A quarterly update of my entire stocks and shares Dividend Portfolio. I reveal the performance, what I've been buying and selling and also my investing plans for the rest of 2024. I’ve been investing spare money each month into large cap companies for 15 years and I make good use of a stocks and shares ISA to help protect my investments from both dividend and capital gains tax.

Always love your updates, very useful information! Last few years I've been focussing mostly on growth and tech stocks with a few dividend paying stocks. I'm happy with the size of that now, and those stocks alone could fund my retirement in a moderate to bullish future forecast. I currently earn around £2.5k a year in dividends and planning to switch investing focus now to build dividends to £10k a year (and beyond!). Some brilliant ideas for further research from your channel 😁

I love this video, very clear, very concise, very honest. My only problem with your portfolio imo is that the US is where the party is really at, why are you avoid the BIGGEST companies in the world? If you had invested in Apple, Microsoft etc back in 2009 you’d be a multimillionaire!
@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor 20 күн бұрын
In 2009 we were still in the financial crisis and many people thought the financial world was about to end. There was genuine fear in the air especially in the US. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but times were different back then. There was also very little choice in platforms back then and Barclays did not allow me to buy shares in overseas companies. This only changed a couple of years ago. ETFs were not mainstream back then either, so I grew accustomed to buying U.K. large caps. These days I invest a lot in the US through my S&P500 ETF, in fact over the last 2 years I’ve put in around 30k into US shares.

Glad to see you're holding your nerve on financials, CI. Very good value in the UK at the moment. When Barclay's book is trading at the same ratio to price as that of Close Brothers, you know sentiment has overpowered reason. Equally IG got initially hammered when they were swapping CEOs and the rates shot up, allowing for a very steady yield on cost and high total return if you took advantage. Renewables are a bit wobbly: the financing model in the industry has variable debt in it; output isn't guaranteed; and there's still the contingent liability of future infrastructure maintenance, repair and replacement. Sometimes it works out better and cheaper to just buy the bonds of these companies and projects direct, if you can. The expense ratio and transaction costs on the infrastructure trust entities is just too high for the value they offer, I'd say. You may be able to pick up a bargain after some consolidation in the industry, but anything close to 1% OCF will really compound against a long term holder. Plenty will be having continuation votes this year as well.

Holding trig and Ukw in the renewables sector higher interest rates have not helped the sector. I plan on holding for the foreseeable future as interest rates appear to be now stable with hopefully cuts over the next couple of years . Trig have sold a couple of assets to try and pay down the floating debt. Higher bond yields have probably also took money away from renewables as a safer option but lower interest rates you would imagine will reduce yields on bonds.

Nice! Thanks for the update. I was wondering does it make sense to add a few companies each month to the portfolio, say I have 10 companies and I want to add to all of then during the year while the prices are good, but I usually add to 1 company every month, does it make more sense to split the monthly investment and add a few companies at one go? Cheers

Not investment advice but I find that having more companies spread across different sectors reduces risk. When I first started I only had 3 companies and they were all in the banking sector. That was quite risky. my 4th company was Aviva which meant I was still 100% in the financial sector and not diversified. These days I'm comfortable with between 20-30 individual companies but also have ETFs which diversify even more.

Thanks so much. The plan was to invest between £500 to £1000 a month initially but as the years went by, wages went up. I think the average is 1.4K a month over the 15 year period. The actual amounts per year would vary so much. When the market was booming I put a lot less in and invested in premium bonds to build up an emergency fund and saved cash also. When the market crashed, I used the cash savings to buy up bargains when prices were cheap, so I’m not sure it would be that helpful and might cause some confusion as to why some years so much more went in compared to others. Most people tend to do the opposite of course. When the market is going up they put more in and when the market is crashing they don’t go near it or they sell stuff. Paying off the mortgage before starting this portfolio helped a great deal in freeing up more funds each month and allowing me to focus on this one pursuit. I’ll leave a video below on how I attacked the mortgage if you are interested.. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qZOJo7GZu9mrf58.html

If I started again today then ETFs would be the core of my holdings but I still like individual companies when I see bargains. Most of my recent gains have come from buying large companies when they are suffering a short term blip e.g. Shell and BP during the pandemic and Rolls Royce later on when it fell to around 70p.

@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor Ай бұрын
Many prefer just to go for the ETF only approach and there is nothing wrong with that. Personally I like both. Much of my gains in recent years have come from buying more large cap stocks suffering a short term crash like BP, Shell and RR during the pandemic. When I can't see any bargains I'll simply add to an ETF. This is just my personal choice however and picking individual stocks is not suitable for everyone of course. When I started in 2009 ETFs were not mainstream and I had not even heard about them until many years later. I therefore grew accustomed to buying individual stocks. I also couldn't buy individual overseas companies on my Barclays platform. Hope this helps.

Would you not save money in investing fees if you now moved your portfolio away from the Barclays smart investor platform? Their fees appear higher to me than some others, although direct comparison is not always easy. Keep up the posts, very informative and simple to follow and understand. The strategy for dividend investing rather than the search for growth is one worth investigating.
@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor Ай бұрын
Yes the fees are high but I've been with them for 15 years and no real issues. The customer service is good and they don't lend out your shares like some other platforms do. They also have many years of experience and have stood the test of time. Probably more likely to weather an economic disaster. The newer app based platforms are relatively untested. I'm also reluctant to transfer large sums of money to another platform in case anything goes wrong especially where ISAs are concerned. I've heard several stories of funds being locked for several months while the transfer takes place. I'm not saying the cheaper app based platforms are bad, they are a great option in my opinion for those starting out or with smaller portfolios. I have experimental portfolios with T212 and Freetrade. They are really easy to use but with very large sums of money then I just feel safer with a traditional broker like HL, AJ Bell, or Barclays.

