

I sure wish this was an opposed-valve Cammer instead - ya know a big bore/large valve/Siamese bore version of the 6.2 like it should have been. There was so much more performance potential in the existing Boss platform than this super-basic Godzilla.
@brianwolfe2993
@brianwolfe2993 Жыл бұрын
You should build a 6.2, it would be great, would love to follow the build and install. That would show three great current Ford platforms, Coyote, Godzilla and the 6.2L.
@BC08
@BC08 Жыл бұрын
@@brianwolfe2993 Unfortunately Ford never got around to producing that siamese-bore Boss I would love to have played with. I know you weren’t a fan of two spark plugs (works fine for new Hemi) but a Boss 6.2-based 6.9 with siamese bores, 4.22” bores, 2.25/1.70” valves and the intake port path the 6.2 already had should have made the GOAT domestic V8 platform. I understand why you guys went the way you did for truck duty - sub-5000 rpm power is probably close and Godzilla is smaller and heads are (probably) cheaper to make - but dang Boss could and should have been so much more.
@brianwolfe2993
@brianwolfe2993 Жыл бұрын
@@BC08 But the rason it never took off, it is enormious and to be frank did not outperform other engines in the turck class, we did the benchmarking and had the details, which is why we went this way for a production engine. Yes two plugs works on a Hemi, but why have two when this engine with a 4.22 bore has MBT at 23 degrees of spark?
@BC08
@BC08 Жыл бұрын
@@brianwolfe2993 Didn’t outperform what? A 6.6 L8T? A 6.4 Hemi? Are you saying the 6.2 as delivered by Ford in the Super Duty had reached the limitations of the design? The 6.2 fits into Mustangs, it didn’t take off because the block delivered couldn’t manage 4.22 bore like Godzilla with reasonable wall thickness and it didn’t have someone like you to fly it’s banner. Do you really think without your trail-blazing drumming up interest Godzilla would be doing anything close to what it is in the aftermarket right now? I don’t.
@CoyoteFTW

Don’t understand the problem with having another 7.3 good platform?? Supercharged making 1000hp completely stock. Ya the 6.2 was a great engine. But I’m glad Ford showing they can build best cam in block V8’s too.

@bairdmaceichthighearn2594
@bairdmaceichthighearn2594 Жыл бұрын
@@rickstorm4198 Beating LS from a technical aspect is easy, many engines do it now. The LS’s greatest strength is its ubiquitousness, internal combustion will be out of production before any engine family can manage to dethrone LS on that front. 7.3 Godzilla is basically a retread of LS. How can Godzilla beat LS when it is fundamentally the same, offers no notable architectural advantages and will see much more limited production? If Ford wanted to stomp LS that needed to follow a different path, and they already had the engine platform to do it (Boss) but let it rot on the vine.

@@bairdmaceichthighearn2594 what's the boss platform you're referring to?
@Farmaggedon
@Farmaggedon Жыл бұрын
@@bairdmaceichthighearn2594 And the LS is essentially a SBF with a mod motor bottom end. It even has the same firing order as the ford. Hell, Ford heads would literally bolt right on an LS block lol. The MSD Distributor for the LS in old NASCAR is not only the same part number for the Ford, the LS also has it in the front. There's far more similarities between a SBF and LS than anything Chevy ever did prior. I guess all I'm trying to say is the last thing Ford is doing is copying LS tech for their godzilla. They were the one's it came from in the 1st place :)
@bairdmaceichthighearn2594
@bairdmaceichthighearn2594 Жыл бұрын
@@Farmaggedon It really doesn’t matter if the LS has more superficial similarities with the SBF than the SBC. It’s totally irrelevant to my point. What the LS did have over the SBF was much better stock heads with much better valve angles, much better oiling systems, much stronger blocks and much stronger OE connecting rods. Late model LS/LT and Godzilla are much closer in the ways that actually matter from an end user perspective than LS is to SBF. I also said nothing about “copying” the LS. That wasn’t my implication, but fundamentally Godzilla is covering the exact same ground the large bore LSs did. Nothing new to see here. Godzilla just another large cube wedge small block with 8-9 degree valve angles and a 1.8 degree cant, woopty doo. I’m not here to to get into a brand bashing, wee-wee measuring or who did what first contest. OE-casting SBFs aren’t worth talking about today. Aftermarket casting SBFs are totally worth talking about but still more $$$$.

What does the material of the block have to do with it? First, an all-aluminum small-block with enough cylinder head and boost to match 1,600 hp would cost more than this engine by a lot. This is a stock block and heads combo. Second, the only reason a typical SBF would beat this engine is cylinder head flow. This engine uses factory head casts, which is part of the coolness of the build. If you've been following the channel, this engine is all about research and development, not trying to beat another engine. I'm sorry if you don't find it interesting to develop something new, but we do. Keep in mind all engine have gone through this type of work to get where they ended up.
