Fascinating process of conservation of the tablets. Thank you for giving us an easy to understand overview. What a precious resource.

That Fuji IR camera is worthy its weight in gold. My dept forensic lab was one of the first in the US to buy one. Million times better than the "good old darkroom days".

Just amazing that these letters have survived and we should appreciate the difficult process to conserve these records from Vindolanda.

Is there a website that has all the letters translated in English?

Is it true the word used for beer was "cervesa"? I heard this and found it fascinating but was never able to confirm it.

Yes, Latin borrowed words for local beverages. The two main ones for beer we know are cervesa (e.g. in the ink-written Vindolanda tablets, vessels from Vannes and Mainz and Marcellus of Bordeaux, possibly wheat based) and curmi (e.g. on a spindle whorl from Gaul and Marcellus of Bordeaux, possibly barley based).

I've found nothing about the content of Vandola tablets. What are they about.

Look at the Wikipedia article on the Vindolanda tablets, which provides not only an overview, but links to the texts with translations online.

With all due respect why do modern archeologists think that their audiences are just as 'excited as all get out' about what 'they' have done rather than what has been discovered. I waited for translations of interesting letters, military situation descriptions, family contacts elsewhere in the empire, legionairies writing to friends they may have served with else where...maybe asking about what their new situation is like or "how's ol' Centurion Basterdlis treating you", etc. etc. I went through, or rather tried to get through your series of videos but I have to say the information was mostly uninteresting...mmeanwhile a wealth of interesting knowledge was intellectually nearby but only slightly commented on.

wish you could have shown the process rather than simply talking about it.
