I happen to also own one of the Cammer engines used by Dyno Don in the 70s bought by my Father to drag race in his 67 Fairlane in Southern California. Very special motor indeed

That was beyond words to describe. Such an iconic car and it sounds like it would still lay down a respectable time too. Those cammers sounded and ran better than anything in their day.

The power to weight ratio on that Maverick has to be insane.

Absolutely awesome car. That 427 SOHC was a monster, but it was very misunderstood by so many people. However, with the right hands wrenching on it, it was damn near unbeatable.

Who needs a car stereo when the only music needed is coming from that engine bay? Damn that’s sweet!

What an amazing car, that spark advance/retard lever is really unique and old school. My buddy had a 73 Maverick, we junked the straight 6 and slid in a HO302 w/ a 5-speed from an old, wrecked fox body. That car was an absolute blast with just basic bolt on's for the time- Edelbrock intake manifold, Flowmaster 40 series mufflers, MSD Ignition ect... one time it was myself, my buddy and another guy, we went to the gas station and the other guy grabbed a 6 pack. My buddy asked him not to open any until we got back home. I was in the back mind you. He aptly said "No" and cracked one and proceeded to start chugging. My buddy slams the car into 1st and floors it through the parking lot, squealing tires and slides out into the road grabbing 2nd. The car slides off the road and we nearly hit a telephone pole. At the same time the guy in the passenger seat proceeded to dump his beer all down his face and shirt, while screaming WTF! My buddy was laughing so hard I thought he was going to need oxygen! The other guy didn't find it so humorous at all and left when we got back, and never came back over. Ah the good old days!😁

Dyno raced this car at my home track and I saw it run . In 1970, Dyno won the summernationals and was the only non mopar in the 16 car field !! In fact , for most of the year if there was a non mopar qualifier in the standard 16 car field at all the national events it was this car !!!!!! Don was a great tuner and driver and really never got the credit he deserves . Don's greatest achievement was his mustang 2 when he won the national championship. Thank you for preserving this piece of history for everyone to enjoy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a limited edition wall mounted likeness of this "Dyno Don" Maverick that I've had since I was a kid. Also, my mom bought a 1971 Maverick Grabber from her friend and NHRA racer, Ed Terry (who worked at the Ford dealership) out of Oakland, California. I was brought home from the Hospital in that Maverick in 1977 after being born. It became my first car at the age of 12 and now at 47, I still own it. 64K original miles.

For me Evan this mans Ford collection is the best ever. ! Him actually firing up these legendary Ford's , along with their originality, just takes it over the top. Great work Evan on keeping this important Ford history alive AND readily accessible. You are the man brother !!

I remember Dyno Don driving that car back at Dragway 42 in Ohio back in the 70s. Those were the best days of ProStock before they started handicapping the Hemis and Fords.

Such a beautiful piece of machinery and engineering! Unfortunately, I read where Don Prudhomme (shown at 2:24) couldn't keep the blocks together with nitromethane, which is why he had to go back to the chrysler hemi-rhoids. Ford could have resolved this with a little more effort, which would have been a big game-changer for chrysler. Guess Ford didn't think it was worth the $.

Doug's collection is insanely nice with this being the star! I built this scale model as a kid.

When i was a kid, it was my dream to have this engine with Ingles stacks in a Wimbledon white 67 XL fairlane with 389"s and a lenco. With plates and insurance 🤤

Amazing piece of history

When I was a 12 my old man gave me his old maverick as my first car. We didn’t have any special model mavericks to look up to, but Dyno Don and Roush with his Taxi were kind of it. I idolized those and modeled my car after them.

Thank you for these two episodes-especially this one!!! What a wonderful collection of special cars, and to have this one as the flagship too. I was a 14 year old FoMoCo fan when Dyno Don put this on the track. Lived in a small rural community, wasn't much coverage available for some motorsports back then, but I got my hands on everything I could about this Maverick. I even remember watching the Saturday afternoon presentations of edited races and recording this cammer runs on a small reel to reel tape machine to play back over and over through the home entertainment system at volume.

Man I remember those days even though I was just a kid and seeing that giant Mr. Gasket sticker on the door with the rest, that paint scheme, and that body stance with those tires is like having a flashback. Everybody on the street was putting big tires on the back of their hot-rods, (sporting Pioneer Super Tuner 8-tracks with 6x9s) and either jacking the asses up with spring shackles or Gabriel High-jackers or both. Traction bars were the icing on the cake. It wasn't just a different time, it was a F-ing different world ! LOL

The Holy Grail of Mavericks. I’ve always admired that car, someday I’d like to see it in person. I’d like to see what’s been done to it.

A bit of history there. This was one of the cars that got my interest in drag racing. The first ten years of pro stock were my favourites.

At Atco in Sept. 1970 Nicholson set the Pro Stock record at 9.60 We were waiting at the scale to get weighed because we set the record in our class, H/S. The Maverick got preference and was pushed on the scales ahead of the waiting other racers.