There are 2 reasons I don’t do this. Firstly is a practical / time issue. My main portfolio is with Barclays, not on T212 and is constantly have to update it with weekly purchases / dividend reinvestments etc. Secondly I try not to encourage people to copy someone’s portfolio as what is appropriate for them is not always appropriate for others. I’m simply showing my own journey. Index investing is probably more sensible for the average person.

@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor Ай бұрын
Thanks, I'm afraid I don't have that information per company or per sector. I only record the amount of money transferred into the platform from my bank account. Over 15 years there have been several hundreds of buys and sells at different prices and movements from outside the ISA to inside the ISA. From a rough estimation I would say Aerospace / defence has been the best and Oil and Gas has also done extremely well. the banking sector not so well. Pharmaceuticals have generally done well. Tobacco has been terrible. Utilities have been fair / good. Consumer staples are fair / good. I don't have a particular loss limit but if I see a general long term downtrend then I may sell and put the money into something with slightly better prospects. I also trim down companies which grow too large and dominate the portfolio. History shows that those who rebalance from time to time gain 5% extra on average which might not seem much but over a lifetime can be huge. Hope this helps.

With all of that experience that you’ve had for 15 years. What would you have done differently to make this passive income with dividends? ETFs such as Vanguard (VUSA) or VUAG don’t even pay that much in dividends unlike these individual stocks. I’d really appreciate some guidance on what to invest for the next 20 years or so. Should I be solely focused on a singular ETF? Or individual stocks? I want to reach the same passive income that you’re getting in the next 15-20 years. How would I go about it? I honestly appreciate your video!
@TheCompoundingInvestor

If I was starting again and could resist the attraction of dividends then ETFs would make up the bulk of my investing I think. An All World tracker like VWRL would be an option and the S&P500. These would probably give the best total return. However I know many investors including myself find dividends very motivating so maybe an all world high dividend ETF like VHYL and of course the FTSE 100 (ISF) I might consider. Not investment advice of course just what my thoughts would be in my own situation
@-phantom-8207
@-phantom-8207 Ай бұрын
@@TheCompoundingInvestor Appreciate the response brother! Since FTSE is an ETF, that would mean I don’t need anymore diversification to my portfolio right? What would you think if I JUST focused on investing into FTSE and nothing else for years to come? Just wanna hear your thoughts on it, not asking for financial advice haha 😆 or would you choose some sort of different path? Like adding a few extra high dividend paying stocks to my portfolio, but not going too big into it? Choosing VHYL, or VUAG, or even VUSA over FTSE? Again, my goal is pretty much same as yours - to have a solid income from stocks monthly wise. Cheers!
@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor Ай бұрын
@-phantom-8207 As you know I quite like the FTSE100 and have around 90% invested in those companies. Those companies on average earn 80% of their revenue from overseas, so they are actually quite global. dividends are good also at between 3-4% however some would say that it’s a bit heavy in oil, banks and mining and not diversified enough. Some also say the total return (capital growth and dividends combined) is not as good as an all world index or the S&P500. It’s a difficult choice and depends how much you are motivated by the excitement of dividends with potentially lower capital growth or the fairly boring S&P500 / World ETFs with lower dividends but potentially higher overall return. Having said this, my guess is that whichever of these ETFs you choose or combinations of them you should still do very well if you invest as much as you can afford to over many decades

@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor Ай бұрын
I’ve held both wind and solar energy shares for several years. Wind has performed much better in that time. I’m not expecting a significant growth in share price as these are mainly income plays and they all pay decent dividends. Over the last 5 years Greencoat Wind has shown a slight increase in share price and good dividend so I’m happy with that. Bluefield solar on the other hand has lost 20% of its value and seems to be on a continual downward trend. I’ve therefore sold Bluefield and have transferred the funds over to Greencoat Wind which I think will do lot better going forward. Also in the news recently is government talk of expanding off shore wind farms. Greencoat is not far off being a FTSE100 company now. None of this is investment advice. Only my opinion however and I’ve been wrong many times before.

£255k in 2009 is £392k in todays money, i know you obviously didnt start with that lump sum and has accumulated over time, but are you concerned about inflation eating away at the real value gains of the portfolio? Retiring at 65 with 2 million in stocks sounds great, but for a young person like my self (25 y/o) who currently has £21k in shares, im scared that the value of that money come retirement will basically be stripped away and not last as long when it finally comes to spending it.

The fact that you have that much money at the age of 25 puts you ahead of your peers and most of the population. Inflation will have an impact on how far that money goes in the future for certain, but starting as young as you are with years of compounding dividends investments ahead of you will sort your future out! Time goes so quickly and it’s difficult to know how much to spend on things you enjoy verses saving for the future…. The government hopes to get inflation down to this magic 2% but if you can find savings or investments with 4 or 5% yield and keep topping up your investments you’ll do just fine

As the years have gone by I have become a more defensive investor yes. You can afford to take more risk in the market as you have time for the crashes to recover. Rebalancing the portfolio to reduce risk. Statistics show that occasionally rebalancing gains an extra 5% which might not seem a lot but over a lifetime is huge. I did the same with BP and Shell when I bought large amounts when they crashed during the pandemic. When they recovered they then dominated the portfolio so I took some profit and put the money into something which was not doing so well e.g. Rolls Royce. Secondly, selling some RR helped me use up my capital gains tax allowance as I bought it outside the ISA

No commission-free apps in those days, but to answer your question yes I would have done better. According to IG research over the last 20 years, the FTSE 100 has given a total return of 7.5% (dividends reinvested) and the US around 10% total return. The UK companies pay a lot more dividends than the US which you just don't see when looking at a share price chart. You have to subtract US withholding tax from that and also exchange rate fees.