I love Ford Maverick content. It is the car at the top of my list for my next car project. I owned a 1972 Maverick Sprint back in the '90s and I didn't know what I had until a few years ago 😮

The car has definitely found the right "custodian" in Doug to keep it original for future generations to admire and enjoy, the fact he shows it and starts it up for others to enjoy is admirable.

It would be cool to see a cammer in a late model mustang or even one of these new f150s 4x4 just the sound is amazing. Sounds like its ready to kill you.

Was able to meet Don at his trailer when he was racing at Cordova, IL, can't remember the year, maybe the early 90's, but he was racing his 409 Bel Air. We were standing back, watching him working on the car when he turned around and saw us. He came over to say hi and asked if the boys would like to stand with him for a picture. Just a very nice guy who was so thoughtful of his fans. So nice he would take time away from his wrenching between rounds to do that.

The paint job is different than the color picture of Dyno Don’s Maverick on back cover of Drag Sport Illustrators pictorial of 1970 ProStock season. This car has white striping around orange side panel with white hood scoop while the pictured one from the book has gold background behind a red side panel with black hood scoop. The pictures in book of the initial ProStock season of 1970 seem to show this different paint scheme (the hood is a good telltale for paint scheme in b&w photos). Has to be same car but it must have been repainted at some point. …I did a little interweb searching after posting message above. The paint as seen now looks to be the 1971 paint scheme so car must have been repainted between 1970 and 1971 seasons. Doesn’t take anything away from car, just adds to the understanding of its history. What a gem.

Seeing and hearing Dons Maverick again brings back so many wonderful memories of the best era in Drag Racing history. I also noticed one of Phil Bonners Thunderbolt Fairlanes in the collection. My oldest brother Gene Wilson, was Phil’s engine builder and he also drove a Bonner Thunderbolt during the 1964 season. Great video Evan 🏁.

Back in the late 70's a hit in Birmingham, AL a guy named Larry Marshall raced a Maverick with a 300 6cyl and was quite successful. I remember him having a problem bending push rods. He ended up using 2 pushrods per valve with a "floating" lifter located in the head. We did all of his own machine work. Would love to see a story on him.

Ah, the sound of high compression engines. Maybe 14:1? Street raced in the mid 70's when high octane fuel was available. When Friday and Saturday nights were coming,I would go down in the afternoon put a half tank of Aviation fuel in, bump the timing to just a little ping, back off and go hunting. The Cammer was outlawed for use in the 66 Fairlane....it wasn't outlawed for the Galaxie. The Galaxie's extra weight negated the advantage ,so the Fairlane was run with the High Riser, then Tunnel Port engines.

I have Super 8 film of this car at Dallas drag strip in 1971 running a match race. Also there were 4 funny cars. Jungle Jim, Blue Max, Arnie the Farmer Beswick and one other that I can’t remember at the moment.

Dyno Don, my all time favorite drag racer. Saw him many times at York US 30. I have some autographed pictures of his cougar funny cars.

I recall the Ken Dondero with the Kendig. My friend and I were at Toronto International. Two things that I do remember. We joined Ken and his wife and sat on the lawn chairs, on top of the ramp truck. The big thing and intro at the drags were the Kending Carbs that were not installed on the car even though a lot of fans were asking what the carbs looked like.

When I was in high school, Don Nicholson was my favorite driver. Especially before then when I was in junior high because he had his Comment funny car. That was just so cool. Wish I could've met the man.

Been a die-hard Pontiac fan for the past 50 yrs, but this car is absolutely fantastic. The cammer in a Maverick, (not a muscrat), the V-gate, and surprized to see the Dana 60, and not a 9". It's history, and the preference to retain its originality, and not a concourse restoration. Well done, and thanks for sharing. Love this car, just the way it is.

That was great. He looks like a good caretaker of that historic car. He's done a good job of putting it back to correct. There are a couple small details that could still be changed. The valve cover breathers and plug wires and I will check my pix but I think the Dominators were the early ones with taller choke tubes. It also used Firestone Drag 500's. As far as I was told the car was brought back to California by Dondero and I saw it displayed in Bakersfield at the Hot Rod Reunion as it was when found.

That was awesome Evan what a cool car those were the real days of pro stock a real trans and shifter I know in 1973 herb was not happy about the Lenco cause the guys that knew how to drive a 4 speed always had the advantage over the guys that weren’t as good the Lenco was basically a glorified auto.

I was lucky enough to see this car at a 4 car match race Dyno Don, Bill Jenkins, Mike Fons, & Sox & Martin, at Lancaster NY.

Drivers had to tap the clutch pedal to shift, Dyno came up w/a pressure sensitive knob that cut the ignition for a micro second to allow clutchless shifting. I believe that was w/the Nash 5speed.
